"Hello," Vincent echoes Eric, performing an appropriate bow. The gesture is so common in Johto that Vincent feels a little bit at home in this gym. "As he said, we are well and would like to challenge the gym. I wonder, what exactly does this particular Gym Challenge entail? Is it just battling the Gym Leader or is there something beyond that?" Vincent asked, an expression of curiosity on his face. Vincent was sure that he knew a little of what Gym Challenges can be like, they should be general knowledge, but he didn't know exactly how they were handled in each of the Kanto gyms.

"Ah! Well, we have two levels of Challenge available. There is the 'basic' Challenge, which is a single challenger vs Mo...er.. Leader Nekura in a Single Battle using two Pokemon each. Alternatively, there is the 'Advanced' Challenge, which involves you fighting with your Pokemon in the same type of battle. Whichever one you choose, you must first 'survive' a simulation of the harshness of a desert. This is literally just a giant Sandstorm that will be blowing across the path leading to the Arena. The path is treacherous, and you must be wary if you are to make it through. The path isn't exceptionally long, but it will feel that way if you can't see where you're going." She winks knowingly at the pair.

"Wow," Eric says, concerned about the desert simulation. "Basic for me, please."

"Hmm," Vincent said quietly. I think my Pokemon can beat the Gym Leader's Pokemon, but can we beat the actual Gym Leader? That's a tough question with no immediate answer. And then there's that sandstorm challenge to think about. I kinda of regret getting rid of my running shoes right now. They might have helped with staying steady on the path. "I think... I'll take the Basic Challenge. But are there any advantages or extra rewards for taking the Advanced Challenge? That'll be useful to know for the future." When I think I'm ready to take on Gym Leaders in combat.

"Yes, indeed! You see, the League Champion wants to encourage Trainers to participate in the Advanced Challenges, so she has authorized additional rewards for them. For example: If you win in a Basic Challenge, you just get the Badge, the experience of having fought in a Gym Battle, and anything else the Gym Leader wants to give you. Plus the usual prize money. In an Advanced Challenge, you get all of that in addition to gaining access to more powerful items earlier. And your prize money is doubled. Keep in mind though that some Gyms don't offer a Basic Challenge. Some of the Gym Leaders will only face you if you fight alongside of your Pokemon."

Hmm, that changes things, Vincent thought. If some Gyms don't offer a Basic Challenge, it might be best to try and get a read on what their Advanced Challenge might be like, so I don't get overwhelmed when I go to face them. Even if I do lose, I can always try again the next day with the Basic Challenge. "Alright, I've changed my mind," Vincent said, wondering slightly amused whether he sounded a little flighty. "I'll take the Advanced Challenge. If I lose I can always take the Basic Challenge the next day, right?" Better ask that, just to make sure.

"You may make any Challenge once per day, yes. If you lose in the Advanced Challenge, you may, of course, return the following day for a Basic Challenge. Although you will have to brave the Sandstorm Path every single time. You understand, I'm sure. We can start with whoever is ready first."
(Eric said he would be AFK all day today, so if you choose to start your challenge now, we can begin right away.)

"Alright, I'll go first," Vincent said, glancing at Eric out of the corner of his eye. It might be better for me to test the waters and see how strong the Gym Leader's Pokemon are, before I let Eric who is completely new to this take a stab. His Pokemon should carry him through with no problem especially that Lapras, but it doesn't hurt to be cautious.

Eric nods to Vincent in thanks. "Sure, sure," he says quickly, glad to be going second.

With his business in the gym concluded, Vincent now stood outside the building. He was still riding on the high of having won his first Gym battle, and on the first try no less. A smile was on his lips. He made to find Eric and tell him the good news, only to remember that his newest friend had gone back home to Viridian. The smile slowly faded as Vincent finally realised that he'd been left again. Was being a Trainer really so difficult? Or was it maybe something about me that is so repulsive, he couldn't help but wonder.
Vincent shrugged to himself. It doesn't matter, Vincent told himself. Eric decided the Trainer life wasn't for him and I can't blame him for that. At least he left me with his Cacnea. Oh speaking, or rather, thinking of which, I should meet the guy and give him a name. Some training wouldn't hurt either.
Secretly happy to have a distraction, Vincent reached for the Cacnea's Pokeball and released the Pokemon within into the street. Vel who had been behind Vincent the entire time growled a greeting.
"Hello there, partner. I'm Vincent, your new Trainer. Be ready for regular training sessions and random fights. The first training session will begin shortly, but first of all, we need to give you a name." Vincent paused. "You want a name, right?" The Cacnea hesitated, looking a bit uncertain, before nodding. "Ah good. Then how about I call you... Vex, since you're bound to needle people and Pokemon alike," Vincent said, smiling. Vex gave a big toothy grin and nodded, he liked the sound of that.
"Alright then it's settled. Let's run you through some basic exercises. We can spar a little later, the middle of the city isn't really a nice spot for sparring." With that, Vincent began training his newest Pokemon. It was a good distraction while it lasted but once he was done, he went back to brooding. Eventually he snapped out of it, and decided to focus on what was important, the present. What should I do now, he wondered. Should I try and catch some more Pokemon? Or maybe start the trek to the next city. Unable to reach a decision, Vincent simply stood there near the Gym.

It took some time for Lia to make it this far. Having to trek most of the way from her former stomping grounds in Johto to Pallet Town. She figured she was in for quite a dull start when the half-awake Blue just popped in a movie like some two-bit sub in school. That is... until she saw exactly what they were being shown. Although the others (Who all were in their own groups of friends who she ditched as they were more interested in scouring the first route for some starter pokemon and training) were half-paying attention, Lia's eyes were practically sparkling. A girl who wanted to have trainer and pokemon fight together? Lia already 'wanted' that! And after that whole thing, she wanted nothing more than to knock Lilith off of her pretty little throne. She practically ran out of Pallet, and through Viridian, to get to Pewter and the first Gym. There'd be time for more pokemon and such later. She was itchin for a fight! As she approached the Gym, she finally let Scier out of her pokeball. The Chingling was released, immediately chiming quite loudly about being in the ball for so long. Lia gave a sheepish smile to her starter. "Hey look Scier, I know you don't like it in there for long. And your my lady, you know that."The pokemon jingles in response. "But let's face it, you ain't fast. I ran here like a Zubat out of Giratina's realm! Your feet don't even work to make you faster. You just float forward."The little pokemon fumes a bit, determined to show her master otherwise. She levitates forward, using her little legs to kick forward, as fast as she can. But to no avail. Lia starts giving a snorting laughter at her pokemon. She quickly wraps the little bell in a big hug. "Scier, promise me you'll never change, ok?"The little pokemon, despite being laughed at, knows Lia well enough to know the true intent behind her actions. Her trainer never would show any ill toward her. She finally accepts the big hug, showing a smile. This moment doesn't last, as Lia shakes Scier a bit to get her attention. "Hey, look. You see what I see?"The Chingling looked forward, seeing a young man in dark clothing exit the gym, with a bunch of pokeballs on his belt. He looked about as tough as Lia did, although maybe trade punch-ready with jump-ready. And there was a 'hint' of accomplishment to be seen. "I think we found someone who knows what they are doing. Back me up here."Lia lets go of Scier to float next to her, and heads over to the man, giving him a casual tap on his arm. If he looks, he'd see a red-haired young woman, just a bit under his height, wearing a nearly-loose fitting button up shirt and black pants looking at him. [Lich Note: Profile picture probably does a better job than I can ] If he was perceptive, he'd notice the muscle hidden under the clothing. "So, you ain't crying like a hatchling heading out of the gym, there. So I'd take a wild guess and assume you did well? You got any tips for a nice lady like me, eh?"Somewhere along the way, we'll say Lia has applied her first days worth of Training features (Focused Training on her two pokemon, as well as Athlete Training on herself [Speed/Attack])

Vincent was brought out of his ruminations when a person approached him. He might have been thinking, but he wasn't stuck in his thoughts enough not to notice someone walk up to him before tapping him on his arm.
It was a red-haired young woman, dressed a little smarter than him, with his black Trainer clothing. For a nice lady huh, Vincent couldn't help but parrot mentally. Well, I suppose it won't hurt.
Vincent nodded. "Yes, I got my badge," he started. "If you're taking on this gym you'll want to know that there's a Basic and an Advanced Challenge. The Basic Challenge is Pokemon only while the Advanced Challenge includes the Trainers." Vincent gave the young woman a quick look, noting that she looked like she could handle herself in a fight. He continued. "Your biggest problem is probably going to be Sandstorm. The Gym Leader can trigger one just as well as any of her Pokemon, so you're sure to get hit by it. The Gym Leader will also field at least one tough Pokemon with strong defenses so physical attacks have less of an effect. One way of going about the Advanced Challenge could be to take out the softer targets before the harder targets." I don't want to give everything away, this is meant to be a challenge after all, so I'll leave it at that. I also left out the part where I attacked the Pokemon first and paid for it, but that's not something she needs to know, right?
"Good luck with your challenge," Vincent said, the barest hint of a smile on his face.

"So it 'is' true then? That all the new Gym Leaders here gotta put up a fight if asked?"
Lia cracks her knuckles in anticipation.
"Sandstorm is news though. Not a fan of sand but I'll deal."
She heads past him, giving him a couple of hard slaps on the shoulder.
"See? I knew ya could be helpful."
Lia makes it to the door, before turning back.
"For formalities sake, name's Lia. Lia Regal."

Vincent, you are free to do what you will while Lia attempts her Gym Challenge. Lia, please refer to your new individual Trainer Battles thread. This is where all Trainer Battles and Gym Challenges will take place (excepting random ambushes while Wild Hunting).

Vincent, having been drawn out of his thought by the young woman made a snap decision and decided he should hang around town a little longer. It definitely wasn't for the chance to see if that girl made it through the challenge or not. At least, that's what Vincent told himself.
Eager to leave potentially embarrassing thoughts behind, Vincent did some shopping and then walked out into Route 2 again. He was thinking of catching some more Pokemon there, but he also wanted to see if he couldn't find any items left behind by someone. After that he could either check out Route 3 and look for items and try to catch some Pokemon there. Or he could just go back into the city and spend the rest of the day in the Pokemon Center. Or perhaps he could look for a Trainer or two to battle, he hadn't done that in any city yet. Remembering how woefully unprepared he'd been for that battle in the Forest, Vincent made a note to try and get more practice battling Trainers. Maybe he should do all three of the above things, although perhaps not in that order.
Eager to get started, Vincent left for Route 2. (Does it matter that he already searched there once? I can't remember whether you said something about that.)

(For items, it matters. You can only use that ability once per route. For Pokemon, it doesn't matter how often/where you search.)

After getting both of her pokemon healed, Lia heads back outside and re-releases Scier. "Feelin better? Well good cause we ain't done yet. What we need to do, is actually get acclimated to Kanto more. We've spent what, like two days here? Obviously things are a little different from the chumps we used to beat back in Johto. Although... part of that was your main lady here was involved in as much of the fighting as you, which I didn't. Get. To. Do. Yet. Sadly."She starts marching off toward Route 3. "So we are off to this path over here toward the mountain. Not going in the mountain itself, that's a fools errand right now. But I think we may find some new buddies to join ya if we look real hard."I don't have a wild encounter thread yet so I'll post interest here and let you go ahead and set that up instead of setting it up myself (Which would seem a little rude to take over gm-related tasks.)

Having acquired another Pokemon but not having found any items, Vincent debated searching for more on this route, keeping in mind that the number of wild Pokemon seemed to decrease after catching around two of them and decided to going to the next Route. Since he passed through town to get to Route 3, he made a quick stop at the Pokemon Center, where he healed got his new Buneary healed. Now he had an issue and that issue was having too many Pokemon. Ever since he got Vex the Cacnea, he'd been sitting on seven owned Pokemon and he'd just kept the extra in his backpack. He wasn't sure that was entirely legal and so although he hated it, he finally called up his Ranch. He'd made an agreement with his father to let any Pokemon that he caught roam around in an area of the forest and fields around the Roth mansion. They would also be taken care of by a professional Pokemon Care expert. They should receive the freedom of living in the wild and the luxury of being taken care of all at one. The best of both worlds so to say. Since making the area a Ranch basically meant giving it up to the government, Vincent was expected to buy full ownership of it eventually on his journey. It was a good deal, Vincent just hated the idea of depending on his family for anything. He was planning on moving his Ranch to a new location in Kanto eventually. It would be the building blocks of an official gym. That would wait until he was done with the Elite Four and the Champion though. Being done with his call, in which he let the Pokemon Care professional know to be ready to receive Pokemon, Vincent decided to send back the Rotom, Fara and the Buneary which was yet unnamed. A few button presses on his Pokedex and he was done. With that business finished, Vincent headed out towards Route 3, wondering what kind of Pokemon he would meet next. As Lia makes the attempt to head back into Pewter, she spots a familiar face.
"Oh hey! Look who it is!"
She walks over, giving Vincent a (Kind-of) hard slap on the back to get his attention.
"Sup, hood?"
Scier floats around from the side of her master, and gives a wave to Vincent.
