I know why you’re here, my child. Only those who are truly desperate in their search for answers make it this far, to Essica, to our Festival of Fortunes. Surely you’ve heard the tales of the Augur, the one who can commune with Celebi, the one who sees everything, knows everything. But just because you have a question does not mean that you deserve to know the answers that you desire. Why are you here, truly? What are you here to discover, to know? How hollow do you feel, and how much are you willing to give to feel whole, to feel real, for the first time in your life? Well, I suppose we’ll find out. Come, ask me your question, and we will see if you are deserving of your fate.
Welcome, to the Shattered World. You are lost, a seeker, one who has traveled from the far reaches of the sky, to an isolated, insignificant island for the Festival of Fortunes, in hopes that you will earn the chance to meet the Augur of Essica. Whether from Aggria, Steria, the Natashi, or one of the countless smaller islands in between, you have come here with a question, a question that you have found no answers to, answers you cannot live without. What is your question, and is it worthy of an answer?
The World in Brief
The Shattered World is, as the name suggests, a world that in the distant past suffered a calamity which shattered the planet, leaving behind a collection of sky islands floating above an endless void. However, this calamity is in the distant past, mere myths and legends. Technology in the Shattered World is based on the 17 different types of elemental crystals, which can be tapped into to produce varying effects. Perhaps the most important type of crystals are the Air crystals, which allow for both the construction of airships and the fashioning of feather charms, which can raise a person falling into the abyss back up to solid ground.
Currently, there are three major powers in the skies: the Merchant Coalition of Steria, the Aggrian Empire, and the Natashi Tribes.
Steria is a loosely defined alliance of over 100+ city-states and small kingdoms, with a decentralized yet highly complex and legalistic central congress that features representatives from the 30 most influential of the Sterian member states. Sterian member-states control the majority of air crystal mining and manufacturing, leading to commerce being the focus of their government and global influence.
Aggria is an authoritarian, militaristic theocracy, ruled by the Church of the Swordsmen, their war gods. They are a new player on the global stage, only rising to prominence in the past 70 years, when a small nation suddenly launched a series of military campaigns, claiming the vast stretch of territory that became the Aggrian Empire. Aggrian conquests have slowed in recent years, but they haven’t stopped, the Empire slowly annexing smaller nations on their borders through promises of protection, threats of force, or quick military action.
The Natashi are confederation of tribes that live on the far reaches of the known skies, in harsh environments of ice and fire. Mainly isolationist, the Natashi value perseverance and fortitude above all else, worshipping the Regis in their steadfast ways. The Natashi are ruled by the Aspect of Gigas, a legendary figure who is said to have inherited the power of Gigas and united the Natashi over 300 years ago. When tested, the Natashi have proven to be brutally powerful, destroying kingdoms who have encroached upon their territories in mere days using their powerful ice-crystal based weaponry, but these occurrences are rare, the Natashi seemingly more than happy to be left to themselves on the fringes of the world.
Essica, the city the game will start in, is not a member of any of the major powers, and independent cities and nations like Essica are the norm, not the exception. The skies are vast, and the major powers hold influence on perhaps a third of all of the skies in total; there is room for nations of all sorts in the rest of the skies, and you are free to make up your own.
The gods in the Shattered World have a very real, very active presence. Each and every person in the Shattered World is claimed by a god at some point in early adulthood, and their Godmarks grant them various enhancements and abilities. Monotheism is incredibly rare in the skies, although most revere the god that has Marked them a bit higher than the other gods. Depending on the culture in various places in the world, some people are Dedicated to a god at a young age, their lives directed towards a specific path through some sort of ceremony asking the god of choice to pay special attention to the dedicated in hopes that they will eventually develop the Godmark of the corresponding god. However, this is far from guaranteed, as the gods will choose who they please, and it is not uncommon for the Dedicated’s life to be turned upside-down as they discover they are favored by a god far different than the one they expected.
The Basics
Hey there! My name is Hay, and welcome to the recruitment for Echoes, which will hopefully be the first of many games set in the Shattered World. This game will be using DataNinja’s PTU 1.05.5 compilation, which can be found here. This game will be using the Trainer revision, so make sure you’re using the Fancy Sheet Version Nagandel. For this game, joining and using the Shattered World Discord is required. If you absolutely cannot use discord for some reason or another, shoot me a message and we can talk about it.
The application window will last from the time of this post until 3 p.m. PST on Sunday, April 21.
I’m looking for 3-5 players for this game, and have already given a player slot to a friend who has helped me in developing this setting from the very beginning. As such, I will be accepting 2-4 applicants, and I am looking for people who are willing to post frequently and consistently. I hope to post back and forth multiple times a day, but that’s a steep expectation, so I’m looking for a post from every player at least every 2 days, with direct communication when life gets in the way of that.
Final Note: This is the first time I’m running the setting and the first real time I’m running PTU, so consider everything to be in the Alpha phase. I will probably tweak lore and mechanics, not everything is complete, and if you have a question about something, please ask. I’ve found that it’s hard for me to work on setting without having direct motivator, hence why I’ve been working on this setting for years with far less progress than I’d like, hence why I’m starting the game up.
Rule Tweaks and Character Creation Rules
Tweaks:
-There will be rules that allow certain water type pokemon to gain a levitate speed, I'm still ironing out the details. Fish pokemon feel awkward to play on land in general, and I need flying fish for my sky oceans as well.
-Pokemon with the Mixed Power PokeEdge must keep their Attack and Special Attack within 5 points of each other.
-For the Artificer Research Field and any related edges… Just talk to me. Artificing works different in the Shattered World, as colored shards are replaced by elemental gems, and as such I need to work on making my own version of the subclass, but it hasn’t been a top priority for me.
-If you’re interested in using the Gadgeteer Class, talk to me. I’m not certain on how I want to deal with this class in my setting yet.
Bans:
-The Basic Balls Edge and Poke Ball Craft Feature. Normal pokeballs don’t exist, only apricorn balls.
-The Pokepsychologist Edge.
-The Pokemaniac Feature
-All content from The Blessed and the Damned and Do Porygon Dream of Mareep is banned, all other books are allowed.
Character Creation Rules and Fluff
Your character will start at Level 1, with a single underdog, multi-stage Pokemon starting at level 15. The Pokemon may start with a single Egg move (or Tutor move, if the mon in question does not naturally have an Egg list), which will be put on the Inheritance list if it does not meet tutor restrictions. Variable DB moves count as their highest possible DB for tutor restrictions. No High Technology Pokemon i.e. Porygon. If you have a question on if a starter counts as “High Technology”, talk to me, if you want a pseudo-legendary starter, talk to me. If you have any other questions about levels and bans, talk to me. You get the point, talk to me, and if I see something on a sheet that makes me go “ehhhhh shoot I should have thought about restricting that,” I’ll talk to you.
Characters start with 3 Basic Balls, 3 Enriched Waters, 1 Feather Charm (An item that when worn, can save the wearer once when they fall off the edge of an island into the abyss), and ₽1500 to be spent before game start. Weapon prices follow the “Commonplace” guidelines in the book. TMs are not allowed. Use common sense, if something seems too technologically advanced, don’t buy it and/or ask about it.
If it wasn’t clear from the hook at the start, your character should be traveling to Essica in search of something, with a burning question. Perhaps the question is well defined: “Why did my childhood friend vanish from my village?” “Who is chasing me?” “Where can I find the relic I’ve been accused of stealing?” Perhaps the question isn’t so well defined: “Why do I feel so empty?” “How can I become a god?” “Is there anything beyond this reality?” “What is the purpose of my life?” Either way, your character has come to Essica searching for something that they haven’t been able to find anywhere else. As such, mention somewhere in your application what your character is searching for.
Your character should be between the ages of 17 to 24, and Unmarked by any of the gods. If your character has been Dedicated to any of the gods, make sure to mention it in your backstory, but in keep in mind it’s a rarity, not the norm. If you want to make a character younger or older than the guidelines, talk to me.
Finally, I’m planning on a narrative, character focused game, so I’d like to see a roleplay sample from you. Give me a sample of how you would write your character in a post; set a scene and write it like you were in a game. People tend to write from a different perspective in character backstories, and that’s fine, just also give me a taste of how your writing style will be in game, and include it somewhere in your app.

For more lore documents, please refer to the Reference Thread. I will be working on fleshing out and adding lore documents here during the application process as I find time to work on them. Reading these is not required, but you might find some interesting ideas there.
