The building Hatui approaches is shaped roughly like an upside down "Y", the cable that crosses the road connecting at the top. The gap between the to lower parts is a massive entry way, easily ten feet tall, the rails do not lead to it, but they can be seen inside. Within, the air smells cold and damp. Sitting on the track is a strange cart on metal wheels. It looks as though it would stand vertically upon entering the mine shaft, but at the moment, it rests at an angle. It is connected at the back to a thick steel cable that continues up the track behind, which becomes increasingly vertical as it ascends to the upper part of the building.

Zee was quite content to follow the others around, especially Mezzo. His suggestion that they search the abandoned facility seemed like a good enough idea to her. Even if there wasn't anything they had in particular, searching the facility might allow them to discern some things about what they might find underground. Besides, if there were leftover picks and shovels, perhaps picking them up for their potential use in the caves would be a nice pickup in itself. Of course, Zee wasn't sure how much use she could make of the picks, but it was a nice thought anyway.
As they approached the building, Zee released Lillette into the air. Perhaps the little bird could find another entrance that might have items of use. Otherwise, Zee was quite content to follow the others into the facility. She hadn't been up into the mines before, and she was interested to see the way this ran from start to finish.

Baraz watched for a bit as the others wandered over to the buildings. While it might be worthwhile to check it out on the off chance that someone had left something there he doubted that much would be left, another group of explorers had come this way before after all and they would most likely have had the same idea. With another glance at the mine entrance, he started to follow the group. Walking past the first building and toward the barn.
"I'll check the other building if you all are looking through this one."
Once he reached the building he would try and find the nearest door to peer inside.

Lillette flaps up around the structure, inspecting the various sides. Most of the windows are boarded up, and she has no luck getting in that way. When she reaches the very top, she's able to poke her head inside the building where the cable enters, but when she returns, she returns, she is not carrying anything.
Baraz crosses the road, following the cable high above him, held in the air by wheels attached to metal latticework. The barn-like building is built on a similar scale to the previous structure, the cable entering a port some four stories in the air. On ground level is an ordinary wooden door that stands slightly ajar. Inside, the merchant finds a few stairs that lead to a raised wooden floor. It looks to be some kind of waiting room, with a metal desk near the far wall, and chairs around the room. Various frames hang on the walls of the room, likely containing information about the mine for prospective customers. There are two more doors here, one each on the wall to your left, and the wall across the room from you. Compared to the size of the building, this room is extremely small, clearly not consisting of more than a small amount of the structure's total interior volume.

"Let's see if we can't get the cart up and running again," Mezzo says. He sees Baraz go over to the other building, but he isn't too worried. Something told Mezzo not to worry. Not because Baraz could defeat anything he found, but because nothing would be able to catch the merchant.
The bard then walked over to the cart. Judging by the condition everything was in he was willing to bet that these carts were used by Explorers. Mezzo looked around for some sort of controls or mechanism for moving the cart.

Looking around the interior Baraz thought about how well the place was holding up. He'd pictured the mine as falling apart but he supposed that the mine must not have shut down that long ago, or someone was maintaining it. There was a thought since he'd come over here alone getting caught up in a fight wasn't a good option. Better to let himself be known and hope that would cause anything that was potentially hostile to show itself. Patting Precious once he called out.
"Hello! Is anyone in there?"

Next to the cart on the floor is a single metal lever. There's nothing to indicate what it does, but its proximity to the cart makes it obvious that its intended to be used from within the vehicle. The lever itself is less rusted at the base than the tracks and other stationary pieces of metal. It looks like it could probably be pulled without too much trouble.
At Baraz's call, there is no answer. The musty air seems to dampen his voice slightly, and he's left feeling very alone. The floor creaks noticeably beneath his feet, but it seems stable enough not to collapse.

"Should we get in the cart, or should we just follow beside it?" Zee asked Mezzo as she approached him and the lever. With Lillette returning to her without having found anything, she felt content to just continue exploring this way. "I'm pretty light, so maybe it would be safest if I got in alone. That way it won't break or anything."
Honestly, the idea of getting in a rickety old cart and following its movements sounded pretty daunting. That said, mines were meant to be sturdy places. The cable looked pretty strong, and the place wasn't necessarily in disuse. Besides, following in the upwards direction looked like it would be all but impossible for Zee, who wasn't the most adept of athletes.

Hatui followed the tracks back further into the building. They eventually started going upward vertically to the upper part of the building. "I wonder where the tracks go," he wondered out loud. It was a statement more than a question as he fully intended to find out. He looked around for stairs, a ladder, or even anything he could climb up onto to further examine what was up there where the tracks went. He was a curious individual sometimes, and while he probably had no idea how this technology would work, it didn't hurt to further examine the building. Besides, it shouldn't be too big of a deal for Hatui to climb his way up, even if he couldn't find stairs. The only thing he really had to worry about was whether the supports were degraded enough to break under the strain of his weight. In any case, he supposed he would find out.

Behind the sloped track is a complex mass of gears, wheels, cable, belts, and tubs. They zigzag downward from the peak of the building where the track ends. Among all the mechanisms are several platforms, separated by roughly a story each. They are connected by rusty vertical ladders. The occasional rung looks newer, as though they've been replaced since the mine went out of operation.

Having found some ladders leading to several platforms up above, Hatui turned to Moai, and said "Stay here, friend. I'd ask you to catch me if I fell, but that would probably hurt worse than hitting the floor." He chuckled and gave the rock a pat on the back to show, while technically serious, he was only teasing. He approached the ladders and saw that there had been at least some upkeep to them by somebody. Perhaps this place was more utilized than they initially thought or Explorers often did just this as well? He put his hands on the rungs of the ladder and began to climb, intending to stop and observe at each platform along the way until he was at the top.Hatui Matuha made an Athletics Check! | 2nhueOOh4d6 |

Climbing the ladders turns out to be fairly safe, Hatui reaching the first platform without any of the rungs causing problems. As he inspects the machinery adjacent to the first platform though, his foot breaks through the sheet metal floor. He's able to pull it back out easily enough, but it instills further caution as he continues.
Each of the platforms are level with one of the bins in the machinery. There don't look to be any controls, only the slanted belts that lead to and from the bins. When Hatui finally reaches the very top, he finds a massive spool of steel cable that runs down the track, eventually connecting to the cart below. At the top of the spool is a gear connected to another series of mechanism. The gear itself though, is noticeably not connected to anything. There is another gear a few inches away, with teeth the same size. It is connected to a wheel on which rests the stationary cable that leads out the top of the building.

Hatui stood there and stared at the bizarre mechanisms and gears, trying to figure out how exactly any of this might work. He knew nothing about technology, but he wasn't necessarily bad at logic. Perhaps he could figure it out? After a few frustrating moments of analysis, Hatui called down to the other two and described exactly what he saw up here. "What do you think I should do!?" he yelled down, curious as to whether they had any more insight into this situation than he did. Hatui Matuha made a Technology Ed Check! | 0GIbi_Q91d6 |

Mezzo considered the cart while Hatui was climbing up the ladder. "It's clear from the way that the cart is designed that we are meant to ride in it," he says. Considering his surroundings, he looks up the steel cable. "I'm fairly certain that this ramp is to give the cart some momentum. If we could get the winch working to pull it up..."
Almost as if on queue Hatui calls down. Mezzo looks up to where he is perched, amazed at how easily he got up there. "Does it look like there is something out of place?" he shouts back. "Like a spring or a gear or something?" Mezzo hardly knew what he was talking about, but like any problem that's where he would start. Step one: make sure all of the pieces are in place.

Well, he supposed that was a good sign. He stepped inside and listened to the floor creaking, he guessed he really wasn't going to sneak up on anything that had decided to keep quiet. That was most likely a good thing. Walking over to the nearest door he opened it wide with one quick movement. Looking inside he began examining it for anything useful. If he finds nothing of interest he continues on to the next one. Perception 7lvCfx1O2d6 2d6

Hatui stared long and hard trying to decide what he should do. He knew nothing about technology. At the mention of a missing gear or spring from Mezzo, Hatui decided to take a closer look at the strange cog that did not seem to have its teeth connected to anything. This was a gear....right? It was a few inches away from one that looked similar. Did they perhaps slot together maybe? Or maybe there was an interconnecting piece that went between the two? Hatui first examined the pieces, poking them to see if they moved or budged toward each other easily. He would not force anything for fear of breaking it. In the event that this examination leads to nothing, Hatui searched the area around him, looking for a similar cog or something that might slot into both gears. Perhaps it fell out and was laying here on the platform somewhere? If he can't find that specifically maybe he could find something at all that looks like it might connect the two? Going through the door on the left wall, Baraz enters what looks to be the rest of the building. In the center of the great room, upon a stone floor, is a massive metal drum. Cluttered around it, connected to cogs of a more mundane nature, are a multitude of Steel Pokemon that are themselves gears. Their eyes are closed and they appear to be asleep. At the top of the goliath machine, the steel cable from outside connects to a pulley. In the corner of the room to Baraz's right is a cart full of chunks of coal.
At Hatui's inspection of the mechanism in the first building, he is easily able to intuit some of its basic workings. It would seem the two gears aren't missing a third, but that the gear on the building half of the contraption can be moved to nest with the gear connected to the trans-road cable. However, he is not able to move it himself; it is locked in place.

Baraz was quite surprised to see Pokemon in here. It seemed that this was still technically inside the Tranquil sea if they were being used in machinery like this, if they were feral there wouldn't be much of chance them staying stationary for so long. Thinking about it he wondered if it was a good idea to grab one, they might be bored enough just to let him take it with him and he was sure could make use of them. The machinery around them really didn't interest him much, it was pretty much useless to him and he didn't even want to bother to try and understand it. Walking more fully into the room he shifted himself into a pleasant demeanor as he tried to wake them up and make a good impression on them. He also sized them up, trying to glean what he could about them. "Oh my, what do we have here? I can't believe someone would just leave you all in here. It must be terribly boring."Pokemon Ed. Upon Hatui's discovery, he called down to the other two in the building "It looks like these two sets of gears mesh together, but the gears that need moved seem to be locked into place! Should I keep examining it or just come down!? Maybe something down there will move it into place!?" He wasn't sure what else he could do from up here, but maybe learn more should they get the cable car working. If they just get the cart working, they could certainly expedite at least a part of their trip through the mines.

"I bet it's this lever!" Zee called back up at Hatui. "Let's try pulling it when everybody's in the cart," she suggested. After watching him nimbly get up the set of ladders despite the old facility, she was just hopeful that the track would work properly. It seemed like a good idea to use it, especially if it allowed them to bypass part of the mines. It looked like the other sets of Explorers might have used this cart already, so it probably hadn't killed them. Not only that, but they seemed as if they'd figured the mechanism out before Baraz finished searching the other part of the area, too. With their Duckletts in a row, they seemed to be in good shape for the time being.
"Thanks for taking a look, Hatui!"
