Matt frowned at the look Julie gave him "Sorry, you just didn't look like you were from around here, I just figured maybe your parents had worked with the professor before, or you just moved here"
He turned his attention to Steven when the other boy questioned him "Yup. 15 years on the J.S.S. Tsunami. Son of the Admiral and Commander of the ship too. You may have heard of it, Julie." He says, turning back to the girl "But most people call it The Battle Ship because it's full of really strong trainers. Dad is actually one of the top trainers in the whole region. I can't remember ever seeing him lose"

Looking at Julie, Val says, "Well, that must be nice. I'd have loved to live here. Even from what little I've seen - and felt - it beats Snowpoint even on its best day..."

Julie looks to Val and shrugs. Might as well get this out of the way early... "Yeah... most people think that way. Unfortunately for me, I hate heat, I burn waaaay too easily, and I don't consider living in the middle of nowhere with nothing to do and barely people around very fun. Maybe I would have liked one of the bigger islands better, but... Living here isn't as exciting as it sounds. At least not to me."

Steven tilts his head at Julie's words. On a small, scorching island... with no good way off and limited people around... absolutely zilch to do once you've gotten bored with the ocean... "I'd go stark raving mad within weeks. I don't mind the heat so much, but seriously, what is there to do around her? Once you're past anything to do with the ocean that isn't on a boat... I'd have fled the island years ago... You managed to stay here for about six years?" He sounds genuinely impressed.

"Hey," Val says, "at least here in the 'middle of nowhere' you can go outside. With colour around, too. Whereas if I wanted to go anywhere in my middle of nowhere? Well, on goes enough layers to make me have to waddle around like a Psyduck. And it gave me the coordination of one, too. And all you can see is white, white, white... and the occasional tree green. Believe me, this is a whole lot better."

Matt smiled "My middle of nowhere was constantly on the move, often miles away from any land. I didn't actually see a tree until I was ten" He looked between the two girls "So at least you both had that going for you"
Shaking his head, he laughed a bit "But instead of focusing on the negatives about all that, let's look at the positives! We're all about to go on our very own journey. I don't know about you three, but I'm pretty excited about that!"

Julie looks to Matthew, nodding in agreement with his statement. "Agreed! Even though it's still on these stupid islands... I can actually go to a city for once, it's been like six years! I could finally... go shopping for once, instead of having everything flown in! I've heard there's this amazing underground shop on Mandarin Island north that has the best tech parts anywhere, especially pokeball tech parts. Oh man, I could make such high quality cases if I just had better parts... I might even be able to make a storage cases if I could find the right parts. Oh man, that would be so cool, only a few people are able to make those. Although then I'd have to get a license for a Storage case, that would be a pain..." Julie blinks for a moment, then freezes up as she just realizes the tangent she went off on. Oh crap, now she seemed like a total nerd in front of them, nooooooooo! And she hadn't been regulating her volume either, hopefully Charlie hadn't heard her... An awkward blush crosses her face as she stammeringly tries to fix the situation in a somewhat defeated manner, speaking a quiet tone and looking off to the side. "I could also... find some pretty nice... clothes there too. Yeah, that would be niiiiiiice... heh. heh. heh."

"Well, I don't know much about the other stuff you mentioned," Val says, "But if you're wanting to go shopping, I wouldn't say no. I think I'll need some lighter clothes than I was able to get back home..."

Matt snapped, before pointing at the two other trainers "OH! How would you guys like to travel with us? Like I explained to Valerie earlier, nothing can get done on a boat without a good crew, and I think the same thing applies to journeys! Besides, the more the merrier, and you both seem like nice enough people!"
He turned to Julie in particular "Woah, you can make Pokeballs and stuff? That's really cool, I've only messed around with some basic repairs on the ship, I never even thought about building Pokeballs! How about everyone else? Any neat tricks hidden up your sleeves like Julie?"

Steven laughs softly at Matt's question. "Nah, no special skills on this side. I tend to... drift from interest to interest as I go, never really doing the same thing for any long amount of time. I can do a bit of advanced training, but beyond that... more of a jack-of-all-trades and a master of none, really. As for your other question, sure, why not? Traveling with multiple people should be loads more fun than traveling on your lonesome, right?"

Julie blinks in surprise, not quite sure how to handle being asked to travel with other people. She had always been so isolated on the island... This was perfect! Traveling with three other people who seemed nice enough, was like a dream come true, she could actually have friends again. It had been so long since she had real friends, and two of them were sorta cute guys too... And they thought that her making pokeballs was cool too! Maybe she'd finally get a boyfr- Okay okay, whoa whoa whoa Julie, slow down here, just going to be traveling together, that's all, they might not actually be that great. You're just over excited, that's all. Breathe, breathe...
After her mini-mental freakout, Julie composes herself and finally responds. "Yeah, I can make more than just pokeballs too. I can make cases that provide special effects too, and some chemicals for use with some of the cases... But enough about me, I'm sure it's boring you all and I can show you later if you're interested. Oh, and I totally forgot to say, yeah, I'd love to travel with you guys! Seems like a lot of fun~."

As you all converse, the lab techs continue to move about. Eventually the one who made the phone call emerges from the other room and starts to walk over toward you. Julie recognizes the Lab technician as one of the senior technicians, Jeff, and one of Professor Ivy's senior technicians. "Hey everyone," he said in a somewhat husky voice. "Sorry to keep you all waiting. My name's Jeff, I'm one of the assistants here," he said, obviously for the benefit of the other three. "Professor Ivy is down at the beach right now, checking on the research station. She has your new pokemon over there with her," he said, looking at Steven and Julie, "and she asked me to go ahead and bring you all down there to meet with her. Seems like they're having some difficulty with the relay station. If you guys will just follow me around back we can hop in the jeep and get moving," he said, motioning for the group to follow. Jeff leads you all out the front door and around to the back of the lab. There, parked beneath a small carport, is an open-topped jeep. Jeff hops in the driver's seat and starts up the engine, which seems to be running perfectly despite its apparent age. Julie knows that there are two such vehicles at the lab, both maintained expertly by Randy. It stands to reason that one must be out at this beach research station. "Alright, just hop on in and let's roll," Jeff says with a grin. His gaze falls on Julie, and his face lights up with a spark of realization. "Oh, that's right, you've never been out to the beach research station," he says. "I guess this'll be new for all of you guys, then. Cool." Once the seating arrangement is sorted, one person riding shotgun and the other three squeezed in on the back bench seat, Jeff sets off. It's not a bad drive. The dirt roads are fairly even, and Jeff is a good driver, so there is little jostling. The wind in your hair as you drive by is quite refreshing. "So, another batch of new trainers, right?," he asks, looking back over his shoulder briefly with a smile before refocusing on the road. "I remember back when I started my journey, geez, like 15 years ago...," he said, a pleasant, reminiscent look on his face. "Best advice I can give ya...is to have fun! This is the time of your lives. Make sure you make the most of it! No regrets!," he said with a grin. "And you couldn't ask for a better place to do it than the Orange Isles...each island has its own flavor, it's own little special treasures and hidden places that make it unique...," he said, another reminiscent gaze on his face. "But I wouldn't want to spoil it for ya," he said with a sly grin, looking back at his passengers briefly once again, winking. "We should be at the research station in a few minutes...I think you guys will get a kick out of it," he said with a grin. "Some people like to think the Professor is just a beach bum," he said, looking over his shoulder at Julie with a knowing grin, "but the truth is, we have to keep this place kinda under wraps. It's not a secret, exactly, but if too many people came by it would contaminate the testing, especially if they caught the pokemon. You'll see what I mean once we get there," he said, returning his gaze to the road. A few minutes later, the road began to descend toward some cliffs. As you rounded a corner, you came into a secluded bay, and it was quite a sight to behold. There were tall cliffs that fell away to a sandy beach, which opened into a fairly large bay. The mouth of the bay, a few hundred yards across at the widest, was closed off with a large net running from cliff to cliff. A small metal pier jutted out into the water, and there were a few monitoring stations on the pier. A small transmission dish was set up in the area, as well as a small generator. There were a number of technicians on the pier, including Professor Ivy's trio of assistants, which Julie knew to be the triplets Charity, Hope, and Faith, and what looked to be a small pokemon swimming in the water. As you pulled up to the pier, Jeff cut the engine, and led you onto the pier. As you started to walk out, a Gyarados carrying a woman suddenly erupted out of the water, which did not draw a reaction from any of the other technicians. The woman, which Julie instantly recognized as Professor Ivy, stepped off of the Gyarados and onto the sea, patting it on the side of the head as it returned to the depths. One of the triplets walked up and handed Professor Ivy a towel. "Thanks Charity," she said, drying off. She set the towel down and putting on her lab coat. "It looks like the Luvdisc and Clamperl have integrated well into the ecosystem," she said. "The Basculin are still being problematic, though. They're very territorial," she said, walking toward the group. "Oh, hello there," she said to Jeff and the trainers with a grin. "Thanks for driving our new trainers out here, Jeff. I'm Professor Ivy. Welcome to our little secret research station. What do you think?," she asked, looking at the trainers, her eyes resting on Julie for a little longer than the others.

"Whoa..." Val exclaims quietly, as she looks over the research station. It was nothing short of spectacular, with bright water rippling, and that sand... she hadn't really gotten a good look at it before, but it was nothing like the rocky front of Lake Acuity. It actually looked nice, soft, and welcoming. Hopefully the other beaches on the isl- "Aaaagh!"
Val recoils a little bit (okay, jumps back a fair ways) at the sudden Gyarados emergence. It takes her a moment to realize that there was someone on top of it... this was certainly a lot different than what she was expecting. All of the pictures of Professor Rowan she'd seen had shown him either in his Lab, or teaching a lesson of some kind to a group of trainers. A little bit of a giggle escapes her at imagining the perpetually-serious image of the Sinnoh Professor in a setting like this.
As she brings her mind back to the task at hand, she realizes that the Gyarados is gone, and that the woman who was on top is now in a lab coat and approaching the group.
Oh, so this is Professor Ivy... she thinks, at the introduction. Not what I was expecting, but, I suppose I should have expected that. Unorthodox region, and all.
"It's amazing, really." she replies to the question, "It all just looks so beautiful. I can see why you would want to keep it a secret..."

Steven gives a long (and false) whistle as they round out to the research station. "Impressive."
He takes a step back as a Gyarados jumps up out of the water, if for no other reason than to dodge the splash of water it brings with it. When he spots a woman who he guesses to be professor Ivy jumping of the giant serpent's head and walking towards them, he gasps, which he manages to (somewhat) cover up with a cough Sweet motherloving Kyurem! Are they serious!
He recovers quickly though, and after the professor introduces herself (confirming his guess) and asks what they think of the place, he nods in appreciation and answers: "It's pretty cool."

Matt spent the majority of the ride in the jeep unable to decide if he liked it more or less than just walking, still getting used to being on solid land. As they reached their destination, he stretched his arms upwards, before setting them behind his head and taking in the view of the bay, just as the Gyarados burst forth from the waves and deposited the Professor onto the dock.
Having spent his youth surrounded by powerful Pokemon, the boy was no less impressed with the ease that Ivy seemed to control the sea serpent, especially since it wasn't returned to a Pokeball, it seemed she wasn't just some lab jockey after all.
Shaking his head a little at the Professors question, Matt spoke up "It's quite the place, I'm surprised no one else has found it"

Julie quietly sits in the car ride, making note of where they were traveling on the island. While she didn't get out that often, and didn't explore too much, she knew enough about the island to understand relatively where they were and where they were heading. At Jeff's jab, Julie shrugs it off. Her mom had a reputation with near all of the other labbies at this point, and it was such a pain. And it seems she had been picking up some of her mother's opinions... Oops.
However, when she had gotten to the secret research station, her eyes naturally begin darting around between all of the technology, focusing on what the various pieces of equipment were and specifically what they did. Seems to her they were monitoring the ecosystem of this little sublet, but what exactly? She waves a little hello to the wonder trio before scanning the area, looking for Ivy.
At Ivy and the Gyardos' sudden explosion from the water, Julie didn't flinch at all. If anything, this was classic Ivy, and part of why mother always complained about her. Mom was even worse about adapting to the islander lifestyle that she was, and that's saying something. She paid close attention to what Ivy was saying, her natural curiosity getting the better of her. She didn't recognize Luvdisc, Clamperl, or Basculin... But she had never paid much attention to pokemon, or her mother's research into them, so she could be mistaken, however, it seemed Ivy was researching introducing new species. Wasn't that a bit dangerous? Oh well, Ivy was the professor, not herself. Honestly, she thought it was pretty cool...
At Ivy's question, Julie smiles, probably the largest she's ever smiled for being at the beach, but of course, it was more because of the research and cool tech than the setting. "It's pretty cool! I can see why my mother always complains about you coming out here, she's waaaaaaaay too stuffy and clinical for this sort of thing. Although, isn't it a bit dangerous to be introducing new pokemon to the ecosystem? Although, if you have the Luvdisc population stable, seems like you're doing a pretty good job so far!"

Professor Ivy smiled at the comments and questions about the research station.
"Well, it seems you figured it out Julie, very sharp," she said with a wink. "We are introducing new species into the environment, in order to study their interactions. With the number of people coming to the Orange Isles from other regions increasing every year, it's only a matter of time before new species are introduced into the region. We're doing that here, in a controlled setting. That net at the mouth of the bay stops any pokemon from getting in or out," she said, pointing at the net. "This Bay is like a scale model of the Orange Isles, with all of the different species of native water-type pokemon represented in just the right numbers," she said, looking at the bay. You all could see a small figure swimming on the surface of the water...
"And, of course, nearly all of the pokemon are wild, in order to truly capture how the various populations respond...that's the real reason we try and keep it a secret," she said, turning back to the trainers. "Otherwise we would have trainers sneaking in to catch all of our research subjects, and contaminating our data," she said. "Of course, some people still stumble in on us...but a few people stopping by for a swim is perfectly alright. After all, people do swim at the beaches around the Orange Isles," she grinned. "Of course, your mother prefers a much more hands-off approach," the professor added, looking at Julie. "Fortunately, the people that tend to find us have all been very respectful of our research, and kept our location secret," she said with an expectant look at the young trainers.
Jeff cleared his throat and Professor Ivy sighed, shaking her head. "There I go again, rambling on about my research," she said, "but that's not why you're here. I believe we have four new trainers beginning their journeys today, and two of them need pokemon," she said with a smile, turning back toward the bay.
"Riolu! Tympole!," she called out. The small figure out in the water seemed to stop and look toward her. "Come and meet your trainers!"
There was an excited reply-at least it sounded excited-and the figure out in the water swam quickly toward the pier. As it got closer, the small blue dog-like pokemon climbed up onto the pier as a small blue tadpole leapt out of the water. The little dog-person walked over, sopping wet, and the little tadpole bounced over.
"Steven, Julie," she said, looking at the two, "these are your first pokemon, Riolu and Tympole," she said with a smile.
The Riolu started shaking vigorously, spraying everyone with water, which Professor Ivy shielded herself from, and walked over to Steven. It extended its paw to the boy with a happy look on its face. "Lu, R-riolu!"
The little Tympole bounced over to Julie, hopping up and down, staring at her happily. "Tym-pole!"

Steven laughs as his new starter sprays everyone with water. This was gonna be fun! He kneels down in front of the canine, shaking the offerd paw while mirroring the pup's expression "Hi there, pal, pleased to meet ya! Looks like you and me are gonna be a team! I'm sure we're gonna get along just fine, don'tcha think?"
He thinks for a moment, before saying: "You're gonna need a name, ain'tcha? How does Sirius sound to ya?"

"This all seems rather interesting," Val says, still taking in the surroundings, and trying to see how many different Pokémon species she could spot. "How long has this been here? And how many different kinds of Pokémon are you studying right now?" Perception to count species: 11.
