It's a nice day, but the sun doesn't like to reach into the back alleys of Godspring. The display side of the town may be nice, but the (admittedly small, compared to other places you've seen) seedier side is not a very pleasant place to be. But, alas, it was here that you were following a possible lead to someone who might have known your father. Sadly...it all came to naught. The person who you were looking for had been dead for over a decade. So, it is with that that you had to begin making your way back to the Pokémon Center, where they thankfully accommodate travelers for free. It's not much... but at least it's something.
But, as you head back, from down an alleyway, you hear a female voice cry, "Oi! You lugs give that back! That belongs to my family! You dig? Hey!

Braxton pulled his coat tighter around his shoulders as he continued walking. He didn't need it for the warmth, not that this ragged coat would provide any. His mother gave him this coat before he left, saying it was his fathers' from a million years ago. It was a shame that nothing came of this lead. Braxton was beginning to worry that there might not be anything for him in this town. He didn't even know if his father had made it this far north before disappearing. Maybe in a few weeks, if nothing panned out, he would start scouring south through all the small towns for talks of a task force coming through 20 years ago. They wouldn't have hit the big cities, and that kind of news always makes headlines. Even if it was so long ago, be in the right place at the right time and you might find somebody who heard about them. He just needed a lead. "Right Ruairidh, what would you say to heading back and doing a bit of training before we start looking for another lead?"
The Riolu looked up to him and gave a happy growl. Ruairidh always seemed happy, no matter what they were planning to do. Sometimes he seemed like such a counterpoint to Braxton, but it was nice. Braxton had already began thinking of lunch training routines for the afternoon when he heard the woman's screams. As soon as he registered the screams, Braxton and Riolu started sprinting towards the alley. "Hey! What the hell do you think you're doing?" Braxton shouted into the alley hoping to stop whoever was causing the screams if only for a moment. Riolu was much faster than Braxton, and was already well into the alley when Braxton finally got to the entrance and looked inside. Perception check? If so...

As you rush down the alleyway, you come face to face with a half dozen thugs - ranging from late teens to mid twenties, with clothes that look a lot better than yours - in a semicircle around a blue-haired woman. By her style of dress, you can tell that she's either a trendsetter, or not from around here. Probably the latter. "Oh, lookie here," says the man in front of the woman, after a brief look of surprise. "A knight in shinin' armour comin' to rescue the princess. Well, lemme just say, fella, that you should think about turnin' around and fergettin' whatcha saw here." The Pancham at his side leers menacingly at Ruairidh, while the man deftly holds a sharp knife in one hand. You notice that along his arm he seems to have an ornate tattoo of an Arbok. Something seems to be glittering in his other hand, but he slips it into his pocket. "But, we wuz done heres anyway. No need to risk more of youse showin' up." He begins backing, along with the rest of his people, towards the other end of the alleyway. "Youse don' follow us, an' nobody get's hurt, 'kay? I'm feelin' generoose. So ya can keep the lady."
"You lousy jerks! What gives you the right-ahead to just go yoinking everyone's jangle like that?" She certainly has an...odd...way of speaking.
"Shut'cher yap, sunshine."
It only looks like they've got the one Pokémon between them, but a quick glance shows that all of them have blades of some sort.

Six. Six. Six. Braxton's eyes darted between his targets. This was going to be interesting, and there was no way Ruairidh could do it alone. He was going to have to think fast, and move faster. "Alright Ruairidh, you know what to do. Low stance, keep moving, and be prepared to roll with a hit." Brace for impact Ruairidh sprinted to the female thug closest to his left flank and began tracing intricate stances as it moved through a number of martial techniques, hardening his resolve. Riolu used Swords Dance- gains 5 DR from Brace for Impact "Right then. Sounds fair. You return what you have stolen, and I won't follow you. Nobody gets hurt. I'd hate to see Ruairidh here have to tire himself out before our training today. Braxton followed suit and ran to the closer thug: the one on his right. He was wary of the knife, and prepared himself for what would likely be an unpleasant encounter. However, it was a necessary sacrifice, so as to relieve pressure from Ruairidh. This would not be an easy fight. He began trying to anticipate the moves of the thugs, they only had one Pokemon, like him, and he had faced worse odds in the past. Let's just hope this one doesn't end like last time. Braxton looked into the eyes of the thug, "Your move. Give up this petty theft, or forever wish you had." I use italics for thoughts. Please let me know if that's a problem.
See dice for intimidation check, if it is relevant here.

"Lis'n, bubsy," the one that looks like the head thug says, the one right near their victim, "we ain't givin' this up. So looks like you've chosen tha' hard way. Again, don' worry. I said I'm feelin' generoose. We'll letcha keep all of yer limbs and organs." There comes some laughter from the rest of the thugs. "Cindy, John," he calls, as he steps towards you, "stop 'er from yappin, an' make sure she don' escape 'till we teach this fella a less'n." The two named step towards the blue-haired woman, and she glares at them, but doesn't say anything. They menacingly approach, and don't hesitate before slashing with their weapons. Clearly they know how to use them, and the chief also grabs a handful of powder from his pocket and throws it into Braxton's face, causing his eyes to water ferociously, clouding his vision. "This ain'tcher turf, Mister Hero. Yer on Snakebite turf. And if youse wants ta live, you'd better except that.""Er, that's accept, boss.""Shaddup, Jaclyn. So, we're nice guys. We don' wanna hafta kill ya. Bribes are heck around here. Butcha attacked us foist. So, we'll letcha go. We already got enuff to set us up fer a while. So, whatcha say, bubsy?"
Braxton takes 40 damage, and an injury. Ouch. Also, he gets Blinded for one round from the Blind Dirty Trick Maneuver. Ruairidh... also takes 40 damage. And an injury. Also ouch. This fight...doesn't seem to be going well.

Braxton felt the blades sink into his flesh and gritted his teeth. That would leave a mark. Out of the corner of his eye, Braxton saw Ruairidh, who was also taking a beating, edge towards him slowly. Momentarily distracted, Braxton suddenly felt a burning in his eyes, and he suddenly could no longer see. He heard a menacing voice coming from the direction of the man who he had seen pocket the mysterious item. Blinking furiously, Braxton swung wildly in an attempt to use a forearm strike against the brute. Unfortunately, the blur for which he was aiming for was not the best target, and he missed his mark, barely grazing the vagrant. Gritting his teeth, Braxton spat out, "I don't give a damn who you are, and whose 'turf' you think this is. Unless you have a very good reason for robbing this woman, I suggest you stop what you are doing.
Ma'am," Braxton called to the woman, "If this item means as much to you as it seems to, I would appreciate any assistance you are able to offer. If it isn't worth it, run now, and I will try to hold them off." Ruairidh, facing the two thugs who had attacked him, threw himself against the pokemon to his right and pivoted around it, ensuring that if the thugs tried to strike at him while he was moving, they would hit their own pokemon instead. disengage Facing the man who blinded Braxton, Ruairidh's palm glowed with a soft energy, and with a growl, he struck out at the vagrant's flank, aiming for the kidney. Hearing this, Braxton raised his pokeball and attempted to retrieve Ruairidh. "I'll not have you put your life on the line for me Ruairidh. Blaire may be able to help us, but you have done enough." Riolu Force Palm, AC 15, 35 damage Braxton misses horribly

You hear a loud sound of pain from one thug as Ruai's attack strikes true, before hearing yips of pain from that direction. The last thing you remember before the darkness comes it what feels like the hilt of a knife to the side of the head. Coming to, the first thing you can see is the face of the woman who was robbed, over you. You tangentally realize that you're still in the alleyway, but it's later in the day, and your wounds are bandaged. "Oh, that's a right good thing going on there there, pal. I was fearing that you'd have to be sleeping in the ground a mite earlier than you'd intended, but I'm chuffed to say that you should be dandy. Might still be a good choice to see a Pokémon Center, though. I'm sorry that you're still in this forsaken place, but I didn't want to move you. Might have caused a bit of internal kerfuffle. Anyhoo, thanks for coming to my rescue. Even if it didn't exactly... y'know, get me rescued. Now, how's that noggin feeling?"If you look further around, you can see that, beside the crouching woman, Ruairidh is also bandaged, and is similarly bandaged. Well...the RNG was majorly against you.
Anyways, long story short... Braxton and Ruairidh both are at 1/8 of their HP, and have 2 injuries. Not taking damage for another 5 hours will remove an injury (plus, Brax can heal up to 3 from himself by draining an AP.)

Braxton smiled at Ruairidh, "Perhaps we should work more on group combat eh?" He chuckled and reached up to scrape some of the last bits of grit that were still left in his eyes.
Ruairidh hobbled over to him and sat down next to him, slouching against him and made a guttural growl. It was definitely laborious, but even through this there was a hint of a laugh in his voice.
"I have... felt better. I am sorry I could not..."
Truth be told, his head was feeling a bit fuzzy, but then most of him was feeling a bit fuzzy. He tried to find clarity, but it kept slipping from his grasp.
"Snakebites. That's what they said wasn't it? Ma'am I promise you I will see to it that these people are punished for what they did to you. It may not be any time soon, if that was anything to go by, but some day, we will see their ranks purged from these streets."
Ruairidh and Braxton slowly and painfully made their way to standing, Braxton using the wall as a support, and Ruairidh using Braxton's leg.
"Thank you for wrapping us up. It's much appreciated. This here's Ruairidh, I'm Braxton Rannells. We were on our way to the Pokemon Centre anyway when we bumped into you. I need to get Ruairidh there to make sure he's ok. I hope you are uninjured as well, and you're free to join us. If you would like, you can tell me a bit more about why you were targeted. In addition, I wouldn't mind asking you about this city. I am new here, and there are things to understand about this 'turf.'"
Braxton reached down and grabbed his second pokeball from his belt. He released Blaire. "Hi Blaire, care to join us? Ruairidh and I got a bit bashed up. Hope you don't mind walking with us, we may need you if we run into any trouble. Sorry for not letting you see any of the action. Unfortunately, we weren't fighting quite as long as I would have liked, or I would have gladly seen you into the fray."
Blaire looked quickly at both Braxton and Ruairidh, and gave a worried"Marsh."

"Don't mention it, mate." She speaks a little faster than anyone else you've met, as if she feels that if she doesn't get it out now, she won't get it out at all. "I wasn't any good at the breaking things bit, so it was the least I could do to put you back together. And don't call me ma'am, pal. Makes me feel older than Runecircle. Well, not quite that stodgy. The name's Lillian. A right good thing we met you." At this she beams.
"Now...as to what those fink-rats were after? I'd say jink... er, you know, the jangly stuff? Coin? Didn't have none of that nonsense, so they took my pendant instead. It's been in my family for... well, a long time. All that history-stuff is boring. The present is where it's at, bud. Oh, yeah, where was I? Um... right, pendant. You see, it's got some magical mumbo-jumbo about it that lets the wearer know when my family's close. Couldn't rightly tell you why that happens, but, it does. And I kind of need it to find my bro. We were traveling across Eidola, looking for some trace of the people upstairs. Bro thought he'd found something, went off to have a peep. That was the last I heard from him. I followed his scent, erm, figuratively, of course. Being able to have a sniff would make this a lot less of a tizzy. Anyhoo, got into town, next thing I knew? Wham, bam, thank you man, I got my pendant yoinked. And then., uh,.. now." Finishing her story, a bit anticlimactically, she shrugs.
"So...Braxton, was it? Thanks for doing all that hero-jazz. Try not to get shish-kebabed next time, okay? Er, well, not that I want you to do something that might lead to you get shish-kebabed, or anything!" she adds hastily. "Hey, but if you're raring to go at those jerks, I'm willing to tag along. Hope you don't care about having your ear talked off your noggin. Bro says I'm a teensy bit of a hassle that way. Also... I'm a bit of a deadweight in a tussle. Can't do any of that fancy-schmancy fighting or anything. But I'll do anything else I can to lend a hand."

Braxton looked over to her. She was young, very passionate. She reminded him of a boy, Brendon, from back home. The smile on her face and the twinkle in her eye. "Aye, I'm sure I could use some company in this city, and if you're willing to assist us against our 'fink rat' friends, I would appreciate anything you can offer. Tell me Lillian, what do you do? If we're going to fight I'm going to need to know what you can do to help us catch those rats. Have you got any pokemon?" on the assumption that she gives him the answer he will begin walking to the poke centre with her "Don't worry about being chatty, it can come in very handy in some situations I'm sure! Plus, good conversation can be hard to come by.
As to your pendant, what use would they have for that? I wonder why they would go to the trouble of sending six people to rob one woman for a pendant. I'll admit though, I could use with something magic myself. I'm up here from down south searching for traces of my father. He was a commander of a small group that was coming by this way some time ago. I'm trying to see if anybody has heard of him."Braxton carried Ruairidh as they walked. The Riolu struggled to walk. Not that Braxton was much better. In all, they made very slow progress. Blaire walked ahead looking about the path and in the surrounding area for any other thugs, every so often giving a nervous look to Braxton. Blaire wasn't a fan of scouting ahead. Braxton will likely continue on with small talk till the pokemon centre unless something of interest happens

"Sorry, mate," she says apologetically. "Don't have any battling buddies. Never saw the point, really. Well, not until now. Bro took care of that for the most part while we were traveling. You don't think that if I could have done something, I would have done it to get out of that tussle? Nah, I'm a lover, not a fighter. I can get a good read on people, though. Not that that's a boon when all you're reading is bad news, no?"
"And... they didn't exactly send people." She sounds a bit sheepish. "I kind of, maybe... uh, got just a teensy bit lost, and tried taking a shortcut. That... didn't end peachy, as you can see. And I don't think they know that it's got mystical... something-or-other. I think they just got the idea that they could hawk it for a fair bit of cash. And I'm sorry about your pop. As you can see, I know all about missing family. Who knows. Maybe we'll take a gander at something that could help you out."
After what seems like a long time, but really wasn't more than a half hour, you finally make it into the Pokémon Center. Inside, the attendant on duty gives you a worried look. "Oh, my!" he says. "Are you alright? Oh, dear...did you run afoul of the Snakebites? Those damn miscreants are getting bolder. But, sorry, I'm neglecting my duties. Come into the back so I can have a look at you injuries. Those of your Riolu, too."

Braxton turned to Lillian with a hard look in his eye, "I guess that'll teach you for wandering in neighbourhoods like these. Trust me, I've seen my fair share of Snakebites. They're always the same. Big and tough when they're in a group, cowards when they are alone. It's why you never find them alone, and why you shouldn't let them find you that way. I am glad that you were not hurt."
Upon stumbling into the Pokémon Centre, Braxton relaxed a bit. He was at a safe place, and Ruairidh could be tended to effectively.
After passing off Ruairidh for treatment, Braxton turned to the attendant
"Sounds like these Snakebites have a name for themselves. What can you tell me about them? Do you know who else they have targeted? They have robbed this young lady over here," Braxton gestured to Lillian, "and I intend to help her recover her stolen goods when we have recovered. Any information you can offer is highly appreciated. I am new in town, so I need to ask, how have the local authorities been dealing with this problem?"

Sorry, man." The attendant says, getting to work healing Ruairidh, "I don't know a whole lot. I steer clear of that part of town. You might be able to get some more info out of someone who knows the area, but I don't go there. I just patch up the injuries. And...the authorities," the attendant sighs. "Well, I hate to say it, but they just turn a blind eye. You have to understand, this isn't Azure Cove, or Land's End. We don't have much crime here, and that means a tiny police force. Enough to stop a drunken brawl or two, but that's about it. But ever since the spring started drying up, tempers have been flaring. The force has had to be occupied just keeping order at City Hall. Really...it seems like the gods have abandoned us."
"Ah, cheer up, guy. I'm sure things will be all hunky-dory before you know it. ...I hope so at least. Besides, I'm sure the gods would have to have a pretty spiffy reason to abandon everyone. Right?" She does seem to be a little more downcast when saying this, though.
The attendant doesn't seem much cheered. "Thanks, miss. I guess you're just a bigger optimist than me. Well, you'd have to be, with having your stuff stolen and all. Uh... by the way, sir. If you're going to go looking for the Snakebites, I'd... well, I'd warn you against it. But, if you're dead set on going, I might check out, ah," he lowers his voice, despite no one else being in, "Kelly's Stop and Shop, on the eastside. It may not look like much... but she's the biggest information broker in the city. Nothing goes on without her knowing about it. So you should be able to get the location you need... for a price."

Braxton looked at the Attendant, "Many thanks."Braxton had resolved to see this woman soon enough. However, he had decided that, being a broker of information, she would likely be just as available in a day or two as she was now. It was better to rest and regain Ruairidh's strength than to endanger themselves so readily. After his wounds were tended to, while Ruairidh was still being helped, he decided to have a talk with Lillian. "Lilian, I want to apologise in advance for any delay that our recovery period may offer for the recovery of your pendant. However, want to ensure that both Ruairidh and I are prepared for the fight ahead, and in the meantime I think Blaire could benefit from some training herself. If you have other things to do in the city, that is fine, but if you would like to join us for some basic training, you are more than welcome." The following questions will be asked of Lillian in due course if she sticks around Braxton until it is bedtime "I would like to know more about you. Where did you grow up? Tell me about your brother, he seems an interesting character. Have you any pokemon of your own, or do you have any experience with pokemon? Tell me more about your strengths, I would like to know more about your uncanny ability to 'read' people. I intend to visit this Kelly figure for some information, and it might be useful to weed out the good and bad information."

"Eh, I don't do any of that stuff that involves having to whack another living thing. But I'd be chuffed to stick around, see how things are when you guys are on an even field. I've got nothing to do that can't wait... well, truth be told," she says, chuckling, I've really got nada about what this city has to offer." Soon after training with Blaire, the Attendant returns with Ruairidh, all happy and healthy. "Take care, and good luck," he says, returning to his post. Looking outside, you see that it's starting to get dark. "Well, y'see, I don't actually know where I was born, but I started my journey in Runecircle, so I guess you could call that my hometown. Quaint place, but a little too quiet. Bro liked it, but he was always a little quieter type. As he always likes to say, he's the "better half"." She grumbles a little. "Like, two minutes! That's all he's older by! Ah well, I still love him, even if he can be a bit overbearing at times. And... strengths? I dunno. I guess I always see sunny-side up of things, make friends easily. Well...it's more I just don't shut up, and eventually we find something in common somewhere." She grins, then shrugs. "Never really thought about it before. And, I guess I've just got good intuition, or something like that.""Well, it's getting close to dinner, and I haven't eaten anything since the morn...that seems like an eternity and a half ago, now. Although," she says, grinning. "Time flew 'cause I was having fun. Well, at least, after that whole being threatened with a pointy piece of metal thing... Now, what do you say we grab some chow from the Center Kitchen. It isn't much, but at least it's free."

Braxton was glad to see Ruairidh healthier again, feeling much revived himself. "Good to see you recovered friend. Next time, we will fare better, I promise."
"I do sometimes wish I had had siblings. It was just my mother and I. She is a kind woman, and a hard worker. She always loved listening to stories, so I think you are the kind of person who she would very much enjoy the company of somebody like you." His stomach growled audibly, "Food would be good. Free is even better."
Braxton, once in the Centre Kitchen, got some food for Blaire and Ruairidh. You have done well today Ruairidh. Far better than anybody could have expected. And Blaire, your training is coming along nicely, but don't think you'll get off easily because we've been roughed up!" He laughed, "Don't think I didn't notice you cutting corners on the water gun accuracy training. I'll let it slide this once though." He smiled and handed both the pokemon their food.
"Lillian, would you mind if we sat outside to eat? Ruairidh and I have always enjoyed eating outside in the evenings, and we try to do it whenever we can."

"I'm all good with that. I've loved the feeling of being outside, of zipping between hither and yon, seeing what the world has to offer. Just makes you feel so alive and free, am I right?" Looking around, you notice that the Center has a rooftop garden, with tables up there where you can eat and watch the sunset over the city. Getting up there, you see that it's empty of other people. Well, come to think of it, so far you haven't seen too many people in the Pokémon Center at all during your stay. Probably has something to do with the drying up spring. Sitting down with a large salad that seems to have more than a dozen different kinds of fruits, vegetables, and berries, Lillian asks "What about you? I know you mentioned that you came here scouring around for your pop, but where'd you come from?"

Braxton sat on the ground beside Ruairidh and Blaire. He leaned over his plate of dried meats, bread, nuts, and a questionable gelatin-looking dessert. Braxton seldom had sweets in his growing up, so the fact that there was one for free was exhilarating-- perhaps more so than it should have been for a man of 22. He did his best not to show it, but anybody looking would think that he hadn't eaten in weeks with how fast he inhaled the meal.
"Ruairidh and I spent a few hours every night just sitting and eating berries for a very long time before we became proper companions. Whenever we can, we like to get back out under the setting sun. It's good to remember happy memories. Keeps us remembering who we are and why we fight for what we believe in."
As to where I came from, I am from further south than here. My family is from Azure Cove. Not much more to say on that matter though, dad went missing a while back, and I'm here trying to find him. I believe you said once, 'the present is where it's at.' He led a special forces unit up this way, confidential stuff. Even I don't know exactly what he was doing. My mother just told me that he was up near Godspring, so here I've come.
You mentioned Runecircle? I've only really heard the name in passing, what is it like there?"
Braxton finally reached his prize-- dessert. He looked down at the packaging for this treat and carefully removed the protective film. The contents were slightly creamy-looking and seemed to jiggle quite a bit. Carefully with his soon, Braxton dipped in and scraped up the tiniest sliver of this dessert. He wanted to savour it. He slowly popped the spoon in his mouth.
Immediately a musty taste filled his mouth. An abrasive, almost chemical burn hit the back of his mouth and he wanted to gag. Whatever was in his mouth, he wanted nothing to do with it. His forehead became creased as he fought the urge to spit it out. He wanted to try and stay friends with Lillian, she might be able to help in his journey as he was helping in hers. Maybe this was some sort of traditional dessert from this region. All he knew, this tasted nothing like the few times he got to have a piece of candy or small pastry back in Azure Cove. He did NOT like this.
With all his might, he managed to swallow the slimy substance. He slowly lowered his spoon and mumbled, "Eyes bigger than my stomach I guess. I am quite full now," despite having not eating very much at all (he was saving room for dessert).

"Whoa, man! You sure have a stomach like a Gulpin! Sheesh. You sure you don't need a Rapidash to eat or something?" she jokes. "Yeah, remembering the good 'ol days is swell. It's good to hear that you guys have a strong bond. Makes me feel grand to see that. Runecircle? I'm sure you've heard all about all the mumbo-jumbo and hocus-pocus that goes on there... Yeah, that's pretty much it. There's a lot of strange ducks - most real nice, mind you - who come there to seek enlightenment, power, or other whatnots." She shrugs. "Does mean that it's got a pretty big oculist society, lots of devout people, and so forth, so that's pretty chill. I liked it. Rest of Eidola's pretty nice too, though."
At Braxton eating his bit of gelatin, Lillian says "I don't blame you. That really doesn't look one jot appetizing. Want some greens to get rid of the taste?" She holds out the plate of salad she was eating. Those berries look like they might be able to drown out some of the taste.

Braxton immediately flashed back to Ruairidh extending the berry to him the night they met. A small smile appeared on his face. "I owe you a debt of gratitude Lillian. I suppose I am just not used to the local cuisine. Would you mind if I grabbed Blaine and Ruairidh one as well?" If she says yes read the next two paragraphs Braxton reached over to her plate and grabbed three of the bright berries. He passed the largest to Blaine, "For keeping us safe as we got returned. I shudder to think where we would be without your help." Blaine's eyes sparkled with joy, "Marsh! Mar-shtomp." She grabbed the berry and began nibbling it. Braxton turned to Ruairidh and extended the other berry, placing it in his pay carefully, "And to my good friend, for staying by my side today. I might not be standing here if it had not been for you." "Grrriiii. Ri ri." Ruairidh met Braxton's gaze and held it for a second before turning to his berry as well. if she says no, begin here instead
Braxton popped the berry in his mouth. It burst into sweet vibrant fruit juice in his mouth. The musty taste lingered slightly, but this definitely helped wash it away.
"I wonder what it is that is making the lake here dry up? Seems like people are getting worried."
