The little mon waves his club up at Gladius. "Bone, Cubone!" it seems to have quite the attitude.
Now that a course of action has been set, Victor is easily able to determine north using the position of the sun. It's still before noon yet, and as the little troupe reaches the outskirts of the port, they find a barricade of junk and debris has been erected at the exit to the town. A pair of marine soldiers are standing guard, looking outwards anxiously, clutching their rifles even as a pair of small dog pokemon, one that was brown with a black splotch on the back and a "mask" of tan fur over its face, the other black and grey with oversized fangs, napped at the men's feet.
One of the dogs' ears twitch, and it gets to its feet, yapping a few times to get the attention of its handler. The two men, one rather portly, the other skinnier by a fair margin, jump slightly, before hustling down and coming together to block the barricade, crossing their rifles. The two dog pokemon simply sit at their heels, the light colored one looking alert, while the dark on sits back on its haunches and scratches its ear with a foot.
"Oi. No civilians allowed past the gates during this trying time." The skinny one declares.

As they made their way north Ezra put his new crustacean companion in an empty Pokeball. He tried his best to dry his slightly soaked suit, airing it out the best he could. It wasn't perfectly dry by the time the approached the wall of scrap but he supposed it would have to do. As the group strode up he saw the two guards, he tried to think of the best course of action. If they just beat up the guards that would mean anyone who came to check on them would know, even if they hid them somewhere a lack of guards tended to cause as much alarm as a pair of knocked out guards. Gladius seemed to be the kind of person that would opt for that as plan A. If talking their way through didn't work they could always use beating them up as their plan B. Once the guards shouted their command Ezra let a scowl fall onto his face, smoothly he stepped to the front of the group and cleared his throat. Putting on his best 'Clerk that has dealt with one too many idiots today' voice he began to set into the guards. "I have had it up to here with the sloppiness of this operation." Ezra wildly flung a hand above his head to indicate just how beleaguered he was. "I had assumed that the reports of the state of this operation were exaggerated and a secret inspection was unnecessary but I was obviously sorely mistaken. I understand that the pair of you are only doing your jobs but I must complete my orders, if you wish to be a hindrance the record will show it. If the pair of you wish to be one of the only parts of it that are positive than allow me to do my job and I will allow you to continue doing yours. At this point he let an exasperated acid edge enter his voice as he concluded. "Now, are you going to let us through or am I going to have to talk to your superior." Guile 12 to lie through teeth to the guards

Both men gape, even as their partners snap to attention at the tone that Ezra is using, before uncrossing their rifles and saluting. "No sir, apologies sir!" the larger man snapped out.
The other man doesn't look quite as convinced. "I hadn't heard about any inspection..."
His companion turns to look at him. "Well it'd hardly be a surprise inspection if they let us know about it, wouldn't it?"
"I suppose so, but even then the captain seems to always know when the inspectors are coming. Odd that."
"Well yes I suppose it is a bit odd, but we're to guard the gate's aren't we? Not fritter about what connections our captain may or may not have." The two of them seem to now be entirely absorbed in their discussion on the possible connections their captain has, and the implications or lack thereof. The two pokemon roll their eyes and step to the side, the little gray one pointedly going back to sleep while the tan and black one watches the group pass with bright eyes.

"Keep your heads down and your eyes and ears open for sedition and you might just make it out of this with your heads above water."
With that Ezra flourished his mantle and sauntered imperiously past the pair.

Victor was genuinely impressed by Ezra, a smirk plastered firmly across his face. Not a finger had needed to be raised, and as a result no alarm either. They were free to look into Gina's pursuer at their leisure without drawing more attention to themselves from the military or government at large. It was a good day. The little Pawniard rode on his shoulder, taking in the sights with it's odd eyes, Precious underfoot nearly every step of the way.

"Hey, don't give me that lip," Gladius said to the Cubone, playfully bonking it on its noggin'. "I just asked your name, no need to go wavin' that thing around. If you didn't have one you coulda just said so."
He looked up from the Cubone once, vaguely registering the Marines, and ignored them, walking on past as Ezra led the way. Gladius hopped the barricade, returning his attention to the Cubone.
"Hmm...there's plenty of things we could name ya...but lots of them are too obvious...," he said, picking a pokeball off his belt. "How about Roger? Y'know, like Jolly Roger?," he asked, grinning at the Cubone.

Gina had kept quiet and fed her pokemon the generously offered pokemon food from Ezra, listening as she was basically used as a bargaining chip to get Gladius to agree to aid the island...A bit unorthodox, but it seemed to work. She had to admit, the more they discussed this phenomenon and the Marines' connection, the more intrigued she became; the world was full of strange and mysterious things, herself included, and maybe looking into some of these during their travels would help her figure out where hers came from. As they headed north, Gina pondered names for the little Togepi in her arms, running through a few for the pokemon to consider. She seemed to have the most positive reaction to Maya, though, so that would be her name.
When the barricade came into sight, Gina returned Dolly to her pokeball but continued to cradle little Maya; if the Captain was here, he may have released some details for the Marines to keep an eye for regarding their little band of misfits, including the pokemon they used. Better to be safe than sorry, after all. As the soldiers spoke up, Gina thought about what tale to weave to let them through, but Ezra quickly took control in the guise of an irritated Marine inspector, which he pulled off admirably. Quite a show; even Maya gave a little, adorable clap for his performance. How her tiny stub arms reached far enough was a mystery for the ages. As for herself, she kept her head down and stuck close to Ezra as they passed through, hoping to be dismissed by the bickering idiots as a piece of arm candy dragged along for the inspection; if the Captain HAD sent out a memo regarding her in particular, it was FAR better to not draw any attention to herself. Just in case.
"...Well, that was quite a sight. Even I almost believed you for a moment." Gina complimented once they were out of earshot of the barricade, giving him a smirk before looking to Victor and Gladius. "So, where to now? Or are we just gonna wander around until some weeds show up to give us a hard time?"

Moving past the gate, the quartet finds themselves at the start of a field of sugar canes. Given the vines and the creepers that are tangling around the taller plants, as well as the haphazard nature of the new shoots you can see emerging from the ground; it seems that no one's been willing to risk tending the fields even this close to the town. How much of that is due to pokemon aggression, and how much is due to the interference of the Marines is a matter of debate.
There are still roads visible though the tall cane, the biggest and widest one leading to the north, and two paths branching out to the north-west, and a much smaller one to the north-east.

Victor surveys the tall canes warily for a long moment, lot can lurk in just one patch of deep foliage, and if memory serves the middle of Koolari is largely uninhabited. "Eyes open, ears sharp. Pretty sure this is the path we're taking to reach the heart of the island..."
Setting his bearings, Victor starts off.

After a little more raucous back-and-forth with the Cubone, Gladius bonked it on the head with a pokeball, making the capture official. Aquila flew over, perching on his shoulders.
"Hmmmm...," Gladius hummed thoughtfully. "I say we take that one," he said, pointing to the small, narrow path that went off to the North East. "The road less traveled and all that. That's what my gut says. Mmhmm," he said with a confident nod.

“Well to make others believe, you need to learn to make yourself believe in that moment.” Ezra said as he strolled along, he thought that had gone rather well. He suppressed the paranoid thoughts that threatened to spoil the victory, forcing himself to think positively about the accomplishment whatever might come from it. He examined the fields as they approached, taking note of the disarray. None of the paths seemed to jump out at him as being the best so he thought it might be best to just follow along. “Sounds like a plan to me, we might need to follow all of them eventually so it really shouldn’t matter to much.
