"I uh...". Mable blushed at the direct question. She hadn't discussed all that much of her personal life prior to that moment. After a deep breath she nodded slowly to herself. "Awhile ago now, I started getting uncomfortable with the idea of eating meat, to have to subsist on other animals to survive. I became a vegetarian. Soups and stews, roast vegetables, salads, and artificial meats made using a bean curd called Tofu or mushrooms are most of my diet now. Stir fried vegetables with pad thai noodles were an old favorite."

"No, I know the diet isn't for everyone and it takes a really long time to get used to. Vegetables don't really satisfy the way meat does.". Mable admits. "Vegetarians will sometimes drink milk or eat eggs. The ones that don't are called vegans. It is a stricter diet still. A vegetarian option for your main course would be really inclusive."

"That's really well said. Dreams aren't unattainable.". Mable gave Thel's hand a squeeze. "No matter how obscure or difficult they might be.". The girl rose slowly and offered Thel a parting wave. "See you at signups in a few minutes."
Back in the main hall signage had been constructed for different groups. There was a great deal more milling about and grumbling when the clean and safe support jobs had filled up quickly. Groomers had been suggested and summarily filled. As had City Watch and Pokemon Care, patrol squads to help citizens in distress. Blessedly, Thel gets on the culinary team before the sheet fills completely.

There's a lot of people here, and Thel's glad to see that. It gives him hope. To go well with the Hope pouting on his belt. The next week's going to be very busy, but... he's actually looking forwards to it. Things can get better. He'll work towards that. And become a better person on the way.

Signups complete, teams are paired with faculty or staff to ensure they are fulfilling their duties and remain safe in doing so. Thel's 'Culinary Crusaders' as it was headered, were lead by a heavyset blonde woman with round glasses that hid a large portion of her face. Many of the students he recognized as the shyer first years that rarely spoke unless spoken to.
"Well ladies, my name is Jesse, and our project is two-fold today. We are going to be learning to cook in bulk, and to make preserves. The hall will be good enough for those well enough to make it here, but tomorrow we will need a delivery group as well to get food to those that don't dare brave the weather. Any questions?"

Jesse leads the girls into the kitchens to instruct them on preparing a quiche. As far as Thel can tell it is like a small pastry made heavily with egg, and containing strong tasting greens like spinach. Where his experience is entirely self taught, some of the processes don't make the most sense. What did whisking accomplish anyway? And the speed that you mixed the ingredients at changed the texture?
Jesse herself didn't seem like she really belonged at the school either. She was very approachable and not short on manners. Homey. That might have been the word for it. The girls each had their own work table, and aped the motions of mixing ingredients.

Thel does his best to take the teachings to heart, asking as many questions about the process itself as it seems like Jesse was okay with. He wants to learn more about all of this from someone who actually knows what they're doing, and clings onto the lessons. This is all so exciting!
