You have begun to wonder if Captain Mutnegra ('please, call me Mutt!') will ever shut up. Since he's gathered the three of you, he's been babbling on incessantly. You know he was born in the Achaemian Empire, that the King was amazed at his swordsmanship, that his favorite color is green, that the ladies love him, that his breastplate is lined with kangaskhan leather. He hasn't said much about how he looks, but of course, you can gather that for yourself. He's a skinny man, almost gaunt in the face, with greying hair that seems to contradict his youthful personality. He's armored only with a breastplate and a matching rapier-dagger set.
Somewhere, as he rambled along while you all trotted through the fields of western Galla, you managed to pick out the names of your comrades.
Dumani is an exotic hunter from Ohtar. Erias is a mystic of some sort. Connor is a symbol mage.
. . . it would be really helpful if he could stick on a topic and give you more details.
"Oh, right. Well, now that we're off the main roads, I can tell ya why we're heading out here. Long story short, the King wants us to figure out why Miristan has their shite-eating whelps poking around our land. So we're going to cross the border and poke around their land. Track down an officer or something, rough 'em up a bit, then head back and let the big guys figure out what to do with the intel. Should be easy enough. We've got permission to kill, though I'm sure the Miristani's won't be happy with that if we have to do it."
He pivots on the back of his ponyta, suddenly riding sidesaddle as he stares back at you.
"Righto. Any questions for your valiant Captain Mutt?"

"Sir, do we have any disguises, paperwork, anything to help us in this endeavor? Because I'm really afraid that stealth is not one of my strong suits." Connor shifts nervously in Pyre's saddle. "And... well do they ever send officers out with patrols? Because otherwise it sort of sounds like we're going to have to hit a stronghold, or, um, kidnap someone from an inn while they're traveling."

Dumani gave a small look to Connor before returning his gaze to the grasslands around him. His eyes focusing on any object he saw in the distance. He wouldn't have guess that he would be near Miristan's borders again so soon, but at least he was tracking something instead of staying inside the king's castle. He shifted slightly in Yuna's saddle, before finally speaking. "We're a hunting party, looking for some Wild Tauros or something." He said, his accent being noticeable. It was as good as a cover story as any.

Mutt seems thoughtful, for just a glimpse of a second, when Connor asks about disguises.
"Ah. Right. Well, that is a great idea. Shame I didn't think of it earlier. That being said, I don't anticipate too many problems. Our mounts are swift, our hearts are true. Even better, they've been pretty light with border control lately. Our fine country's state of internal affairs has got them complacent, I think, and they're probably more worried about Elba and the Empire to their other borders."
When Dumani suggests a cover story, Mutt grins widely.
"Yeah, there we go. If we're looking at a fight we can't win, we're just a band of hunters. Wandering across an unguarded border isn't a crime, is it?"
Yes it is.
"Besides, none of you lot look much like soldiers."

Despite the man's gregarious boasting, Erias didn't find him grating in the slightest - he was enraptured by Mutnegra's bravado, taking everything he said at face value. The Captain seemed larger than life to Erias, and may as well have leapt from the the pages of his favorite stories, the way the boy was staring wide-eyed at him. Of course, he spared plenty of attention for the countryside they rode through as well. Nothing spectacular, but everything was new to him. It was certainly the furthest he'd ever been from the Ward estate, a modest swath of land skirting the Corus countryside.
He was both excited and nervous at the prospect of their clandestine operation. Ward had produced a score of noble knights in its time, but most of his forefathers had been the type to hold the safety of Crown and Kingdom above personal honor. His father had certainly never been one to shy away from necessary evils, if even half of the rumors he'd overheard from the house servants held any truth to them.
Though Erias had yet to discern the fine line that separated the necessary evils from the egregious ones, he was certain that their mission - his chance to prove himself as well - was critical to the security of the realm.
"Worst case scenario," Erias mused as 'Mutt' elaborated on the task at hand, "I can act like the spoiled noble scion I'm supposed to be? I'm not much of an actor, but it's better to not be taken seriously than to be considered a threat, right? I'm sure I can pull 'buffoon' off passingly enough." He certainly had plenty of firsthand experience with that sort of noble heir from the year he'd spent as a squire.
As they rode on, Erias tried not to let his uncertainty get the best of him. Beacon's presence went far in that regard; he'd grown close to the Ponyta quickly during his Ranger training, and while she could act jealous of Anima's closer bond at times, she had become a reliable companion.

"Yes. Quite. Playing the fool can sometimes be an asset," Mutt confirms with a wink.
They ride on for a little while in silence at that, before the land levels out and the brush springs up. Looming on the horizon is the beginning of a forest - the Darken Forest.
"There it is, lads. The Darken Forest - territory of Miristan, proving ground for their troups, and probably the biggest reason our noble kingdom hasn't obliterated those barbarians yet."
Mutt dismounts about a hundred feet from the edge of the forest, allowing his mount to graze and rest. He beckons for everyone to do the same, then points into the thick woods.
"Figure you could all use a warmup before we go stomping into the great green unknown. Each of you split off and see if you can't catch something." He tosses you each an ultra ball, carved smooth and flawlessly. "Don't go wasting that if you aren't sure you'll catch it. Bonus points if ya catch some Miristani dungmuncher.'
If you're ready to accept the hunt, roll Perception and roll 2d6.

Dumani remained quiet for the rest of the ride, keeping watch for anything that could surprise the group. He caught a few small herds of Furrets poking their heads out of the grass, watching the group before ducking back down. Strange creatures, fairly territorial but friendly if you bring them food. It wasn't like they were gonna stay around long, so they weren't a threat to him.
Eventually the group found themselves at the forest the Gallian's called Darken Forest. Supposedly it was a dangerous place, and they were right... if they were a Gallian. Luckily for Dumani, Forests were his home away from home. It was than that he caught the pokeball, colored yellow with fancy symbol magic all around it. Putting the ball in his sack, he stretched as turned to the group.
"Good idea, Been wanting to hunt for awhile now." He said as he got off Yuna to do some more stretches. After stretching, he reached down to his chest and pulled out a small, flat piece of wood. The wood was etched with small images of vines, wrapping around a monument. He closed his eyes for a moment, praying to Celebi for her blessing. Just as soon as he finished, he opened his eyes and took off in a blaze of speed. His body was low as he darted across the grasslands, before entering into the forest without any sign of difficult. The hunt was on.

Connor nearly bobbles the pokeball as it's tossed at him, but manages to get a grip on it. "Yes sir, of course!" Dismounting and recalling Pyre, he looks to the others. "Good luck gents. Gods know I'll need it..." he mutters the last to himself before moving into the forest. He does release Woolzy before he goes too far, keeping the little lamb close as he looks about for a suitable capture, or a potential Miristani ambush... He clutches the small cylinder he's got in his off-hand, the symbols covering it giving him an ace if it came to combat, and the staff across his shoulders was there if (god's forbid) he ended up in melee combat.

Erias envied Dumani's grace - he startled at the sudden ultra ball as it soared towards him, fumbling with it for a few seconds before nearly dropping the valuable sphere. Fortunately it stopped in midair, held aloft by a nearly-invisible pink aura; Anima had been more attentive than he, it seemed, despite the fact she'd been napping in his saddlebag for hours. His gratitude was expressed silently through their bond, and as Dumani performed his curious ritual (the Wards weren't a particularly devout House), Erias took a moment to focus and strengthen his connection with the Ralts. Anima then vanished, reappearing in a content perch on her partner's shoulder. Asking Beacon to remain with the other Ponyta, Erias slipped into the undergrowth at a steady but much more cautious pace, leaving little trace of his passage. His eyes and senses were open for wild Pokemon - his magic was a boon in dealing with them, but it didn't make him any more immune to their aggression than his fellow Rangers. Dumani's stealth, and perhaps, his prayer, pays off. Slithering through the forest noiselessly, he travels deep, eventually coming up on a clearing with a small herd of Stantler. The air near their horns seem to shimmer as Dumani observes them. While a trio of smaller specimen graze in the grass on the opposite side, the closest, largest one stands vigilant, trying (and failing) to detect any would-be threats. He recognizes them as normal-type pokemon with some hypnotic abilities, though he'd have trouble guessing much else from their appearance.
Erias, after tearing his eyes away from a terrible role-model, likewise travels into the forest. As Connor blunders ahead, Erias picks a more deliberate, careful pace. It pays off. Not too far into the woods, beneath the boughs of a fallen tree, he spots a small, furry tan pokemon with large almond eyes - its an Eevee, and its spotted him, but hasn't moved yet. Apparently holding still has helped it avoid larger predators (and Connor), and its still not sure if Erias has spotted him yet. It doesn't take the channeler's keen senses to tell its tense and ready to bolt.
Connor enjoys a fairly peaceful stroll through the woods for some time. He hears some pokemon cries in the distance, but nothing seems to be close - at least, nothing he can spot. The weather is mild, and a cool breeze occasionally blows through the trees. Following the sound of water not far off the game trail he's on, the gadgeteer and his wooly friend spot a pair of Petilil, the small grass pokemon contentedly milling about at the edge of a stream. They don't seem to care about the presence of the observant human.

Stantler, a whole herd of them. Dumani peered at the herd from the clearing, he had heard about these pokemon before, from Marn's father. Supposedly they were normal-type pokemon, but with special abilities not unlike those with image magic, and could put any foolish hunter to sleep before moving the herd away from danger. If he was hunting for food, he would have been content with picking off one of the small ones before fleeing. But his eyes was on the largest of the pack. Silently he pointed his pokeball down and called out pup. "Pup, get ready." He whispered quietly before moving to a different brush to get a better angle on the large buck. If they could both flank them, this beast was as good as his. Once he got his spot, he proceed to lock an arrow and pull the string, aiming down the sights. [Stealth] CmtnNJpV3d6 + 2

Erias froze when he spotted the small furry Pokemon, studying it for a moment. Giving a mental nudge to Anima to make sure she was aware, he then closed his eyes and reached out with his heart they way he'd practiced countless times. It was much more difficult with strange Pokemon than familiar ones, but he could sense... something. As he struggled to make a connection, Erias focused his thoughts on the task at hand. He and Anima had no wish to hurt the creature. They were on an important mission, with lives of innocent Gallans at stake. They could use a new friend who knew the area to help guide them.
Also, they could offer food. Wild Pokemon seemed to always be hungry, and sometimes that made all the difference.Intuition to Channel the Eevee GsmrMheE3d6+8 3d6+8

Connor looks at the frolicking grass-types for a few moments, before shaking his head. He didn't know enough about them to really get a good feel for them, but he wanted something with a bit more potential bite to it, (or at least something that would be able to get between him and the enemy and stay there indefinitely) and these happy little bouncing sprouts just didn't seem to fit the bill. He taps Woolzy on the tailtip, and the two continue further into the forest. Perception: ZkTiWaLB3d6: 2d63d6·2d6

Dumani's breath catches for just the briefest moment as he brushes past a low limb just a bit. The Stantler turns its head, but its gaze passes the exotic hunter - its on alert, but hasn't spotted the threat yet. His wards wander just a little further as they graze.
Erias has ittle trouble instantly forming a connection with the eevee. Its a young one, and scared, but through the channel knows that Erias means it no harm. Still, its reluctant to linger. For the moment, the standoff continues. The eevee is young, but not hungry and in good health.
Connor doesn't find much as he passes further into the forest. Its been a few minutes now, and the stream he found the petilil is well out of sight now. The canopy is growing thicker and darker. He could continue forging ahead, of course. What could be in these woods that a Ranger need fear?
You can reroll the Perception if you choose to go further in.

"Foolish" he thought to himself, he let his guard down for the briefest moment, and he nearly got spotted. He couldn't wait any long, he needed to strike. But by now he had pinpointed where he was going to strike, the back of the leg. If it tried to run, Lillipup would cut it off and separate it from the herd. With a loud crack, he let go of the string, his arrow darted from the brush to the Stantler! [Bullseye!] NrdZj12b1d20 + 2 VS AC 3

Trying to reassure the Eevee, Erias let thoughts of his bond with Anima bleed through the link. Together, they were more - stronger, safer, happier than they were alone. No wonder the wild Pokemon was wary, frightened - to be alone in such a large and unfriendly world was no easy thing. Erias knew a lot about isolation and loneliness.
He wondered if there was anything he and Anima could do to make the Eevee feel more secure.

Erias gets imagery of warmth, safety, of a pair of leafeon - family? There is little loneliness in the eevee in front of the channeler, just fear which is finally, slowly beginning to wane.
Connor proceeds deeper and deeper into the forest, but he finally finds other wild pokemon that did not flee.

Dumani
The larger Stantler rears up in surprise as the arrow sinks into it's hide, eyes wide. It hesitates for a moment, before charging towards where the arrow came from - right at you. Meanwhile, the rest of the herd has bolted at the sound of the arrow being fired, although one other Stantler remains and is rushing to the aid of it's wounded companion.
The bigger Stantler is roughly two metres away from you, and seems somewhat wounded by the arrow piercing it's side, although not enough to slow it down. The other Stantler is roughly five metres away. Initiative order is small Stantler > big Stantler > Dumani > Pup, so take the actions together.
Connor
You come across a little clearing in the forest, a shallow pond of water on the far side. Almost idyllic, in fact, if not for the two pokemon that seem to have heard or spotted your entrance and are intent on making something of it. The Hawlucha leaps from the rock it was resting on, and comes careening towards you, it's claws seeming to sharpen mid-flight. The Seviper, which had been resting in the pool of water, slithers out of the water at no great speed. It seems content to observe for the moment, but you are unsure if this will last.
Hawlucha uses Hone Claws! It is roughly two metres away, and in the air, a metre or so up. The Seviper does nothing. It is roughly five metres away. Initiative is Hawlucha > Seviper > Connor = Woolzy, so just take them both at once.
