Rei is unable to discern any visible "mouth", but it seems likely that there is one hidden in there someplace. There's no sunlight down here, so it can't feed on that, thus it must eat something. One of the rock-flower-things suddenly snaps up a berry in the blink of an eye. Before Rei knows it, all the berries are gone, eaten by the strange plants.

Well that answers that question.
Rei leaves a few more berries so they all get some and comes back over to Maya. She puts her notes away.
"Well they don't seem too aggressive. Certainly a more passive species. ...Not something I mind considering every other seems to want to fight us. But we can probably move on."

Leaving the strange flower-rocks to their own devices as they are not hostile, Rei & Co head further in. The next area provides an even stranger sight. Odd sets of metal gears are floating in the air all on their own. They are just floating there, spinning slowly in place. After a moment, they seem to notice you and become startled! The floating gears attack!
