Kai let's out a chuckle as Evelyn tries to start something with Cole. HE shook his head, turning around to go check on Keahi since everything seemed to have calmed down.
Except when he turned around, he kind of froze as he saw the glow that came over Keahi, her form suddenly expanding into a new shape. When the light dispersed, The small lizard was certainly a lot bigger, or at least seemed like it since she now was standing up.
When his shock finally ceased, Kai's mouth went into a grin as he shouted, not really taking into account the Pokemon they just saved. "Look guys, Keahi evolved! Isn't that great?!"

"Actually, that's a good idea" Cole says with a snap, more of a spark in him than there had been for a while "This is a great way to compare each other as Trainers. We caught them at the same time, from the same place, and they're from the same flock. So whats say we do a little one on one with them after we've had some time to train them. Either after Lavaridge, or Mauville."
The side of his mouth comes up in a smirk and his sticks his tongue out a little "Unless you don't think you'll be up to my level that is"
Cole blinked a bit as now the second of his companions Starter Pokemon had evolved. He was filled with a mix of emotions, led by pride for Kai and jealousy as he still hadn't got Hab to his max potential yet. But he tried to shunt the negative feelings off to the side and only focus on the positive "Dude that's awesome! Guess we'll have an even easier time with Gyms from now on"

"Look, you really think you'll be able to see a big difference in the, like, three days it'll be for Lavaridge? If anything, Mauville's a better bet." Evelyn grins. "But, you better bring it. Because I'm not going to let you show me up that easily."
Ayah tentatively crouches down at the edge of the Spinda's clearing, getting down to more their height, and just softly speaking to them, after smiling at Theo. "Hey, don't worry, it'll be all right now. They got rid of the birds, you don't need to be scared anymore..."
Ruby more just wades through the clearing, avoiding the Spinda, instead going up to make sure that the last bird isn't about to get up again. The little clown thing wanders over to also peer at the bird, and mimics her nudging of it with her foot. "We probably don't want to stay here too long," she says, "You guys did a number on this thing, but it doesn't seem to be out too deeply. I don't want it to hurt anyone if it decides to lash out when it wakes up."
"You worry too much, Ruby," Evelyn says, laughing. "We took care of it once, we can do it again. I'd rather people have their chances to make friends here." She turns to Theo. "What's with your beef with birds, anyways? One steal your lunch as a kid, or something?"

"That's great Kai!" Theodore considered the very noodley lizard with its vibrant colors and long eyelashes. Looked kinda girly, but he decided that would be really rude to say in front of the girls. He turned his attention to Ayah and Ruby, pleased at the sight of the blue haired girl making friends.
Evelyn asked one of the doozies and the teen cocked his head for a moment. How to explain this. "You ever have a goal, where there was a persistent obstacle that you were never better for overcoming, it is just always there? More of a nuisance then a challenge? That's birds n me. Grandpa has one of the finest berry farms in the region. Planting season, gotta chase em off from digging up the seeded berries. Growing season gotta chase em off from eating the new shoots. Flower season gotta keep em away from the bugs that come through and help the berries grow. They tried to eat Six a couple times besides. Then berry season rolls around and we are fighting them for our crop. Pidgeys and Starleys are the worst of em." Theo snorted.

Kai took a minute to dance around with Keahi, looking more like they were just hopping in a circle than actually dancing. By the time they were done and making their way over, Theo was just finishing the tale about his bird issues.
"How do you feel about Rowlet then? It's a grass type bird!" He was curious, since the boy seemed to like grass types quite a bit. He brought out the Dex and began looking through to see if he could bring the entry up and show them all.

"Ignoring T's past experiences with birds" Cole says as he pockets his new one "Ever since we started the trip, every time we've run into a bird Pokemon it's been bullying or trying to kill another Pokemon. I know, I know, circle of life and all. I've seen the Pyroar King. But that doesn't change the fact that they've ALL been bullies in one way or another. Even Kale was when I caught him. So I kinda get where the guy is coming from."

"Yeah, that makes sense," Evelyn says, nodding. "I can see that something like that whittling down the resolve of possibly even the most staunch bird-lover. I'm still liking the look of these ones, though. Shiny." She grins. "Gonna get a mirror polish on it."
It seems in the end that Ayah manages to make friends with one of the Spinda, who toddles along with her, though she does still look a little uneasy about it. Ruby seems to have hit it off with the little clown-mime-thing, at least to a general degree. Enough for it to be around riding on her shoulder with a happy look on its face. Ruby still seems to be giving it side glances at some of its antics, though - it just makes innocent surprised faces when she does that.
The remaining Spinda scatter when the last bird on the ground begins to twitch and look like it's going to get up soon, leaving the Trainers alone on the trail again (well, alone save for the mostly-unconscious Skarmory).
Continuing on their way, the group finds that the ash is beginning to lessen, with far more green properly visible and far less sneezing and coughing occurring. In fact, by the end of the day, when what's presumably the rest stop comes into view, there's no more real sign of the volcano. Well, except for the mountain looming off to the side of them. But, other than that. The air is a little stuffy, but that's about it.
The rest stop seems to probably share Theo's opinions about birds, given there's a large berry patch out back of it, all surrounded by a thick wire cage. There look to be parts of it that could be opened for pollinators, but that's only 'practical' because it's a small enough area for someone to sit out there and scare away and feathered fiends. It's all tightly shut for the night, though.
The front is open, however, a ball ringing when they step inside. "Oh, hello, come in, please, make yourselves comfortable," a voice comes from off to the side. There's an older woman sitting in front of a TV, pausing some older movie, looking over in greeting. "There're plenty of rooms upstairs, and I'm sure you've had long days if you're coming in now, so, just make yourselves at home. I always enjoy company. And just having young people under my roof again. Are you coming from Mauville? Lavaridge? Fallarbor? Please, I always enjoy hearing tales of travel."

"Ain't never heard of a Rowlett, that another of them aloler Pokemon?" Theodore considered Kai for a moment. "Spose if it's a grass type wouldn't have no need for bugs an little fer berries, so maybe we'd get along." He shrugs thoughtfully.
It was nice seeing the greenery not being choked out by all the gray again, and the rest stop reminded him of his grandpa's place in a lot of ways. Politely, he slid his hat off realizing the proprietress was female. "Evening ma'am, much obliged, we moseyed up this way from Fallarbor. Heading fer our second badge in Lavaridge, but we were gonna part here fer a bit. The girls were heading long the path, and the boys were takin the desert."

"Y-yep, we just came from beating up some ferocious birds... well, maybe ferocious is the wrong word. They kinda went down super easy." Kai was going to leave his hat on, until he saw Theodore taking his off. He awkwardly made to move to do the same, stuffing it into his pocket and looking down a bit as he blushed in embarrassment.

Cole sort of awkwardly scratched his head as people removed their hats "Yeah like they said. Just looking for a place to rest up before splitting our parties for a bit." It felt weird to stay in a place without offering any money or anything so before he knew it, Cole was sort of shrugging as he spoke "Also, I know you were saying you liked hearing stories and stuff. If you want I can make us all dinner, I used to cook for an Inn in Verdanturf, and we can tell you a few stories from our journey so far. We haven't been travelling for long, so we won't have many stories, but I'm sure at least some of them will be interesting" Just not the ones where they fought people with monstrous powers, two of which were in their group....

"Ah, up north," the woman says, nodding. "Hopefully the ash wasn't too hard on you. Happens a lot to travellers, though. Regardless you can rest it off if it was. The birds too. Oh, those little things just love messing up my garden." She furrows her brow. "There was something that I was going to say, since you were headed south, what was it... oh, yes! Do be careful down there, because people have been mentioning some rambunctious little ruffians around where the path splits. Been enough of a pain for those people coming from the Fiery Path and deep desert... they're often rather worse for wear."
"I think we'll be fine, ma'am," Ruby says, looking at each of the Trainers in turn, and smiling. "We've... dealt with worse than a few punks, I'd think. I'd worry more about them."
"Not that we'd actually try to hurt anyone!" Ayah quickly adds. "Just... stop them from hurting us."
"Sure... yeah. That." Evelyn's voice gives the impression that it'd mostly depend on how she felt.
"Well... just be careful, dears. I'd rather nobody got hurt, but it's safer that you know that there could be dangers. Beyond the ones you know to expect. I'm sure you're all prepared for the desert and volcano. But, if you need to rest more, you can always come back here. I love the company." She looks up at Cole. "Oh, and that's a kind offer, dear. If you'd like to cook, you can rifle through the pantry. Find something you'd like to throw together. But I don't want you to think that you'd have to. I'm more than willing to make something. But, I won't stop you. And I'd love to hear the kinds of stories that you have."

Rambunctious Ruffians sounded right up his alley, but given their repeated loss to the girls, and Theodore and Kai's recent loss to Cole alone, the boy wondered if they could manage. Theodore couldn't help but smile at his friends and traveling companions, each moving him in unique ways, tempering the great man he would become someday. "A battle in the wilds of lawless Hoenn." He comments with a grin.
He kept close to Ayah, engaged in soft conversation about their pasts, perhaps aspirations as well, and just winded down from a long day worth of walking.

Kai perked up again at the mention of telling tales of travel. Sure, they didn't have a lot of tales around here, but Kai had plenty of his childhood about heading up to Wela Volcano Park. He happily divulged tales about him going to meet Kiawe up there, traveling with him the distance... Quite a lot of talk about Kiawe. Well that and his Pokemon.
"I don't know about if I'll be able to, but I kinda want to get a Marowak like Kiawe's. He had a bunch of cool ones but that one stands out to me... not as much as Salazzle, but I have one of those. Just evolved on the way here!"

Cole listened from the kitchen as both of his companions told their stories. Eventually he came out with a few plates full of food and sits down himself "See I'm surprised no one told the story of our battle against Roxanne" Cole says "It's the best story, that should be told, of our journey so far."
He settled back and smiled "The story starts the night before, with Kai and myself running off into the tunnels in order to get a last minute 'something' in order to have a better shot. See I specialize in Fire Types, and Kai also started with a Fire Type, so the prospect of a Rock Gym was a little intimidating, especially to me since I'm an alumni of the Trainer School and really wanted to make a good impression on my fellow alumni."
He leaned back forward and sighed "I didn't do so hot in most of the fight, still trying to pull off some tricks with Fire, and getting stonewalled when I tried anything else. But both T and Kai, they were on a whole other level. Hitting Roxannes weak defenses, hitting her with weaknesses, with The Magnificent Six towering over the battlefield and when they eventually fell, Lone Ranger was able to flit around and blast things down as well. T's pokemon were powerhouses, just like you would expect from someone like him. That rough and rugged exterior hides a really competent battler and a shrewd tactician. And Kai was able to swap between Types like a pro, even when his Mon was almost down he was able to unleash massive attacks. Not to mention, Kai was the last one standing, being on the verge of loss and pulling a victory for us from the jaws of defeat."
Collecting the dirty plates as everyone finishes up, Cole stood up with a smile "So yeah. That's the story of how those two managed to win us a badge even when everything was stacked against us"

Ayah chats with Theo, talking about her childhood growing up in a house by the sea in Mossdeep with her sister, always enjoying the cool breezes wafting from the Shoal Archipelago. About not knowing exactly what she wanted to do, but sure that it lay elsewhere - not in the scientific community of Mossdeep, where everything seemed to revolve around progress. It's part of why she applied for the journey, to see people, and to find out if there's any place that she really felt like she belonged. Some place that she could call home, that she wouldn't feel all swept up in things, and she could just... be. Oldale was nice-feeling in that regard.
"Oh, well, those all sound wonderful," the old woman says to Kai, "though I admittedly don't know much about other regions that much. So a lot of that went over my head. But, Cubone… I'm fairly sure that those can be found in the desert over yonder. If you go that way, you can sometimes hear their cries at night. It's... rather sad, really. I always feel bad for the poor things."
"Ah, yes... Gym Battles. The pride of many. Everyone who's taken the Circuit on has their favorite story to tell, and all of them are deeply personal. I love hearing about them." She nods, looking at him with a smile, before chuckling. "But, I do have to ask. What was the 'something' that you were looking for? Did you ever find it? Because I do love hearing stories like that, too. The little unsung victories. The things that wouldn't make a book, but that you yourself feel most proud of. Do you have something like that? Because it seems to me that the story you told was mostly about your friends."

Cole looked around at the others in the room before letting out a chuckle that turned into a sigh halfway through "Honestly? That 'something' was just a Pokemon with a type advantage. Now, I'm not gonna say the trip was a total waste for me since I met two of my partner Pokemon in there. But none of it helped me in the battle. I went in full of confidence, thinking I knew everything and how to fight her and how to best be me. But I was wrong" his voice sort of fell and he looked at the pile of dishes be was still holding, noticing his hands were shaking a bit "But I guess to answer your question, no. I never found that 'something' I was looking for. Instead that's become the focus of the journey for me. It's not about winning anymore. Its" he fell silent for a moment "it's about finding the thing that makes me me"

"That's where we're all at Cole." Theodore spoke loud enough to pull the whole room to attention, watching their culinarian over his shoulder, watching the other boy from under his bangs. "Kai is finding his way to being like his idol, and getting that nostalgic taste of home where he can. Ruby wants to make her own way without attachment to her legacy. Evelyn wants to do her Pops justice. Ayah to take things at her own pace. I want to be a man someday, soon as I figure out what it means."
A brief pause, and Theodore inhaled slowly. "We are all finding what makes us unique. That is the journey. Don't have to be lonely or troublesome, and I won't hear boo about you not giving and taking your licks neither. Been some of the best company a guy can ask for."

"What Theodore said, Even if we have some tough times, overall it's been great traveling with you guys" Kai scratches the back of his neck a bit nervously as he tries to say it better than that. "I wouldn't trade you guys for another team is what I guess I'm trying to say?"
"And uh, I don't talk about Alola that much...do I?"

"That's not exactly it..." mutters Evelyn, but it's in a subdued tone, and she doesn't really call attention to it.
"I see that you've found at least something special," the woman says, smiling. "Even if it wasn't the thing you were looking for. But, you know what? In all my experience, it never is. By the end of a journey, you're a different person. What you find most important is something that you never even expected when you set out."
"Besides," Ruby says, "there no harm in learning that you were wrong about something. Happens to everyone. And, as mentioned, you've got people around to help pick you back up and support you on the path you forge for yourself. Same goes for everyone."
"Yeah," Ayah adds, quietly. "I'm... I'm sure you'd do the same for us, right?"

"You talk about Alola as much as I talk about cooking" Cole says with a shrug. He looked at Ev when she muttered but didn't bring attention to it either. He didn't really have any moral high ground with secrets right now.
He smiled a small smile "But you're all right. And I wouldn't trade any of you either. Not my team, or you all" He looks between the girls as he says it "You're quite the rivals, and I'm glad Ev was nosy and waited around when the professor was talking to us about how awesome we all are" Cole winks at the green haired girl and walks into the kitchen to finish up the dishes
