As Brinn touches the altar, there's a sudden flash of blue light and a loud cracking sound. The altar snaps in two and a green gas begins to seep out, giving off a horrific smell. On the bright side, Brinn finds herself with a fancy new shadow surrounding herself, and Kotone finds herself with a fancy new pink sword. Although, perhaps for Brinn, that's more on the dark side... Get it?

As the gas seeps out Brinn struggles to pull away from the altar, fury etched on her face. It had been a trap. But then the weight is gone from her other hand and she stumbles away from the altar. Her relief is tempered by a...presence pressing upon her thoughts. She struggles to force it down, and it goes but leaves a hint that it is there to stay. Brinn shakes her head to clear it, noting the darkness that clings to her. She was possessed. "You couldn't have warned us about that foul odor?" She snaps at Anthony, still not entirely over the perceived betrayal.

Kotone starts to snap out something particularly insulting in Anthony's direction as the gas starts to surround her, before she starts coughing in the foul-smelling gas. It takes her a moment to clear her throat enough to speak again, and by that time she's pulled away from the altar almost inadvertently.
It feels like an almost literal weight has been lifted off her mind, and she actually feels a little calmer now. Not all that calm, granted, since they're still trapped in some sadist's fantasy game, but at least she doesn't feel that urge to rip things apart pulling at the edges of her emotions. The ridiculous pink sword in her hand is almost a minor detail in comparison.
She runs her free hand through her hair with a sigh. "... I guess you were right," she admits grudgingly. "Sorry." She goes over to make an attempt at comforting Sara. The keyword being 'attempt'. She crouches down next to the distressed girl. "Are you alright?"

I jump back as the altar cracks and a noxious green gas streams out of it. "Holy shit!" Not exactly what I was expecting, I'll be honest. "Didn't know it would happen, believe me. Wasn't exactly what usually happens when magic does it thing. You guys okay?"I move closer to the altar, once again studying it, both with sight and Arcane Eye, to see if any magic remained in it. I take a quick look at the demon gate while I'm at it, seems like it's the only way forward at the moment, and I'd like to know if we run head on into a trap. "I'm fine," Brinn says tersely, ignoring the pressure building once again. But once again the talk of magic comes up. She frowns, not that she was particularly happy before, and mulls it over. Could magic explain why Kotone had changed as well? Is that why the woman thought she was a monster? She hesitates before asking, almost demanding an explanation from Anthony, "I don't understand this place and it's magic. It can't be real but it has to be.... What does 'usual' even mean with magic? Aren't foul smells and bright lights normal? Is turning into a bug some sort of arcane art as well as these curses?" She stares at him intent on answers, though she isn't truly ready for any of them.

Sara would sniffle, the yelling finally quieting down, she looks around "y-yeah... Let's just get out of here" she looked terrified of everything right now.

Kotone frowns a little. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to upset you. I was upset and afraid because I was stuck." That, and she really hadn't expected Sara to react to the argument by curling up in a corner and crying.
She looks up when Brinn starts asking about the magic thing. And her transformation as well. "I don't know about these curses, but what I do isn't magic at all. Someone decided to tamper with my genes. I don't know how it works, but I've got something called an Apollyon Complex that lets me change." She smiles grimly. "They didn't expect me to turn on them, I think."

Genes? Apollyon Complex? Brinn asks, plainly just as confused by scientific terms as more magical ones. "And what do you mean turned on them?" She shows a bit more interest in this line of questioning. Betrayal was something she knew well. Maybe she had more in common with this shorter woman than she'd thought.
