"Hello Dan-" He said to his friend, then turned to Eric, nodding, "Yes, we're friends," and then turned back to Dan. "How have you been? It took me a while and a bunch of things have happened in between, but yes, I finally made it to Pewter. Actually, I mostly just wanted to get past Viridian Forest and overdid it a little. I'm thinking of going back to Route 2 to catch some Pokemon, training up a little more and then finally tackling the Gym. Have you tried your luck there yet?" Actually is that why he looked so down? From what I remember the Pewter Gym specializes in Rock-types. Bug-types probably don't have much of a chance there. I will have to remember to try and avoid using Sia.

"Yeah. I did try. Despite it being a Ground-Type Gym now, my bugs barely stood a chance. That Sandstorm, man... You think it isn't going to do much, but when you can't breach the enemy's defenses, it adds up pretty quickly. If/When you challenge the Gym... good luck. You're gonna need it."

"Thanks, Dan, for telling us this. I'll try and be prepared for that Sandstorm. Well, I'm going to head back to Route 2 now, it was nice seeing you again!" Luckily, Vel isn't going to be affected by Sandstorm and neither will Jax be once he transforms. The only ones in danger are Sia and Cal. It's a good thing I can use Sia, she should be able to tank the Gym Leader's Pokemon's hits like no one else on my team can.
With that Vincent nodded friendly at Dan and then went on his way. He turned to Eric, "Sorry, I got a little overeager and skipped catching Pokemon on Route 2. As a new Trainer, you should definitely get some experience doing that. I think you're going to like catching Pokemon, if your tendency towards trading is anything to go by."
He began walking back towards Route 2. Once he was there, he looked for a Pokemon to battle and catch.

Before leaving, Eric spoke to Dan.
"Dan. You wouldn't happen to be Bugcatcher Dan, would you? I have a note in my Pokédex that you'd be interested in trading for a Beautifly. I have inherited a Silcoon from its former owner. Are you still interested if it evolves?"
After leaving, Eric replies to Vincent.
"Indeed. I'm looking forward to it."
He searches nearby for an encounter of his own.

"Huh? You got the same Silcoon? How'd you swing that? And speaking of, where is the masked fellow? Jax, I think his name was?"
Dan seems thoroughly confused.

"There isn't really a non-weird way to say this, but Jax was a Ditto in disguise, hence the mask. He's now a member of my team. His Pokemon were transferred to a fellow named Peppers, who originally owned the stuff Jax had, but Peppers left for Kalos and gave Eric his stuff."

"You're right. There was no non-weird way to say that. I don't even know who this 'Peppers' guy is, but I guess he couldn't cut it as a Trainer here if he ran off already. Which reminds me, where'd your other friend go? The girl? She leave too?"

"Yes, she sent me a message before she left. It seems the Trainer life wasn't her thing in the end, she wanted to become famous in another way."

"Huh. Well, alrighty then. To each their own, and all that. I'll be seeing you guys around. I'm planning on taking my Pokemon out to Mt. Moon to train. Maybe we'll bump into each other again sometime."
With that, Dan waves goodbye and walks out the door.

"I have captured a Snubbull, friend Vincent!" Eric proudly announces when he reunites with his pal. "Shall we look again?"

"And I caught a Rotom," Vincent said smiling a little at Eric's obvious pride. "Yes, let's look for more Pokemon."
Vincent looked for another Pokemon in the area.

And Eric does as well, though he stays within earshot of Vincent.

As you both continue to search for and capture more Pokemon, you notice that they seem to be thinning out. Whether going into hiding or merely being captured by other trainers who pass through, it seems there are far fewer of even the most common species. Perhaps it's time to move on?

"This time I captured a Starly, Vincent! It took a while to find it, though. It's like the population in this area is growing thin. Should we look for more or head to Pewter now?"

Satisfied with his catch of a new Dark-type, Vincent picked up the Pokeball he had missed the Purrloin with and made to meet up with Eric again.
Vincent almost wanted to say 'Good job', or 'nicely done', but he didn't to be patronizing, so all he said was, "Nice." He then continued, "I caught a Purrloin, but a flying-type should be a great help, especially since they're immune to the Ground-type Moves that the Gym is sure to use. Yes, I noticed Pokemon were looking sparse, let's head to Pewter now. We should heal up, then I want to get in a little more training with my Pokemon. After that we should try challenging the Gym."
With that, Vincent headed off, intending to get to the Pokemon Center. Once his Pokemon were healed up, he would spend half an hour training Vel, Sia, Cal and Jax, and a whole hour (so an hour with all Pokemon) training his new Pokemon, Day, short for Faraday, and Ker, short for Ryker. (All of Vincent's Pokemon become Brutal and Focused).
After he was done with that, he stood in front of the Gym, having sent Eric a message via his Pokedex that he was waiting for him there.

Eric gets his team all healed up and then he crafts some Pester Balls - 4 Confusion, 2 Burn, and 2 Poison - and then he gets Vincent's message and hurries to meet him at the Gym's front entrance.

"All ready? Then let's go in," Vincent said. He was feeling quite confident that he could beat the Gym Leader, it was only the first after all, but despite all his confidence, he was nervous. He'd never even been inside a Gym before, let alone challenged its Leader.
Despite the awkward feeling in his stomach, he marched forward and entered the Gym.

And Eric marches right alongside, too ignorant to the world of Gym battles to be nervous yet.

As you enter the Gym, you are greeted by one of the Gym Trainers. The young woman looks to be not much older than the two of you, but her hair is pure white, in contrast to her moderately dark skin. "Hello, and welcome to Pewter Gym! How are you both today?" She smiles, bowing in greeting. The Gym itself seems like an ordinary arena, though it is much more... colorful... than you would have imagined. There are banners in purple and black bearing a strange symbol, which you assume must either be representative of the Desert Badge or of the Clan who now runs the Gym.

"Hello, honored Gym Trainer," Eric replies, bowing in return. "We are well, thank you. We have come to challenge the Gym in the hopes of obtaining Desert Badges."
