It had been a week since you had first come to the town, and you were restless from staying cooped up in your inn room all day. It was a nice, evening, the sun was setting on the evening before the festival, and it was hard to resist the allure of the pleasant town of Essica. The shops in the center square were quaint, with their simple stone construction, thatch roof, handpainted signs, nothing like the dramatic, detailed stonework, tall towers, and large archways that you were used to at home. And as you had wandered into the residential districts after the sun had set, the houses became more quaint, often only single-story, with straight white walls with little ornamentation. It was all so simple, so relaxing, that it had lulled your paranoia. It was the city’s fault, not yours, that you were in this situation. At least, that’s the excuse you told yourself.
While heading back towards the inn, you slipped into a cramped alleyway between two shops; it saved a good five minutes of time getting back to your inn, far safer to get there faster than to spend time lingering in the dark in a city with few streetlights, right? But of course, you were halfway through the alley, stuck between two steep walls, when the trouble found you. From in front of you, a large figure blocked off the end of the alleyway, a bulky, yellow pokemon at his side, crossing its arms menacingly. You didn’t really need to turn to look behind you to know the second man was there, cutting you off, but you checked anyways, and sure enough, a smaller, cloaked figure was there, a small, brown dog pokemon sniffing the air next to him.
They advanced on you, slowly, nonchalantly, knowing as much as you did that you were trapped. The smaller one from behind called out with a high, nasally voice, “Well Levin, this look like the guy?”
The larger one rolled his shoulders in preparation for a fight. “Sure is. Just don’t mess this one up like the last one, and we should be set.”
“Hey, the last one was just as much Iri’s fault as it was mine, and you know it! But anyways, what I’m curious is — What’s your name again, Samuel? How the hell did a guy like you get such a large bounty on your head?”

Shit shit shit shit! Sam's mind is running frantically as he assesses the situation. He'd been getting complacent, hadn't been paying enough attention, and apparently whoever was after him knew a lot more than he thought they did. Still, he, barely, managed to keep a straight face, feigning confusion and some worry. "I .... I don't know what you're talking about? Who's this Samuel? My name's Percy, I don't know anyo... I'm sorry, did you say bounty? I'm sure you've got the wrong person, I'm no one in particular, certainly not someone with a bounty on his head..." Sam's head darts nervously between the two man, keeping up the act while he's mentally assessing the situation, his hands twitching nervously, hiding him slowly reaching for Celia's Pokéball. Shouldn't have let her inside there in the first place. I've been getting complacent, I could've done with the extra pair of eyes.Lying and acting my ass off: Guile: fhYBJNKe3d6+2 Spending 1 AP

As Sam lied through his teeth, the two men exchanged a glance, before the smaller one spoke up. "Percy? Levin, you sure this is the right guy? The guild will kill us for sure if they know we stole-"
"Markos, shut up with that big mouth of yours!" The larger man, Levin, squinted at Sam, trying to make out facial features in the darkness of the alley, and then sighs. "Damnit, now I'm doubting myself, you just had to say something..." The man began digging about his pockets and pulled out a sheet of paper, squinting as he looked at it, leaning over to let his pokemon get a look as well, glancing between Sam and the sheet. It seemed they thought they had Sam pretty trapped, doing this without much concern.
And to be fair, as far as Sam could tell, they were mostly right. The walls on either side of the alley were made of smooth stone, with no windows. They might be possible to climb, but it certainly wouldn't be easy.
As for which of the two men were in charge? It was somewhat hard to tell, but they didn't seem to have a set hierarchy. The bigger one, Levin, seemed to have a bit more sense about him than Markos did, and Markos did seem to listen to him more often than not, but that was the closest it seemed to get to one of them being in charge.
Besides climbing up the walls, as for other means of escape, Sam could try and jump over one of men and sprint down the alley behind them. As the thought crossed Sam's mind, something else caught his eye. In the darkness, while Levin and his pokemon were distracted looking at their piece of paper, someone had snuck up behind them. It was hard to make out details in the darkness, but Sam could barely make out a tall woman with pale skin and long, black hair. There was a moment, and her gaze caught Sam's. She paused, then mimed bashing Levin in the head, then tilted her own head questioningly, looking at Sam for an answer.

Sam breathes an internal sigh of relief as the two presumably bounty hunters start bickering and doubting themselves, though he doesn't allow himself to relax himself just yet. All he'd done was buy himself a few moments to think, maybe get the drop on the two men, but it would only be a matter of time before they realised that he was, in fact, Samuel Evans...
It is as he's pondering his situation that he spots a woman appears behind the larger man, apparently intent on helping him out. Though a bit wary, he isn't one to say no to help when in need, and with this new ally the bounty hunters' number advantage is diminished greatly. His hand slowly finds Celia's Pokéball, resting on it and gripping it just enough that he could release her at a moments notice. He then gives the woman a subtle nod, wanting to give her the element of surprise before acting himself.

The woman nods back in response to Sam, readying herself. A moment later, there's a flash of light from a pokeball from behind Levin, and a moment later a large, two-handed sword swings out of the darkness towards Levin's Makuhita. With a surprisingly quick reaction, the pokemon whirls around and lifts up its arms, blocking the blow with a loud cry. Levin curses loudly, dropping the piece of paper he had and yelling out, "Markos, get him!"The smaller man jumps in surprise, seeing his friend attacked, but recovers quickly, pulling out a small dagger and bidding his pokemon forward. "Come on then, blind 'em!" The small dog yelps and darts forward, kicking up dirt from the ground towards Sam's face, but Sam barely manages to get his arm up in front of his eyes, protecting them. "How did you even miss that, ya bloody mutt!"On the other side of the battle, the woman's sword swings out again, crushing down on the Makuhita with a heavy blow, while from beside her, a small metal claw lashes out, scoring the Makuhita almost as deeply as the woman's claymore. Initiative: 17 - Rockruff 15 - Mystery Woman 12 - Pawniard 11 - Sam 10 - Celia 8 - Markos 5 - Levin 3 - Makuhita
Surprise "round": The woman uses struggle vs. Makuhita - Misses! Sam may release Celia during this precombat moment.

As the woman strikes down on Levin with a surprisingly large sword, Sam focuses his attention on the other side of the alley, quickly releasing Celia in midair. "Celia, luv, could you help me out here?" he calls out as the small owl Pokémon materialises. Celia, for her part, seems a bit flustered by the situation, taking in the sudden chaos with some surprise. "Focus please, Celia. Rain down some pain and stay out of reach," Sam calls at her, before hopping to the side a bit, staying on his toes and focusing dodging for the moment. Celia, emboldened by her trainer's words, hoots once, before unleashing a torrent of razor sharp leaves downwards and swooping upwards. Sam releases Celia in mid air during surprise round. Sam uses Splash! It does something! Sam jumps one square down. Sam gains +2 evasion until the end of his next turn. Sam uses Focused Training on Celia. +1 Accuracy and +2 to skills until the end of his next turn.

Markos and his Rockruff both try to shield themselves from the barrage of leaves, but with little effect, the Rockruff whimpering in pain as cuts appear across its body. Levin sees this and curses loudly, yelling out to Markos over his shoulder, "Just bag and run, before anyone else shows up!"The smaller man nods and runs over to Sam, swinging high and cutting low. The larger man runs over a moment later, disregarding the mysterious woman and her Pawniard, and regrets it a moment later, taking two large scours to the back, but he pushes on, in a flurry of activity just barely managing to wrap his arms around the slippery Sam and hold Sam in place. On the other side of Levin, his Makuhita turns towards the Pawniard, hitting it with an open palm, sending a shockwave through its body that causes it to slow down and lock up. The woman takes the opportunity to bear down on the sumo pokemon with another massive blow of her sword, causing it to stagger as its injuries begin to take a toll on it. With Sam now held in place, the Rockruff runs up next to its trainer, flames licking its jaws. It leaps up and sinks its flaming jaws into Sam's back, causing him to slump in Levin's arms, knocked out by the brutal blow. Levin looks to his partner, breathing heavily, but grinning. "Now we just have to get him out of here... somehow."However, behind the two men, an owl flapped in the air, with murderous intent... 17 - Rockruff 15 - Mystery Woman 12(6) - Pawniard 11(6)(KO) - Sam 10 - Celia 8 - Markos 5 - Levin 3 - Makuhita
Round 1 (cont.): Markos shifts 4 meters and ends next Sam. Markos uses Feint Attack vs. Sam, which cannot miss! 28 Physical Dark type damage!
Levin shifts 2 meters towards Sam, ending next to him. Levin Triggers two Attacks of Opportunity! Sam and Pawniard are now Flanked! Dia Struggles vs. Levin and hits! 25 Physical Normal type damage! Pawniard Struggles vs. Levin and, due to Brutal Training, crits! 41 Physical Normal type damage! Levin initiates a Grapple Maneuver vs. Samuel, and hits! In the contested roll, Sam rolled 14, spending an AP, while Levin rolled a 16, spending an AP as well! Sam is Grappled, and takes a tick of damage due to Bind!
Makuhita uses Force Palm vs. Pawniard and hits with an 18, triggered Force Palm's effect range! Pawniard is now Paralyzed, and takes 29 Physical Fighting type damage, before modifiers! Pawniard takes Massive Damage! (Pawniard's Initiative is now 6)
Round 2: Rockruff shifts 1 square next to Sam! Rockruff uses Fire Fang vs. Sam, and crits! Sam is Flinched and Burned, but it doesn't matter, because after taking 50 damage, he Faints!
Mystery Woman uses Struggle vs. Makuhita, and hits! Makuhita takes 27 damage before modifiers, and takes an Injury! Mystery Woman uses Flutter with her Shift action!

Sam grunts as he takes the blow from the smaller man, and struggles in the grip of Levin as the larger man grapples him. "Let bloody go of me, you piece o..." he doesn't get to finish his rant as the Rockruff bite strikes him, knocking him out cold. Celia, having now fully gained her bearings, hoots in concern as her trainer goes down, before locking in on her opponents in tiny avian fury, swooping down and unleashing a second wave of leafy pain. Sam's at -15 HP and has 3 Injuries
Celia flies down, is currently at ground level but still in the air. Celia uses Razor Leaf on Markos and the Rockruff! AC4: 7, 36 Physical Grass type damage

Celia's flurry of leaves batter the man and his dog, and the small pokemon cries out in pain, collapsing to the ground, body covered in a myriad of cuts. Markos curses loudly, not even taking the time to recall his pokemon. "Gotta push past the woman Levin, this bird is being a pain!"Markos then pushes forward, next to the woman's Pawniard, swinging at it with a swift two strikes, but the daggers mostly bounce off the pokemon's steel body, causing minimal damage. The Pawniard ignores the blows and manages to shake off the stiffness in its body, coordinating with its trainer to continue wailing on the Makuhita from both sides, getting another solid slice in that puts the Makuhita on its last legs. The Makuhita tries to strike back with another open-palmed strike, but it misses, too disoriented by the constant pummeling. Levin throws Sam over his shoulder and moves down the alley towards the woman and her pokemon, but he seems wary of taking any more blows trying to barrel past like he did previously, waiting for Markos and his Makuhita to clear the way. Unfortunately, the Makuhita doesn't get a chance to try, as the woman brings her sword down in a final overhead swing, knocking the Makuhita out of the fight, crumpled on the ground. She then silently turns to look at Markos and Levin, staying in her lightfooted combat stance. 17(KO) - Rockruff 15 - Mystery Woman 10 - Celia 8 - Markos 12(6) - Pawniard 11(6)(KO) - Sam 5 - Levin 3 - Makuhita
Round 2 (cont.): Rockruff Faints from Celia's Razor Leaf, taking Massive Damage and 3 injuries! Markos takes Massive Damage and 2 Injuries!
Markos shifts forwards two squares, and uses Double Strike vs. Pawniard! Hit with rolls of 19 and 7, 27 Physical Normal type damage!
Pawniard makes a save vs. Paralysis, succeeding with a roll of 18! Pawniard uses Scratch vs. Makuhita, crit on 19+! Hit with a roll of 7, 27 Physical Normal type damage!
Levin uses his turn toss Sam over his shoulder, then shifts 2 squares to the left!
Makuhita uses Force Palm vs. Pawniard, crit on 19+! Miss with a roll of 2!
Round 3: Mystery Woman uses Wear Down vs. Makuhita, lowering Defense by 1 stage on an Even Numbered Roll! Hit with a roll of 19, 28 Physical Normal type damage! Makuhita Faints, taking 1 Injury! Mystery Woman uses a swift action to Shift 1 square north due to Nimble Steps, than uses Flutter!
Celia's turn!

Celia gives a single hoot of quiet contempt as the Rockruff falls to her barrage, before focusing her attention to the men that had hurt her trainer, eyes narrowing slightly as she lines up a shot on the larger man trying to carry Sam with him. Happy that the man's path is interrupted by the large woman who seemed to be helping them, Celia shoots off a leafy dart, hitting the man square in the back, well away from her trainer's limp body. Celia moves slightly closer and flies up a bit Celia uses Leafage on Levin. AC2:17, 27 Physical Grass Type Damage

Celia's leaves pelt Levin, her eagle (owl) eye managing to spare Sam any of the damage, and he stumbles forward, looking to be on his last legs. Markos is barely standing either, and as he tries to make one last desperate swing at the Pawniard, the Pawniard bursts forwards, dark energy forming around its claw as it sucker punches Markos in the stomach, knocking him out. Levin, seeing his friend go down, holds his hands up defensively, letting Sam drop to the ground. "Wait wait wai-" The woman isn't having any of it though, cutting him off with another two-handed swing of her sword, the blow sending the large man flying into the wall, unconscious. The woman then sighs and surveys the scene for a moment, dragging Levin off of Sam and checking his vital signs. As she moves to pick Sam up, Celia begins to hoot protectively, and the woman quietly speaks to her with a steely voice. "Relax, I'm just going to take him somewhere to heal, you can come along..."
Sam's eyes slowly begin to flicker open, trying to adjust as his body sends him a myriad of senses all at once. The most prominent one being his back, on fire with pain. As his senses slowly adjust, he can just barely make out that he is lying on a bed, staring up the ceiling of a mostly dark room, barely illuminated by a light somewhere off to his left. Before he can make out much else, there's a flapping of wings and excited bird noises, and Celia lands on his chest, staring down at him with concern. Combat is over! The mysterious woman and Sam get 34 experience each, and Sam's is given to Celia cause she's a good girl.
Sam wakes up 1.5 hours after having his bandage applied, his natural healing rate being doubled to 1/8th per half hour for that duration, and for the next 4.5 hours of rest assuming he keeps it on. If my math is right, he should be at 6 HP currently.

Pain. Pain is what fills Sam's world for a few moments as he awakes from his fitful slumber. "Hnnng..." He shifts a bit, wondering why he's hurting this badly. Then the memories come flooding back in. "Bloody dogs..." he mutters, frustrated with the situation, anger temporarily overwriting his worries and paranoia. Taking a steadying breath, he opens his eyes... only to find himself in an unfamiliar location, lying down. As slight panic begins to rise, he hears some familiar noises, as Celia lands on his chest, agitating his wounds slightly. Still, Sam is thankful for her presence, and his fears subside considerably. He gingerly moves to pet the Rowlet, smiling weakly and grimacing as the pain hits once more. "Heya Celia. Did you save my ass again? Should've left you out in the first place, you'd have spotted those bozos from a mile away, wouldn't you have?" he softly talks to her, singing her praises for a few minutes, trying to steady his nerves.
Several rounds of compliments later, Celia by now glowing with pride, Sam finally takes a moment to look around the room, gingerly sitting in an upright position as his eyes scan the dimly lit room, trying to figure out where he is, and if he can spot his bag nearby while he's at it.

Looking around the room, it isn't much. The wooden walls are aged and worn, the bed he's currently on is sagging with age, and the entire place has a musty smell. The floor looks to have a few places where it has given way, only to be patched somewhat haphazardly. Next to the bed is a boarded up window with tattered curtains, ethereal tendrils drifting as a slight breeze flows through the cracks in the boards. The only light in the room comes from a single fire crystal, haphazardly placed in a small dish on an old desk shoved into a corner. The desk looks as damaged as the rest of the room, missing a few drawers, one of the legs completely replaced with a stick, shoddily lashed onto it. Sitting in a chair at the desk which has been turned around to face the bed is the woman who helped Sam earlier, her elbow propped against the desk and her head resting in her hand. Her eyes are closed and her breathing is shallow, but Sam gets the feeling that she isn't really asleep, only resting. It only takes Sam a few minutes to find his bag, sitting on the floor directly next to the bed. On top of it sits a piece of paper, creased and wrinkled from being folded and unfolded to fit into a pocket a few too many times. Even still, it's difficult to mistake the face drawn on it as any but Sam's own, the likeness near perfect, disturbingly so. Below the image, it reads: "SAMUEL EVANS, 5,000,000 CERA ALIVE, 10,000 DEAD". In the bottom right corner of the page is a small symbol, a small dash inside a downward facing triangle that is inlaid into a circle. Cera is now going to be the in-universe name for Pyen. Cera is the currency of Steria, and has been commonly adopted as the trade currency throughout the rest of the Shattered World, although individual nations oftentimes have their own currencies.

As Sam takes in the room, he finds it hard not to think back on grimmer days, the shabby place not too dissimilar from the first flat his sister and he had lived in after their father had died. Forcing his mind away from those dark memories, as well as the surge of worry for his sister, he continues scanning the room, taking a few moments to observe the woman who had helped him earlier and who had, presumably, brought him here and patched him up. He had to wonder at her motivations, but for now... he would merely be grateful for her help. Not that he could do much more with how much his back was burning. Still, can't hurt to observe, and try and get a vague idea what she is like. Once finished with this, he continues looking around the room, quickly finding his bag besides the bed, poster laid out on top. Grabbing the piece of paper and smoothing it out, he curses. "Bloody hell..." That's a pretty steep price... at least I'm worth a lot more alive than dead. Gives me some wiggle room... I hope. He scans the poster, hoping to find any clues, quickly finding the symbol at the bottom. He takes it in, trying to remember if he had seen something like it before. Intuition to get a feel of the woman's personality: dFVEA6tW3d6 Perception to take in her appearance, physicality, etc: 3d6 General Education to recognise the symbol: 3d6+2 Spending 1 AP 3d6·3d6·3d6+2

Sam puts his keen observational skills to use, trying to learn as much about his potential ally as he can. She's tall for a woman, perhaps a little taller than himself, skinny, with pale skin, black hair that fades to white at the end, dark circles under her eyes. She isn't gaunt, but she's obviously not living particularly healthy, at the moment. What weight she does have is muscle, not particularly bulky, but well conditioned, used to physical activity. There are a number of scars along her bare arms, and this paired with the large bastard sword leaning up against the wall next to her begins to give Samuel a decent picture of what she's like. She obviously hasn't had an easy life, and is conditioned to fight, which was fairly obvious from what little he saw of her in the earlier battle. The amount of scars she has on her arms compared to the fact that she looks barely older than Sam suggests that not all of her scars were acquired in a fight. Even in how she rests, she's obviously ready to leap into action at a moment's notice. From the quality of the bandages on his wounds... he can tell she isn't much of one for healing, doing just enough to get the job done. With her rough, weather-worn clothing, and the fact that Essica has seemed mostly a peaceful town... she was most likely an outsider, probably squatting in an abandoned building in town for the time-being. She certainly didn't seem to care about money, because if she did, Sam doubted he would have woken up in such a free state. As for the symbol on the poster, it's not something he recognizes, but as he takes a moment to search his memory, there's a small spark. There were two competing bounty hunter guilds back in Viter, and whenever Sam has idly glanced at a poster, there was always the symbol of one of the two guilds in the same position in the bottom right corner. "You normally stare at pictures of your own face for minutes on end?" The woman's breathy, alto voice startles Sam out of his thoughts, and Sam suddenly finds his eyes meeting a steely, dark-blue gaze. The woman locks eyes with him for a few moments, then, seemingly satisfied, sits up in her chair, yawning and stretching her arms.

Sam looks up from the poster, a wry grin on his face, trying to mask his worry and internal turmoil. "Well, it isn't too often you see your face paired with this steep a price. Besides, wasn't too interested in my own mug. More in the folks who set the price. Not too much luck there though..." he trails off for a moment, eyes darting back to the poster, before locking back on to the woman, a more sincere smile on his face now.
"Either way, I owe you my thanks. You saved my skin out there when you really didn't have to, and you've helped out more than just myself by doing so. I... I... I thank you from the bottom of my heart, and if there's anything you need help with, I will help you as much as I can."

The woman just stares at Sam as he thanks her, expression unchanging. "Careful with making a promise like that, it's dangerous. I just helped you because seeing someone mugged in a back alley seems against... the spirit of this town."
She shrugs and sits up in the chair, finally deciding to wake up, at least for a bit. "My name is Gladia, but I'm not too picky on what you call me. And as for your hunter problem, I wasn't able to deal with them because I had to drag you back here, so they may know where you're staying. Did you leave anything?"

Sam takes a calming breath and shifts slightly to sit properly on the bed, grunting a bit as the pain in his side hits him. "Sorry, got a bit too emotional there, pain tends to do that..." His smile turns wry again. "I've got plenty of experience with that, believe me."
"Pleasure to meet you, Gladia. My name's Sam, though I suppose you already figured that one out," - He holds up the poster - "and this little sniper here is Celia," he gestures to Celia, who had moved over to his shoulder, the Rowlet hooting a few times in greeting. "As for my stuff, I've got everything in here" - he pats the side of his bag - "I tend to travel light, and well... I prefer to stay mobile, for reasons you can probably guess. I've no bill left open or anything, so no real need to go back there, assuming I can find somewhere to sleep."
Sam stays quiet for a few moments, considering his options, a myriad of questions running through his head, with no real good way of bringing any of them up. In the end, he decides to leave it be for right now.

Gladia nods stiffly as he introduces himself, then slumps back down in her chair, closing her eyes again. "Well, you're in a bed right now, so it seems as good of a place to sleep as any, hmm? I don't think they'll try anything during the festival tomorrow, but if you want muscle..." She shrugs. "I got nothing better to do."
