"What, really? Never?" Rebecca asks. "Oh, I guess you wouldn't have had stuff like fairs or visiting farms where you could befriend Ponyta and take them for gallops around the fields. I only met Selene on one of my excursions, but I was able to occasionally try riding ever since childhood."
"She probably could ride to Lilycove if she wanted," the girl says, rubbing her Pokémon's muzzle, "but she's not a super big fan of water. If there aren't obvious spaces to stop and rest, it stresses her out. It's understandable... I'm sure running through the air takes a lot of energy. Especially carrying people."

"Pokemon husbandry is only in its second generation back home. The world went feral for so long that domestication is something that has to be taught to interested parties and they have to be pretty strong on their own. There aren't really any for entertainment purposes. Could we ride and talk? Please?!"
Parish gave her a pleading expression. It was as though the idea never occurred to him before that you could be carried around by a Pokemon. Before Falling Star and the others, Oops was quite small.

"I mean, talking's a little hard while riding at fun speeds," Rebecca says, laughing, "but we could try. I'd probably just try and enjoy the experience, if that's okay with you? We'll probably just stick to the ground, though, in case of accidents. So you won't get the full experience."
"...are you afraid of heights, at all?"

"I don't know, never flown before! Ladders and stuff are fine. I'm scared of eating fruit seeds or breathing in dandelion puffs. And I guess of Tangela. And accidently drinking Oops. Some psychic Pokemon. Things that are unexplainedly sticky...". He trails off, face getting warm.
"Probably not heights though."

"Hmm? Why fruit seeds?" Rebecca asks, confused. "Some fruits have them inside them, and they won't hurt. I understand breathing in stuff, though. Coughing's never fun, especially fluffy stuff. Feels like it'll never get out."
"...and, yeah, I can see how psychic Pokémon can be really unsettling. They're often hard to read, and mysterious. I personally have no worries about them, but it's understandable why someone'd be unnerved by them."

"Well, I try dirt often enough on our excursions, what if I swallow a seed and it grows?". Parish asked in a hissing whisper. "There's a lot of water in the human body but I need mine.". There was no humor in the admission, and he huddled in on himself as though cold.

"That's not something that can happen," Rebecca reassures. "Seeds need fairly specific conditions and care in order to grow. It's hard enough to make them grow at the best of times, the stuff like stomach acids in our body make it impossible. They could never survive."

"...". Parish seems to consider this with some scrutiny. "Okay but what if there is a dimension where they can?" The boy mostly takes her at her word, but still seems a bit nervous about the concept of stuff inside of him.

"Food goes through the body really quickly," Rebecca says. "So even if there was something where it was able to grow in those conditions, it still wouldn't grow fast. And our body wouldn't have the nutrients it needs to grow - it's really, really different being there than it is in the soil or anything."
She lays a hand on his shoulder. "It's okay, Parish. It's not something that can happen."

His breathing began to slow with the contact, and the boy wiped at his eyes with a sleeve. "Thanks Becca... Stuff... In me has always been one of those things.". Parish swallowed a few times and brought himself back to ease.
"Did you ever hear about a woman named Julia? She was the stuff of nightmares. The reason Alpha 2 ended up where it was."

"Nah, it's okay. We can't see inside us or anything, so it's understandable to be worried about what's going on," Rebecca says. She twitches a bit at 'Becca', but doesn't say anything. "And... I don't really know anything about the history of your world. I remember some of the deep history lesson for the Corps talking about a Julia who was one of the ones who formulated the first portals, but that's all I recognize the name from."

"The Julia from Alpha Two was also a scientist, and she had few scruples. She was the origin of both our apocalypse and our salvation from it.". Parish began to tell a story he had heard recounted again and again. Now a fable about the dangers of being too quick to sacrifice in the name of progress.
"She created the Pokemon Human hybrids, far in our past. Hybridized Pokemon with others of their kind too. Caused a great deal of suffering. Among these creations was an amalgamation of a Class Zero lifeform, with dominion over the winds and sky, and a Class One, the highest tier of psychic waveform."
Parish wrung his hands slowly. "They rained stone, polluted with an other across Hoenn. It seeped into the land and warped the minds of the Pokemon. Got inside of them. Made them savage... Then the creature fled into the sky. Julia's body died, but her will to be the mother of an age persisted to my Gram's generation. She wanted the unification of everything, perfect beings to spread through an infinite cosmos. Could... Infect your body with just a scratch."
He sagged a little. "Gram lost a dear friend named Yellow Star, and almost lost her wife."

"That's... both sad, and terrifying," Rebecca says, listening intently. "I'm glad it didn't come to successfully pass. But it makes you wonder... what sort of places there might be out there where that sort of thing did come to pass." She taps a finger on her cheek. "I imagine that city you visited was probably the site of one such cataclysm. I wonder how many more worlds there didn't manage to eke out a victory against their trial of life or death..."
"Granted, that city might just be something like Sea Mauville," she muses. "Left alone in a cave, or out on the ocean, there as a relic, to be reclaimed by nature."
"I'm sorry..." she says, shaking out of being lost in thought. "That was insensitive of me. You were relating a tragedy, and here I am, mind wandering..."

"No that's okay, but what's a sea Mauville? Is that like Sootopolis?". Parish tilted his head to one side, now we'll free of the demons he had recounted. "Do all the people there live in a bubble town under the ocean?"

"A couple generations ago, it was a place in the ocean to mine for energy," Rebecca explains. "Unfortunately, it ran into issues. Corruption in management, technical difficulties, and just... a bunch of stuff. So it was abandoned."
"Pokémon started to reclaim it, so the process was sped up, and it was disassembled partially in ways to better allow the reclamation. Now it's a famed Pokémon habitat. No people live there, but tourists will go sightseeing."

"That sounds really nice, making houses for Pokemon out of stuff that isn't being used anymore.". His dreamy expression was back. "I definitely want to see that sometime. Can we go riding now Rebecca? I promise I will share something extra special with you later to make up for it."

"Unfortunately it's not really close to anywhere that has a portal," Rebecca says, thinking, as she helps him to mount Selene. "We could pop over to Slateport and then take a ferry over would be the best way, I think. Pacifidlog is closer, but doesn't have the infrastructure to connect to the network. Hazards of floating on water."
"It'll be something we can look into when we're in downtime, though. And, you don't have to do that! It's just a ride, silly!" With that, she clambers up in front of him. "Okay, hold on tight to her with your legs, and to me with your arms. She's steady, but it's your first time and I'd rather you not fall off. So... better safe than sorry. Let me know when you're comfy and ready to go."

"I would like that a lot.". Parish scoots up against Rebecca and settled his arms around her middle. The Pokemon reminded him of Oops in some ways. A little cool to the touch, making not a sound unless she wanted to. It didn't feel like the horse was breathing. He held with his legs and his hands.
It wasn't super comfortable, hips are boney, but being ridden probably wasn't either. One thing at a time. "Okay... I think I am settled right."

"Alright," Rebecca says, nodding, before patting Selene. "Let's go, girl. Off, into the night."
Selene speeds up, before running faster than Parish could ever hope to attain on his own. Beneath the stars and the moon, in the dark night sky, the horse rides back towards the city. It's not long before the lights of Mossdeep are more than a glimmer, as buildings tower into the sky.
All of a sudden, he realizes that the land ends up ahead rather abruptly. A sheer drop, but Selene isn't stopping. In fact, she seems to speed up, before bounding into an arc that seems to defy gravity, gliding through the air to land gracefully on the ground.
With the landing, she slows to a trot, and Parish recognizes that they're fairly close to the campus. In front of him, Rebecca's laughing.

Parish had certainly clung to Rebecca as his stomach plummeted to some point below his body, the hairs on the back of his neck standing on end. She had said they weren't flying and yet they had. He had been up, and it was something special. They had shared it together. Her laughter got him to laughing too, and he dismounted, finding his legs wobbly and uncertain.
"Seems like she has a mischievous streak like Oops does. Sorry if I squeezed too hard, I got a little nervous. That was such a strange feeling."
