Riding on the back of a rampaging sea monster, the group made quite a sight as it arrived on the outskirts of Pewter City. A mid-sized city nestled in the foothills of the mountains to the north, Pewter City was larger than Viridian City and by far dwarfed sleepy little Palette Town. The pathway led directly up into the heart of the city, with a Pokemon Center only a short walk from the edge of town and the bug-infested Viridian Forest. The town map in the Pokemon Center revealed the location of the Gym, found in about the middle of Pewter City, the Poke Mart right across the street from the Pokemon Center, the Pewter City Museum on the north side of the city, and a small cluster of stores on the eastern edge of Pewter and right at the beginning of Route 3. Those specialty stores, judging by their names with titles like “Marvelous Fish and Game,” “Moon Rovers,” and “Rock Slide,” sold goods useful for those braving mountain trails over or the arduous hike through Mt Moon. In the southwest corner was a few small farms, while the north and west was principally residential areas.
Mt Moon, although it had been visible even from Palette as a shape in the distance, was much closer and in sharper relief. The trees of Viridian Forest had obscured it as the party approached, making the difference all the more startling. It soared high into the sky, taller than even the other mountains nearby, a sentinel standing watch over the pathway between Pewter and Cerulean. Route 3, leading up to Mt Moon, wound its way along a valley floor between a number of rocky hills and smaller mountains, and judging by what Buzz said earlier there were plenty of battle-hungry trainers to be found along the route.

Emboldened by his capture of Deadwood, and elated by Puluga's evolution, Marshall was finally starting to feel like this pokemon training stuff was worthwhile after all. Riding on Puluga's head, a good fifteen feet in the air, Marshall glanced down at his companions as he contemplated where he was going next.
Church was the first to catch his eye. Riding the second to last fin, Church seemed to constantly be in contemplation. While that might seem to run counter to Marshall's "act first, think later" philosophy, Marshall had found over time that he actually started to value Church's wisdom. Church had a tendency to come up with some great plans, and Marshall found himself rather enjoying being the arm that executed the tasks. 'He might make a great leader yet...'
Amber was grasping at Gyarados' tail with all her might, in what was probably one of the worst seats. Marshall had tried twice to help her up to one of the higher, less bumpy positions, but she seemed to prefer being closer to the ground. Even from the start, Amber just seemed she was entirely ill-suited to this lifestyle, both physically and emotionally. And yet, she persevered. She rarely complained, even when she took off her shoes at night and Marshall saw painful looking blisters on her feet. In that way, while Marshall knew the least about her thanks to her reserved nature, he had grown to respect her discipline. Something was driving her. Maybe he'd ask someday.
And that left Terry, who was walking alongside the sea monster. Terry was an odd kid, in so many ways. Younger than the others, he had a fixation on bugs that Marshall just didn't understand. Marshall had seen lots of bugs at this point, and other than Terry's and Buzz's, bugs hadn't impressed him all that much. And yet, in the proper trainer's hands, he'd seen bugs strong enough to rival The King, which was unbelievable. There was no doubt the kid was smart too. Terry had an almost encyclopedic knowledge of pokemon, and it was unreal how many pokemon Marshall had never seen before Terry could name on sight, and prattle off all sorts of facts about. He was an invaluable resource, for all his quirks.
'And yet,' Marshall thought to himself, 'if I catch word of Aria, I will leave them in a heartbeat. I can't lose track of why I am here. She's the only reason I'm even alive, and I'll be damned if I leave her alone to go play "Pokemon Master." This is all just a means to an end. I can't lose sight of that.'
As they approached the entrance to Pewter City, Marshall had Puluga slow, and then stop. "Let's walk the rest of the way," Marshall said as he ran down Puluga's back. "Thanks buddy!" Marshall recalled Puluga once his friends had disembarked.

As Terry walked along beside the freshly evolved Puluga and his friends he hummed to himself, mentally counting his pokemon and the ones that could be found in the forest. 'I didn't see any Pinsir or Caterpie, but Albus, Lelia and Tacita more than make up for that.'He thinks contentedly. 'Iola is definitely pulling her weight despite the poor reputation of the Ledian line.
As Pewter City comes into view through the trees Terry's grin grew wider and wider and he started to fidget in anticipation of Mt Moon and the fossils within. Once the others come down from Puluga he starts talking.
"So. Shall we hit up the Pokecentre and Mart then head out to Mt Moon?"

The wind making his hair stand on end, Church coudn't even summon a gasp as he rode in Puluga's back. If he had imagined what his journey with Pokémon would have looked like, back when he hadn't started, he would not have imagined riding a sea serpent over the rushing treetops.
The Gyarados itself seemed pretty content, either from being able to soar the skies with it's majestic presence or the fact that it could now breathe air. Maybe both. This Marshall kid was quite the character, but despite his brazen exterior, he could see that there was a lot more depth to him. He seemed stern, looking a thousand miles away and muttering something under his breath.
They descended from the serpent's back, and walked to the entrance of Pewter city. He wondered if Scarlett had already made her way past the Gym Leader.
He answered Terry's question quickly: "Sounds like a plan to me, let's heal up and then go fossilhunting. Let's try to keep it simple on the first entry, ok? We're not really prepared to fully explore a cave like that just yet."
Besides, he was almost flat broke. They should battle some Trainers, then supply themselves with spelunking gear.

i1380.photobucket.com/albums/ah182/chrystalrogue/anime_human_rainbow_dash_by_shadiestorm-d6kkiht%20avatar%20size_zpsglsfgpyc.jpg After the group handily trounced a trio of schoolkids and took their lunch money following an afternoon of Pokemon-hunting and exploring Mt Moon’s foothills, trouble visited them while they rested up in the Pokemon Center outside Mt Moon. Trouble in the form of a girl with technicolor hair. She kicked the door open and stormed inside before pausing a moment with her hands on her hips, glaring at everyone in the Pokemon Center before her eyes lit on Marshall. “You!” she shouted as she pointed at him and his friends, drawing a Pokeball from her belt. Much like her hair, it was a color it shouldn’t be; instead of red, the upper casing was orange. “You beat up my little brother and his friends! I’m here to beat you up and get their money back!”

Marshall is mid bite of his dinner, regaling a uninterested Amber about the time he had a suspicious mole on his side, when the girl bursts in. He turns to regard her with a grin. "Hold on just a sec! Marshall winks at the rest of the group before taking one more colossal bite of food and stands up to face her while chewing. "Alright, now what's this about beating up kids? I thought I did that earlier, but it turned out to be a pokemon! False alarm! If you're itching for a pokemon battle though, I'm always game!"

Church eyed his dinner plate. Replicator food was still something to get used to, but hey, it was something. Besides, after having crawled through a Raticate nest, hiked through the woods and soared through the air atop a Gyarados, and then hiked again to the foot of mt Moon, he was very hungry. Battling sparked the appetite, too.
He opened his mouth, preparing to incorporate a forkful of noodles and...
A burst of colors was standing just beside their table. Worse, she was shouting something at them. Probably at Marshall. He peered, spaghetti still near eating position. Yep, it was Marshall.
Oh heavens no. Marshall had stood up. This meant they would have a conversation, which meant that invariably, the fact that Marshall's net gain had gone for Church would pop up, given Marshall's brutal honesty and Church's inability to tell lies. He finally took the bite of spaghetti, if only to give himself an excuse to shut his mouth.
Why couldn't they ever have a nice and comfortable evening?

"Do you think I should mention that I'm the one who took the money?" Terry asks Church with a whisper. "Or should I find someone willing to take a bet on whether Marshall will win this?" He thinks for a moment before finishing the last of his burger.

You and me, right here, right now! And after I get done beating your Pokemon to a gooey pulp like you did my brother's Pokemon, you're gonna give me the fifteen hundred PYen you took from him and his friends!”The nurse cleared her throat and pressed the PA button. “No Pokemon battles in the Center, please.” “Right outside, right now!” the girl amended hastily.

Not bothering to point out the factual inaccuracies in her statements, Marshall instead adopts a shit-eating grin and follows her, calling out, "And when *I* win?"

Marshall rushes over to the Center's door and holds it open for her to exit."I tell you what," Marshall says with a smug look, "Since you set the stakes at $1500, that is what the ante will be. If you manage to win, I will pay you $1500. When I win though, you'll pay me $1000, and you'll give your brother back his portion of the $500 he put into the first ante, so he isn't out any money. That seems fair to me."

Church looked at Marshall as he exited the Pokémon Center. He looked at Terry, perplexed, and then back at his unfinished meal.
A minute passed.
He mindlessly stabbed his noodles with his fork as he reflected.
Had that just been real? They said that for each Pokémon species in a given region, another species would tend to occupy its role or counterbalance it by opposition. Pidgeys, Starlies, Taillows and Spearows...
He could swear just for a moment that Marshall's exact equal and opposite had just strolled in and challenged him to a Pokémon battle. The Positron to his Electron, the SodaPop to his Poké-Cola.
He stabbed the noodles with his fork, grumpier this time, twirled them and kept on eating.

On one hand he probably should be trying to dial this down and be the voice of reason, since Church had obviously gotten mentally lost somewhere. On the other hand this was probably going to be the most entertaining battle to watch other than camping out at the gym. Terry thought to himself.
"Try and beat him up anyway!" Terry yelled, grinning as he exited the Pokemon Centre. "Full contact brawl! Fight!"

Marshall strides back into the Center with his trademark grin. "What a chump. We were supposed to use two pokemon. She didn't even make it to my second one. She also ran off without paying me my ante. Oh well. The battle let me to see a Fighting pokemon of hers that gave me an idea for a few new moves. Not a total loss, eh? My food didn't even get a chance to get cold!" Marshall looks about. "Where'd Amber go?"

i1380.photobucket.com/albums/ah182/chrystalrogue/Scarlett%20Oak%20post%20avatar_zpspnywqiog.jpg “That second battle, however,” a familiar blonde said as she walked in behind the group, “was just sad.” Scarlett evidently had changed her clothes since they parted ways at the old man’s cottage; she wore a bright blue long-sleeved V-neck with a red-and-gold S-shield printed on the chest, a black pleated skirt and thigh-high stockings. She wore her belt slung low on her hips with her Pokeballs on the right opposite a pouch on the left, though she still carried her pack slung over one shoulder. Scarlett flashed Church an apologetic smile as she set her pack down. “Sorry, I was watching that fight between you guys and those girls. I’m guessing you don’t really have much time studying the tactical side of Pokemon battles? More than just basic type advantages, I mean. I know you guys are strong - like, really strong, but you can’t solve every problem by just throwing a really powerful Pokemon at it and battering it into submission. Those girls beat you by working together, but there’s nothing those bimbos had that you don’t.” She jabbed a finger at Church’s chest. “You ruined my perfect record. Don’t humiliate me by making rookie mistakes like ignoring simple tactics like ganging up on a single target like their birds did on, um, Terry’s Pokemon, or having your Pokemon dogpile on the Sandshrew to keep it from blasting everyone away.”

"Hey Scarlett." Terry says cheerfully, mentally planning out his where he'd be looking for fossils first. "You get the Boulder Badge yet, or are you out here recruiting for your team?"

"Well excuuuuse me, perfect winner. You're not gonna let me have a bad day ever, are you?" Church replied, taking a step back at the offending finger. He looked her in the eye and smiled.
"How have you been, miss Oak? Everything alright? How good, so have I! I, too am delighted to meet you again. I'm really not with my head in the game today, but then again, it's been a strange couple of hours lately. He pointed at Marshall discreetly and quetly added "Did you know there's an equal and opposite force to that guy? Well, we sort of met her earlier."
"In all seriousness, though, thanks for the feedback and keeping me from getting sloppy. Even in your..." He deliberated for a moment "...Imperative tone. I promise to do right by your sake next time, alright?"
A realization came to him. "Wait. Were you watching that whole time? And you didn't even say hello? How did you know where to find us?"

i1380.photobucket.com/albums/ah182/chrystalrogue/Scarlett%20Oak%20post%20avatar_zpspnywqiog.jpg “Hey, Terry,” Scarlett said in the sweet-and-kind tone girls use when addressing small children, giving a little wave before she turned her attention back to Church. “I - I was out here hunting and training my Pokemon,” she said in answer to both of them. Despite her frown, there was a bit of a blush visible on her cheeks as she answered her rival. “I couldn’t find a Grass-type in Viridian Forest, so I’m training my Nidorino and Pikachu. It’s not like it’s hard to notice a big three-on-three battle in the middle of the route, especially with that big dumb-” What Church said finally seemed to dawn on Scarlett and she did a double-take, looking at Marshall in something approximating real horror, her voice steadily climbing in pitch. “Wait, another blockhead? As in someone equally as dumb and obnoxious as him? There's two of them?”

"Aww, c'mon Twig, be nice. You never know if you'll wander into another hole and need me to rescue you...again." Marshall says, before bringing his bowl to his lips and loudly slurping the remainder.
