In Celadon - Kaeda
Entering the Gym, Kaeda runs straight into someone unexpected: Gym Trainer Couch Potato!
"Leader's going to be out for the night. To avoid the (in Nalkeya's words) 'obnoxious challengers lining up all day/complaining about my hours', I've been named Stand-In Gym Leader. Yes, that's a real thing. Unfortunately."
The "Stand-In Gym Leader" looks really annoyed that she has been roped into doing this.
In Celadon - Eve and Floyd
Eve and Floyd (who was following her because 'why not?') arrive in Celadon City only a few minutes after Kaeda does. Eve is naturally oblivious, but Floyd happens to spot a familiar head of platinum blonde hair headed into a fancy restaurant.
Back in Fuschia...
After about ten more minutes, the Challenge Master (his official title) announces to everyone that they're headed out now. For newcomers, he does the usual "minimum explanation" shtick, to keep people in the dark and leads the group onwards!
Lia needs to make her three athletics checks to reach Base Camp. DC is the standard 24 for Master Rank.

Kaeda blinks, and slowly nods. "Ummm...Ok." Her counter mind games seemed to have been for nothing. Now she felt semi-exposed in these clothes. Oh well. "I just beat you, and I get the badge. Correct? I'm ready to begin whenever."

Lia's Gym Challenge
The first leg of the journey is fairly effortless, but the staggered pacing for leg #2 throws Lia off a bit. She would probably blame it on being "out of shape" from being on a boat out at sea for the past month. She manages to pick up the pace a bit by leg #3, but flags behind with a few others. She's still at the head of that pack though, so take small comforts as they come. In the end, she makes it to base camp within the "time limit". The sun is high, and the sky is as clear as it's going to get around here. After a few minutes rest, it's time to head out on the path up the mountain.
Choose your path: Well-marked Trail or climb the cliff face to try and get ahead?

Lia feels a bit worn already, guess being on the boat for a long time and not doing much really took it's toll. Guess it's time to slowly ramp up and take it easy at the beginning. Athletics:

Lia makes it easily to the first "marker" on the path, which is a flat, open area. Apparently it's battle time. Question is, who is her opponent? One of those "ice ninja" folks again, or another challenger? Lia finds a young woman sitting on a rock, resting by the side of the "road". Having not quite reached the "challenge blizzard" area yet, visibility is good enough for Lia to spot that the girl has something on her face. Closer inspection reveals it to be a blindfold! Combine that with the light, open-backed clothing that she's wearing, and it seems like she would be ill-prepared for this type of challenge. Especially since she doesn't even have a fire type with her to keep warm! |

Lia scans the area, trying to see if this is some sort of strange ice-ninja trap of some kind. After a moment, apparently not? Lia supposes she's seen stranger things in Kanto, so she's still a little wary. She kinda steps forward carefully, and waves in front of the woman.
"Uhhhh, hi? You look a little cold."

The girl looks up as Lia approaches. "Oh, hello. I was wondering when you'd come over to say hello. I could hear you breathing from all the way over here. Rough time getting up here?" She smiles pleasantly, seeming completely unaffected by the cold.

Lia looks a little surprised by the nice greetings and the fact that she could apparently hear her breathing... outdoors... on this snowy mountain.
Odd.
She steps forward, a little braver now.
"Uh yeah. I blame three weeks on a boat where I couldn't jump off for a fight. Really could only do basic motions and feel a little bit off-base. Trying to get back into the swing of things. I'm Lia, by the way."

Everyone always gets distracted by it, and then they try to be polite by not asking about it, but it keeps on bothering them. Please, ask away. It doesn't bother me, really."

"Last time I tried this challenge there were crazy ice ninjas that attacked me and my girlfriend when we got to about this point so I was just a little wary."

The woman laughs. "Oh, is that all? Well, I was waiting for someone to battle. They're all so slow at trudging up the mountain. The snow isn't even that deep! As for the cold? It's a little brisk, but nothing I'm not used to. I grew up in altitudes higher than this, so this is almost warm."

Regardless of what Floyd does or doesn't do, Eve continues on obliviously to the Celadon Gym. She meets Kaeda on her way out, quite possibly looking very grumpy again.

Floyd decides to discretely glance into the restaurant before heading out to find his own battle, assuming Eve wouldn't be able to challenge a leaderless gym.
