The final week of college was here. After years of all the private tutoring and all the classes, Finn was just 168 hours - give or take - away from becoming a professional Pokemon trainer. Before that came the file with all their starter choices. No one really knew when it was coming until it came. Finn did know that he was assigned to one of his favorite dance teachers, Miss Vienna, who accidentally leaked out this information in their conversation after the class few days ago. Finn was not a jerk though and promised to keep this information to himself. Returning to his dorm for the night, Finn found a few files hanging by the door. He found his after in between those of his two dormmates and pulled it out. Now, it was just a matter of looking for a comfortable place to read through all the files.
Option 1
Option 2
Option 3
Carvanha, M
Height: 2' 9"
Weight: 50.9lbs
A Carvanha might not be a dancer's first choice of partner. This is very true. But this Carvanha is quite timid even when in a pack. There is no need to worry though, it has all the battle capability of a typical Carvanha, but he just does not find it enjoyable and only really look to fight when he is threatened by other Pokemon or if he considers them intruder to his territory, which rarely happened anyway. The ranch owner found out about it on some internal testing they ran.
What this Carvanha is interested, is to explore the unknown. On his few trips out to the sea(he is from a ranch near the sea), he dives so deep into the sea that it almost kills him...and repeat that everytime he goes back to the sea fearlessly, as if he is drawn by something down there. No one knows for sure, but he is on check every since then whenever he approaches a deep body of water. Be careful and not let him be alone when you are around the beach.
His curiosity does not stop in the water either. Unlike many Fish Pokemon who prefers to not move a lot in thin air as it can be exhausting on their own body, this Carvanha often tries to leap up above and actively trying to reach high into the sky for some reason. He also accept any Pokemon who can carry him up in the air but the rancher does not allow him to fly on the back of a Flying Pokemon just to be safe. Maybe he wants to see what is up there? It is yours to find out if you pick him.
This might just be a better starter for a explorer but I don't think I have any in my list that fits that bill. I have tested its performing abilities in the week I have him and he actually does well, if enough attention is given to him. Make sure you keep him attentive to your command or he will be doing his own thing. Otherwise, he is a simple-minded Pokemon to train and will do as you say. Who knows, one day maybe you two will become the best shark duo of the world.
Recommended Crunch
Nature: Preferably any of the "softer" natures, but your choice
Ability: Either
Background: Unknown Explorer - Comes with incredibly high curiosity for the Unknown
Increased: Acrobatic/Athletic/Focus(Extremely focus when he has to and come with the athleticism to travel deep and high)
Decrease: Any of Guile/Stealth/Command/Intuition(Has no desire to hide nor be subtle with things, uncaring for social interaction and prefers to be doing physical activities)
Traits
Space Walker - He wants to walk the earth, the sky and the ocean. +1 to travel range on any surface, stack with any boost. Maybe it can one day swim in the sky?!
Wanderer's Luck - When one explores as much as him, one can sometime find unwanted stuffs that are useful. Can trigger the Pickup ability every 5 days when exploration are done.
Height: 2' 9"
Weight: 50.9lbs

Option 2
Illumise, F
Height: 1' 11"
Weight: 36.4lbs
For the second option, we have this shiny Illumise that finds no love. You might not believe this but this is the third year the ranch is trying to find a home for this Illumise. First year, she was assigned to Cobalion and it was no surprise no one wanted this. Last year, she was assigned to Terrakion and no one took it either. And that is how she ended up here. Honestly, I can understand. No one really wants an Illumise as a starter and it is a species that is regarded as "trash" by the Cobalions. Even the collectors do not a lot of value on her, which is the big reason the rancher decided to pass it down to a trainer instead of just selling it to the pet market.
Putting all of that aside, this Illumise is quite a friendly Pokemon and certainly puts a lot of effort into keeping her look pretty. The years of her not finding a suitable owner has not change her positive nature. It might just be her species. It is rumored that the Volbeat and Illumise species are very patient species, who look to find their perfect partner no matter how long it takes them.
The only thing I know you just have to do if you pick this one up is to keep a grooming routine on. She might be a Bug but she likes keeping herself tidy and pretty all the time. She might just be a better performer than a battler from what I see from her. All of these are why are put her as an option for you. You both might just hit it off if given a chance.

Nature: Cuddly/Patient/Lonely/Relaxed/Modest/Mild/Quiet/Calm/Gentle/Timid/Jolly/Naive/Docile
Ability: Either
Background: Pretty Girl - Keeping herself shiny and pretty
Increased: Charm/Intuition(Charm for look; intuition for artistic instinct)
Decrease: Intimidate/Survival(Not scary at all and wanting to keep her image that way; not a fan of getting herself dirty and tired in the wild)
Traits
Shiny - This is your regular Shiny with the regular Shiny bonus.
Artist Within - Has potential to become an amazing performer. No known bonus as of now but might be able to acquire bonuses as she develops.
Height: 1' 11"
Weight: 36.4lbs

Option 3
Ducklett, F
Height: 1' 3"
Weight: 10.7lbs
I really enjoyed the movie Black Swanna and the Swanna Lake ballet. But, if someone tells me that I would actually be looking at an actual Black Swanna in real life, I am going to laugh it off and dismiss that. Now, here it is in front of me, a dark Ducklett, pitch black in color and it makes me wonder if it would look like an actual Black Swanna when evolved. That is for you to find out, or maybe someone else if you pick another starter.
Why and how is it black? No one really knows. The scientists in Babel Tower has expressed their interest in her so maybe you will find an answer there if you are inclined. The rancher has no interest and thus, does not send him there for all the tests. The rancher mentioned that it is to protect him from further abuse.
As a dark Ducklett and out of the norm, childhood has not been kind to this Ducklett. You'd be surprise to know that not all Pokemon are naive and pure. This Ducklett does not really have many friends over the years in the ranch as most Pokemon just find him weird. The other Duckletts are especially hostile to him. This might seems like the plot of the children's tale, The Ugly Duckling, but this is actually happening, in real life.
In a way, she is kind of like you, or at least the "you" in the stories you have shared with me. You have learnt to embrace your difference and to keep a positive outlook on life and maybe you can pass the same thinking to her. It is important that you shower her with love and caring. Just like human, parental warmth is important to a Pokemon as well, especially so with her. Maybe she can be your Feebas, a species regarded as "ugly" that I am surprised you actually liked. I think she will teach you to learn to look, find and accept beauty deeper than the outside.

Nature: Preferably any of the "softer" natures, but your choice
Ability: Either
Background: The Ugly Duckling - apparently, it is the prequel of Black Swanna
Increased: Stealth/Intuition(She has known to avoid conflicts and bullies; and she has also learn to connect with her expression, to read and act upon them)
Decrease: Charm/Focus(Not a Muk but still ugly; all the bad things in her childhood mess with her willpower)
Traits
Pitch Black - Black as coal, save to say this Pokemon is not good-looking in today's sense of beauty. Penalty on Charm in most situation, -1 die in contests barring some situation, bonus(like extra dice and/or +X to score) when involving in stealth in a dark environment or night.
