Enya chuckles, "Good, kid, you're learning. I knew you had that spark in you. Keep it up!" Aster kicks at the Miltank. It grunts, but barely flinches. The Drapion pokes at Dusty for a moment, making sure that he isn't moving, before chomping down on the Trapinch again. The Miltank attempts to maintain its momentum and slam into Aster, but the release of the Pokémon and the camouflaging throws it off, and it doesn't manage to connect. Aster hits Miltank with Double Kick. It's super effective! Enya uses Pain Resistance to give Miltank +35 DR against the attack. Dusty takes 28 damage and an injury from Ice Fang.
Miltank misses with Rollout.

Dusty struggles against the rime on itself, wriggling a little while Mica continues to watch on a mix of confused and concerned. Mica begins a sketch of Aster with both legs in the air to one side.

Donovan keeps staring down the Miltank, growing more frustrated as it seems to shrug off all his blows " Aster, again. Same thing, don't let up" The Deerling pops back to being visible for a moment again, raining a few more kicks into the Normal type, before fading back to the same green as the grass Same as last turn. Aster slams into the Miltank again, and this time the bovine looks like it takes it a lot worse. It gets its balance back as the Drapion delivers a vicious bite once more to Dusty, just as the Trapinch breaks free of the ice. Apex unfortunately decides to mimic Dusty, and does nothing of any import besides look up at the Drapion. The Miltank decides to take a more proactive approach, and edges around Aster, before ramming him backwards into the spikes, making him end up next to the Drapion, who grins. The Miltank looks extremely pleased with itself. It isn't enough to fell Aster, but it looks like he's on his last legs. Aster hits with Double Kick. It's super effective! Dusty takes 54 damage, 3 injuries, and Faints from Ice Fang.
Miltank Disengages. Aster takes 41 damage and 2 injuries from Tackle, and is pushed 2m, taking 10 damage and is Slowed until the end of his next turn.

His fist shaking as Aster almost goes down in a single hit, Donovan ignores his better judgement and yells out " Aster! Charge the Miltank again! DON"T LET UP!" The Deerling dodges any response from the Drapion, limping back in front of the Miltank before turning around and kicking it with both back hooves one more time. Focused Training

Aster, defiant to the last, charges the Miltank and whales on it, causing it to at last keel over. Enya looks on approvingly, nodding. "There we go. That's what I'm looking for." She recalls the Miltank, before sending out a blue and yellow serpent on her side of the field. It's got a pair of vicious looking claws, as well as a fanged sucker mouth. The Drapion whacks Apex with one claw, almost as if it's telling it to wake up for a proper fight. Miltank takes an injury and Faints from Double Kick. It's super effective! Apex takes 20 damage from Knock Off.

Apex's eyes open a little wider, and it's usual dull expression draws into a rather angry frown. He lunges towards the Drapion with his claws. (Apex goes on 11 and uses Scratch. Mica Chronicles Knock Off.)

As the Miltank goes down, Donovan relaxes a little before snapping back into battle mode " Aster, good job but we aren't done yet. You can't get close enough to hit so how about you make it harder for the enemy to see Apex" Aster charges forward before skidding to a stop, sending a wave of debris flying over Apex and into the eyes of the Drapion. The pink Deerling then winks at the large scorpion Pokemon Focused Training again

Aster successfully kicks debris up into the Drapion's face, leaving the monster open for Apex to slash at, the Slakoth digging surprisingly deep into the chitin with its claws. Neither of those things stop the arthropod from swinging around Apex, and stinging into Aster with its tail, the Deerling crumpling, its last bit of energy drained. The Eelektross darts forwards, effortlessly jetting over the spikes that Rose laid down earlier, before crashing into Apex with an electrifying tackle, followed up with a raking with its claws. It's a close thing, though... if the Slakoth had been any more mobile, the eel probably wouldn't have managed to position itself right after that jet. Aster hits with Sand Attack. Drapion is Blinded and Infatuated for 1 turn. Apex hits Drapion with Scratch. Drapion Disengages. Aster takes 19 damage, an injury, and Faints from Poison Sting. Apex takes 29 damage and an injury from Spark. Apex takes an injury from Cruelty and may not gain Hit Points or Temporary Hit Points from any source until the end of the encounter.

Swearing under his breath as Aster goes down, Donovan freezes for a moment, not sure which of his remaining Pokemon to send out. Finally after just a few seconds, but what felt like an eternity for him, he tossed out Dandelion onto the field " Dandelion, this fight is looking a little hopeless, but I don't wanna give up. Let's give it our all! Show them your Gust!" The little Combee did its best and sent a massive, by its standards, blast of wind at the Drapion. Dandelion is out at Init 10

While Apex loafs around again, Dandelion manages to get in a good blow... unfortunately, part of the wind seems to shear off of the Drapion's armoured shell, and the rest is endured by the arthropod, it barely finching. It does throw off its aim enough for Apex to dodge its bite by rolling over. Whether that was intentional or just lucky is up to interpretation... Dandelion is not so lucky, though, as the Eeleketross floats away from Apex and fires off a beam at the Combee. Unfortunately, even though it's able to withstand the energy better than most of its brethren, it still crumples at the well-aimed hit, electricity crackling around the eel, preparing it for another attack. Dandelion hits Drapion with Gust. Enya uses Pain Resistance to give Drapion +35 DB. Drapion misses with Bite. Eelektross Disengages. Dandelion takes 41 damage, 3 injuries and faints from Charge Beam. A critical hit! Eelektross' Special Attack rises by 1.

Mica frowns deeply at Apex's lack of performance and recalls the sloth, giving her Pokeball a disapproving look before plopping down into the grass. "He barely even listened... that's enough Enya, I'm not good enough for this." She propped her head in her hands, fire thoroughly quenched from her belly.

Enya nods, before recalling her Pokémon and walking over. She crouches down in front of Mica, and puts a hand on the younger Trainer's shoulder. "Now, there, young lady. Don't be so hard on yourself. The young gentleman over there said that this was your first real battle, right? That's an incredibly brave thing for you to do, and you shouldn't feel at all bad that things didn't go the way that you'd hoped. Being a Trainer is a learning experience, and if you learned even one thing from this, then you can consider it a victory."She thinks for a moment, before rummaging through one of her pockets. She pulls out a small brass coin with a flame image embossed on it, and holds it out to Mica. "Here, take this. It's not a badge, just a token. I see that you have a lot of potential, and I want you to remember that whenever you look at this. And, at the end of your journey, whenever that is, I want you to bring it back to me, and just show me what you've become, in a no holds barred battle. Because I have no doubts that you'll be able to far surpass me given enough time. Don't let a single loss quench the fire within... I'm sorry," she looks at Donovan as well, "I don't believe I actually caught your names."Take 150 EXP and 1 TXP for this battle.

Mica turned the coin over in her hand several times, feeling it warm against her palm as the metal took in the heat of it. Her moping, sullen expression slowly shifting towards thoughtful, then excited. "It's better to lose when you can afford to, then be unprepared when you can't. Thanks Enya... in a lot of ways this is better then a badge." She smiled up at the firefighter, and then down at the coin. "My name's Mica."
Something seemed to snag the girl's attention mentally, her expression drifting to one side as though remembering something distant. "Enya? Why are there trainers? How come people feel the need to do all of this? I understand it's something to be passionate about, but I don't understand -why- we are passionate about it."
Before Enya could respond, Apex burst from his ball, lit from within. The normally placid sloth ballooned outward and upward, raising it's arms high in the air as it changed forms. Nearly as tall as Mica on it's own, the threatening posture made it seem all the more intimidating as it howled angrily.
"No!" The small girl was on her feet, pointing a finger in Apex's face. "You don't get to be mad! I get to be mad!" Apex shrieked back and took a step closer. "You let Aster and Rose get beat up while you were just resting, that's on you!" Apex's arms came down slightly, and he let out another screech. "I'm very disappointed in you!" Apex's claws settled on the ground and it made several small apeish sounds, walking bowlegged towards his trainer. The pokemon spread it's arms a little.
"Are you sorry?" A nod. "Okay." Mica held him and buried her face into his neckruff.

Donovan stood there after recalling Dandelion, the little Combee having crumples after a single hit. The young trainer sighed, his first battle had been a loss, his first gym challenge was a loss, he hadn't even been able to make it from one town to another without losing the Professor and then his friends. His entire journey so far has been defined by loss.
His right hand tightened around Dandelions ball, and he exhaled deeply, his eyes closed. Then Mica dropped to the ground and he heard he and Enya begin to speak. He listened to what the Gym Leader said. A 'learning experience'...He shook his head. He couldn't keep losing, even if he was learning. It wasn't an option to lose when he faced Axiom, or the Pokemon in the next Temple. He had to get strong enough to stop losing.
"I guess this is what I get for not listening to you before the battle" His voice was melancholy, but his mouth turned slightly up at the sides as he continued "But I won't make that mistake again. My name is Donovan Fleur, though Mica told you my first name when we first met. And don't worry, give us a few days to heal up, and we'll be back."

"Ah, yes, right," she says to Donovan, "My apologies, it's been a bit of a hectic day so far. And, I look forwards to it."
She turns back to Mica, standing up, after the girl's done with her Vigoroth. There's a twinkle in her eye, even if she doesn't acknowledge the event, instead saying, "Why are there Trainers? I don't know. I don't know if anyone knows why, or how, or when we started training Pokémon. It's much like language in that regard. And, everyone has a different reason for their passion. I can't tell you everyone's, I can only tell you mine."
"It all started when I was a child, growing up in Sunyshore, way over in Sinnoh. My mom and dad were never really around, so I spent a lot of time with my gramps. He was getting up there in years, so there wasn't too much that he could actually get up and do, but he still had that spark from when he challenged the League, and loved to do battles. I know now that he was always going easy on me, but it always seemed like such a challenge. But, win or lose, we'd always go, get some ice cream after, and he'd tell me a story of a trainer he met on the journey." She looks wistful, "Even when other things started to slip away, those were the things he remembered. Those memories were important. And that's what made me decide to try and become a Gym Leader. I wanted to be strong like him, but I wanted to be in a place where I could gather as many memories as I could. And create them with others. That's what being a Trainer means to me."
There's a bit of a silence before she continues. "Pokémon themselves are also memories. Leila was originally my gramps', named after my grandmother. I never met her, but it means I have a part of them both whenever I battle. And each of my others, that I caught specifically for becoming a Gym Leader, I named them after friends that I had to leave behind upon coming out here. It was hard... but at least it's as if they're battling next to me."

"Memories." Mica repeated, still holding Apex until he wriggled out of her arms. He was very huggable now, almost her-sized. While he watched, she fished through a book of sketches. At the bottom of Enya's, she wrote the word in cursive scrawl before tucking it away again. As long as she had her albums things would be hard to forget.
"Fighting because you have to, or because you are different or picked on aren't very good reasons.". She considered herself for a moment. "I should learn why Pokemon fight, then maybe I will find my reason.". She continued to fidget with the brass coin in her palm. "I agree with Donovan though, we will get some practice in, and be back in two days. You can't learn to grasswhistle first try."

Donovan listened quietly as Enya and Mica had a moment. Memories....yeah, that was as good a reason as any to do things. Though he felt a little cheated, his chance for a fun journey to discover himself being yanked from beneath his feet. He shook his head, chasing those thoughts from his mind. No, even if he had other reasons for doing this that doesn't mean that the journey couldn't still be fun.
Once they finished their conversation, Donovan spoke up, his voice much quieter than earlier, much closer to how he had been when he first set off on his trip, just a short week ago "Is there anywhere nearby that might be a good place to train? I'll be honest, I'm fresh from Sinnoh as well, so I don't know the region really at all"
