Since it looks like everyone's cool with moving to the next day...
When he gets back to the Pokémon Center after the tournament, Jax goes ahead and updates his note on the notice board to feature tomorrow's date and changes the Pokémon available for trade to a Silcoon, a Cacnea, and the Mankey. His phone number is still there and the plan to spend the day in Viridian Forest and arrive in Pewter by nightfall is still accurate, as far as he knows, so he doesn't change anything about that. Then he goes to get some sleep.
The next morning, all he has to do is spend a little training time with his team and then he's done with personal tasks, ready to head out as soon as his friends are, provided no one has seen his note and is looking to trade right away.

With the Viridian Tournament now behind them, and all prizes/desired phone numbers collected, the trio of not-so-rookie trainers are finally able to get started on their journey through the Forest towards Pewter. Waking early so they can get any last-minute shopping/training in before they hit the road, the group is ready and on their way into the forest by 10 AM. Barring any significant delays, the party should be able to reach Pewter City a little after nightfall (around 8-9PM).
What will the party do?

Vincent got back to the Pokemon Center feeling excited. He had just received a new Pokemon, and a Dark-type of all things. It was in a word, perfect. He couldn't wait to bring the Zorua out and meet her (his Pokedex told him the Zorua was female) properly. As he walked into the Center, he noticed Jax' notice on the board and his eyes lit up at the mention of a Cacnea. When did Jax get one of those? he wondered. Vincent didn't know much about them, but he knew they evolved into a Dark-type Pokemon. He'd have to tell Jax he was interested in it in the morning. Too bad he didn't really have any Pokemon to offer.
As soon as he reached his room, he released his new Pokemon onto the floor. The Zorua looked around in a little confusion. Vincent had to smile. She was pretty cute. "Hello there," Vincent started. He thought for a moment. "Calypso." He decided he liked the sound of that name. "You're Calypso, Cal for short and you're my new partner," Vincent said still smiling. The Zorua looked at him a little shyly, but nodded in acquiescence to the name. Her eyes briefly closed, before her form morphed and a copy of Vincent was standing before him, sharp eyes and smile and all. "Yip!" she said. Vincent had to grin. That sounded ridiculous coming from his image. But oh boy, she was going to be so useful.
He released the rest of his team in order for them to bond a little. Only half an hour later, Machiavelli seemed to have taken Calypso under his wing, determined to teach her about the world and especially about fighting. Vincent supposed that Calypso's sparring partner for training was already set in stone. Hortensia's reaction to Calypso was interesting. Vincent had expected her to remain aloof, but she was actually very motherly towards the little fox Pokemon. Perhaps it was just a female thing. Calypso had learnt how to take Hortensia's form as a result, so Vincent wasn't complaining. It would encourage opponents not to use Fighting-type moves against her.
Vincent left his Pokemon out for the night and went to sleep.
The next morning, he got up early, went out to train with his Pokemon and did a little bit of shopping. He also managed to get rid of a pair of running shoes that he had invested in for his journey, but which had turned out to be largely useless. Perhaps later he would get another pair if he needed them.
After finishing up his business he went to meet up with the rest of his party. "Hello Jax. I noticed you're offering a Cacnea for trading. Any chance I could convince you to wait on trading until I find a suitable Pokemon to trade? I know you won't get a new Pokedex entry that way, but I'm quite interested in getting a Cacnea. I'll understand if you'd rather trade with someone else," he said to his companion. He waited for a response, then continued, "So, are you still going to look for that Beedrill? I think I've lost interest in acquiring a Scyther to be honest, but in the interest of gaining more Pokedex entries, I'd be open to doing some wild hunting too."

"Is that right?" Jax asks. "Well, if you're interested in the Cacnea, Mr. Roth, of course you'll have priority. Don't worry about finding something amazing. I'll trade it to you for the next thing that you catch and don't want to keep. Let me just go scratch him off the list. Hey, that may even make the list look more desireable. 'Look, this guy is making trades. He's already traded a Wurmple, an Oddish, and a Cacnea. They must be quality. We better get in on this before his last two are gone.' That kind of thing, maybe. Hang on, I'll be right back."
Jax runs back to the Poké Center and scratches Cacnea off the list.
When he returns, "I had a thought last night. Before we head straight for the forest, there are three Routes around us that none of us have explored. I once heard that Trainers drop things all the time. We should spend some time this morning checking out Route 01, Route 22, and then Route 02 before we officially enter the forest, after which, oh, yes, I am interested in that Beedrill, and as many other wilds as we can find in there."

Seems a slow day today. JoJo is only able to sell one Adorable or Elegant Fashion.

"Let's grab Miss Joyce now that she is packing up her wares and see if she would like to search the surrounding Routes for lost treasures."

Vincent smiled in anticipation of receiving another Pokemon he wanted. "Thanks Jax, I appreciate it." When Jax returned and suggested exploring the Routes, Vincent nodded. "I'm fine with combing the Routes for lost things before we head into the Forest. We have plenty of time, but yes, let's see if JoJo agrees."

JoJo spotted her travelling companions chatting in a corner just opposite of her own. "Yeah, that sounds good, I'm not in any rush"

"Wonderful," Jax says. "Then we all agree on a course of action. But I guess that's not enough. I guess we need to physically move ourselves that way. So come on, companions, let us head south to Route 01."
Jax heads for Route 01 now.

Vincent nods and follows Jax on his way to Route 01.
Vincent finished scouring Route 1 for items, but he found nothing at all. Maybe Lady Luck wasn't shining upon him today. He resolved to try again however, and moved onto Route 22, once again looking for discarded items. Again, he found nothing.
Finally, he moved on to Route 02, again looking for items that Trainers had left behind. And once again, he found nothing. He would be lying if he said he wasn't at least a little frustrated. He hadn't come to the Routes expecting to find a treasure hoard, but something at least would have been nice, even if it was something he'd never use, like an X-Defense. Vincent sighed and shrugged. Now he had to wait for the others to catch up. Maybe fate was punishing him for running ahead of them.

While on Route 1, the group encounters a Wild Meowth that seems to take issue with Jax. It growls and hisses at him before leaping at his masked face and swiping furiously at it. It refuses to be pulled off, digging its claws in when anyone tries. It continues raking his mask with its back claws.

Vincent sees the assault on Jax' mask and decided to intervene before he got hurt. He called out Calypso. "Cal, transform into Jax," he ordered her gently. She promptly created an illusion of the teen complete with mask and all in order to distract the cat and maybe goad it into battle. (Jax replaces Vincent as one of Cal's Illusion targets)
"You seem to have a problem with Jax' mask, Meowth, why don't you take it out on a target that can fight back?" Vincent said, tone of voice taunting and a small mocking smile on his face.

"Goad it, Cal," Vincent whispered to his new partner, who spread the arms of her illusionary disguise wide and made 'come get me' motions with the right hand. 4d6

The Meowth does not relent in its assault. Likely it can tell that Calypso isn't the real Jax by smell.

One of the Meowth's well-aimed swipes manages to unlock one of the clasps on the mask's right side, knocking the mask away. Rather than continue its assault on Jax, the Meowth chases the mask, leaving Jax to lay dizzied on the ground. His face is finally revealed, and it is a confusing sight, indeed.

Vincent stares utterly speechless as Jax' face is revealed, all thoughts of the Meowth gone from his head (although he'd still quite like to catch it). What, is that?! He looks like... like a Ditto! Oh Arceus, has Jax been murdered in his sleep long ago, and the person that has been travelling with JoJo and I was really a Ditto in disguise?!
Vincent's eyes widen comically. Or wait! Vincent thought. Maybe Jax had been maimed one day and it took the implantation of Ditto cells to heal his face? That would explain the lack of a nose. Now... how to ask politely.
"Ah, so Jax. This is the first time I'm seeing your face and it's rather... unique. Can I ask what happened to make it so... different?" Maybe that's simply another mask and I was getting worried about nothing.

Jax stands up and rubs the back of his head, obviously embarrassed. The Meowth keeps the mask in its mouth and runs past everyone in the direction of Pallet. It stops at the feet of a man standing in the distance, a man dressed in what looks like a chef's outfit. He pats the Meowth on the head and then pulls out a Poké Ball, recalling the Meowth into it. Looks like the Meowth belongs to him.
"Well!" the man calls out as he approaches. "Thanks to the work of my Meowth, it would seem that you have been found out, ... Ditto! What name were you going by this time?"
Jax, the boy with the face of a Ditto, looks down and kicks at the dirt. "Jax," he says.
"Weeks, now, we've been tailing you," the chef says. He's a stout fellow with a big beard. "And who are these two? Did you actually make friends with some people?"
"Yeah," Jax says, still looking at the ground with his hands in his pockets.
"This mask belongs to me," the man says, "as does everything else you stole from me - my money, my Poké Balls, my Pokédex, all of it."
"I know," Jax says. "I'm sorry." He looks up at Vincent and JoJo. "I'm sorry," he says again, though obviously referring to the deception he has put them through.
"Why the mask, though?" the man asks Jax. "And why this one? I had many others in the collection on my wall."
"I took it because I needed one," says Jax. "I can mimic one," he says, and his face morphs into an exact copy of the mask, though this time its mouth moves when he speaks, "but I can only hold it for about ten minutes before it shifts back to my Ditto face. I needed to hide it and I just liked the way that one looked the most."
"You are a wild Pokémon!" the man says, sternly, pointing a finger at Jax. "You need to accept that and start acting like it. No more masquerading as a human. You were run out of Kalos for this kind of thing and it will happen again here in Kanto if you do not stop!"
"I know. I'm sorry. I won't do it any more. This time I got to see what it was like to be a Trainer. I even captured and trained several of my fellow Pokémon."
"Oh, Ditto, that is just wrong. What am I going to do with those Pokémon now?"
"I don't know. I'm sorry. You can do whatever you think is right. I got to experience a Trainer's adventure. Now I can return to being a Pokémon with joy in my heart. Mr. Roth, Miss Joyce," he says, "thank you for an adventure that I will never forget. Goodbye, everyone."
And, with that, Jax reverts to his true form - that of a Ditto.
"Dit!" he cries.
"My, oh, my," says the man in the chef's outfit, beginning to collect his many belongings from around the Ditto. "What a mess he's made. What sort of trouble did that little Pokémon cause you nice kids?"

Vincent was silent to begin with. He struggled to process what just happened. So... So Jax really was a Ditto. Huuuh. If he was completely honest with himself, this wasn't too strange. Calypso could change forms too after all. In reality, what Vincent was feeling now wasn't shock anymore, it was... sadness. Not sadness about having been deceived, no, Vincent was actually quite impressed Jax had managed to fool him and JoJo so thoroughly. He was sad to see his friend having to go. Did this mean their adventure was over? Vincent wondered.
"No trouble at all, sir," he answered the man in the chef's outfit absentmindedly as he looked at the Ditto surrounded by the man's apparent belongings. "You were great, Jax- Ditto," Vincent said solemnly. Then he got an idea. "How about- how about you join us as my Pokemon? I already have one that can transform, another wouldn't be out of place. I will understand if you would rather live as a wild Pokemon again though," Vincent said. Calypso, realising she was being spoken about made the illusion of Jax - and wasn't that funny, a disguise of a disguise - wave its hands. He may not be a Dark-type, but I can make an exception for a friend.
