The Rules of Engagement for battle vs Gym Trainer Briar are as follows: Both trainers send out two Pokemon at a time, to a maximum of 4 total per side. The battle ends when one side runs out of Pokemon. You may surrender if you feel you cannot continue, but it's frowned upon. There are no penalties to the Challenge from this, only social woes.
