Kat nodded at Cecil's advice. "If you've got no other reliable way to defend yourself--or even if you do--keepin' a knife close can make all the difference. My place's open for you lot to crash for a few nights, or at least 'til you figure out where you're headed next."
She'd ignore the voice telling her to go with them--for now. Bunnie was a bright flame amongst their flickering coals, and she found the chickie far more likable than she wanted to admit, but she felt leagues away from gaining the others' trust. She leaned back against the wall, running her hands through the multi-colored strands in her hair.
They were a good laugh, if not odd. (You're one to speak.) She had her suspicions. She'd keep those quiet. It was nice to have people to talk to for once who didn't look at her with pity. Real nice, in fact.
One part of her wondered whether she could leave Purewater, if push came to shove. Three other parts of her weren't sure they had an answer for that yet.
Too much thinking. (How's that feel?)
She began humming a quiet funeral march.

Bunnie considers the dizzying arrays of items, the enthusiastically enthralled Amber, and the smiling Billy, and then at the skulking Joe. "You know, I think I'll let you all choose what we need, you've got a much better head for these things than I do. And it seems that I may have found an admirer of my work!" She giggles a bit, before looking at Joe. "Mr. Vargas, if you'd be so kind as to escort me?" She dimples prettily at him, and Joe, after a long moment of hesitation, agrees. "We'll meet you all back at that tavern in an hour or two. Taa!" And with that she whisks away.
In the meantime, Billy begins to enthusiastically explain all the different types of berries and potions that they carry. If any of Christine's questions are odd, he doesn't show it, either not noticing or too caught up in making what looks like a big sale.
[Please provide a list of items purchased]
Mahoney is a surprisingly patient teacher, seeming to enjoy Amber's combination of enthusiasm and insight, smiling proudly whenever she grasps a particularly difficult concept.

Cecil took his time to pick through the store. There were plenty of things they needed, and not really a whole hell of a lot of predictability in their future. Caps jangled softly in his pocket, and more than once Kat likely caught his eye wandering to her. It never lingered for long, and his expression was passive as always. Food and weapons really concerned him the most outright, but he managed to find an outfit that he liked. Looked to be military surplus, darkly colored and a bit heavy duty, with a few pockets along the legs and chest.
No reason to really hold back, better to have something and not need it, then need it and not have it right? In the end, Cecil bought:
Stealth Clothes (Military Surplus Night Camo) 2,000 Caps. Night-Vision Goggles 1,000 Caps. Pokeball x3 750 Caps. Super Soda Pop x2 250 Caps. Purified Food x5 1,000 Caps. Pokerus Purgative x2 600 Caps. Oddish Offshoots x1 400 Caps. Total: 6,000 Caps.

Hmmm... This wasn't something she'd ever really had to do before. Sure, fill out requisition forms when medical supplies ran low, but, well, she wasn't usually the one to do the shopping. And if she did, there was always a precise list of what she needed to get. Nothing more, nothing less. Freedom to choose was...disconcerting, to say the least. "Ah okay..." Hmm... learning those berries would be good, as would be buying some of that "Purgative" stuff for each of us. always best to be cautious. Some safe food, too. Just in case. It is safe, right? And...a tent? That was...it sounded familiar. From one of the books. Ah, ah... Oh. From that uh... camping story. Where they all got spooked by...a...ghost... Stop thinking like that, Christine, it's shelter. Okay, that'll be good. It's something over your head. In between you and all that infinite emptiness... SHUT UP!In the end, she orders: -Cheri Berry, Chesto Berry, Pecha Berry, Rawst Berry, Aspear Berry, Oran Berry, Persim Berry (7 x 150 = 1050) -10 purgative (300 x 10 = 3000) -10 Meals (200 x 10 = 2000) -2 person tent (1800) -As much Medical Scrap as possible (up to 3000) She'll let Amber pick out all the technowhatzits, Pokéballs, etc.

Amber finally wanders back after her lessons, dazed with all the information she'd just gotten. She'd have to experiment with the shards. It would take a while, probably, a few tests, but...she could totally figure out how to make those...He'd given her enough of the basics! She returns to Christine and mutters to herself as she checks over what the other girl had collected. Somewhere between 7150 and 4150, then, depending on how much medical scrap the other girl wanted...probably best to assume the max.
She hums to herself and tosses a few things into the cart. "Okay to go?" She checks with the others.
In the basket: 4 Basic Balls (4*250 = 1000) - Leaving 3150 3 Great Balls (3*400 = 1200) - Leaving 1950 Remainder in Technology Scrap (1950) for later

Pockets free of caps again, new acquisitions stowed in a bundle under his arm, Cecil made his way to Kat. The hell do you even broach something like this? Eh. Guess a bit of honesty couldn't hurt. Better she knows why.
"Yo, Kat, Got something to say." Damn her hair is loud. "Look, you're one of the first people we bumped into here in town. Seem to have a good head on your shoulders, offering to help us out." When I poked around nobody warned you'd shank us. Cecil rolled his eyes off to one side as if directly addressing some thought or distraction. "I feel like having someone a bit more wastes savvy with us would do the girls some good. Can't really offer much in the moment, maybe a smoke and some company, but offer's there."
Yeah that was it. It wasn't like having someone actually agree with him on something was more pleasant then Christine's nagging, Amber's fawning, Bunnie's flirting, or Joe's ineptitude. Hands slipped into his pockets, and Cecil leaned against one of the supporting posts for the building, laid back about the exchange.

Damn. Push was shoving already, it seemed.
She ran her tongue along on her bottom lip, half-nervous and half-intrigued by the prospect. The mention of 'good head' caused her to stifle a giggle (oh, you like this one) but she held it together, narrowing her eyes at Cecil out of curiosity. Funny that he should be the one to speak up, after disappearing around town for a bit. Who'd he speak to, she wondered.
Finally, she popped her lips and gave him a grin, leaning in close so only he and those closest in the vicinity could hear. "Okay, I'll bite. Someone's said something bout 'poor little Thatch' and here y'are to skirt me away from all the pitying eyes and damn irritating whispers. But that ain't your style, izzit?" She inhaled the traces of smoke that clung to him like a second skin. This was a risk. She stepped back, acid eyes burning with excitement. "Not a bad promotion from 'Purewater Tour Guide', though, I s'pose. Your birds are cute--" she glanced at Christine. "--mostly, and they'll need all the protection they can get. But don't think for a flash you can use me then dump me at the next stop. I've already got one bitch I gotta hunt down on that account."
Her smile was dazzling in all the worrying ways as she held out a hand for him to shake. "I look forward to gettin' to know you better, Mister DeLoria."

Kat's sharp. Might do to give a bit more. Cecil's handshake was firm, but the dark-haired boy's expression was somber, far too serious given the overall upbeat mood in the moment. "You're half right. I did some asking, just to see if you were the sort that could be trusted. Skinny was that you got out of a hard spot, and came out of it different." Keeping his voice low, Cecil paused for a moment, picking his next words carefully.
"We're in that spot now. Clueless, naive, easily taken advantage of." Cecil accepted the handshake as it was offered, rolling one of his precious two remaining pre-war cigarettes between Kat's pinkie and ring finger as they parted again. "I'm looking forward to this 'working' relationship Kat. I gotta start trusting somebody real quick, and those chicks are more like to listening to a stranger then me."

She didn't doubt for a second what that was between her fingers, and when she drew away thrust it deep into her jacket pocket, pushing it into the small tear in the fabric that served as a secure hiding spot when she found something worth the effort. A cig? It was the most beloved thing she'd seen all month. Her throat dried out as she fantasized about when she might find the time and place for a good light. "I'll work for that trust," she grated out--perhaps the most straightforward claim she'd made all day. A rare moment of clarity before she turned to Cecil's precious girls.
"Spend too long with those machines and you'll find yourself sparkin, Goldilocks," she called out affectionately towards Amber. "The rest of you set to head out? The day ain't young, and if there's anything else you wanna do, best get it done before the city gates close at dusk. I ain't seen even the trickiest of ghosts make it past those guards after the sun goes down."

Amber glances at Kat, vague surprise crossing her features at being addressed. "What? Oh, um...that's...not how that works.." She mumbles, shaking her head. She tilts her head at the rest of the girl's comment, having missed Cecil's invitation to the other girl. "Oh, are you coming too?"
She glances at Christine, about to make a comment--before she pauses, glancing back at Kat. "...did you say ghosts?" She frowns, lifting her wrist to fiddle with her dex. She types something in, and the dex flickers before reading out, "No Genetic Profiles Found". She raises her head and starts to say something else when the dex unexpectedly continues, "'Ghost' types are categorized as such due to their abilities to manipulate and phase through dead matter due to their quantum boundaries being "looser" than those of other more corporeal species of pokemon created. Orighnuag byvv [error: further files corrupted]-"
Well. That's annoying. Perhaps finding some generic profiles would fix those files or...? But if ghosts are real...Amber stares into space as this new world changing bit of information is placed in her head, and she makes the mental connections related to it.
"How do your gates prevent the phasing?" She finally asks, staring at Kat with startling intensity as a new puzzle presents itself. "Perhaps...does live electricity conduct through a phased being regardless? Live wires they can't pass through? Or...?"

Kat chewed her lower lip thoughtfully. "In places, sorta. I ain't no techy like yourself, but as far as I can recall it's half that and half the guards havin' the right pokemon to take 'em down, y'know? I'm guessing you lot haven't had yours for too long, but most of them could probably hit a ghost fair easy. And if not, mine can. Don't sweat it."
She waits for a few more minutes until everyone looks like they're good and done purchasing from Mahoney, then speaks up again as she leads them back outside. "We should hit the Big Drip before it crowds up. And speakin' of drips, looks like we'll finally be gettin' some tonight." She's pleased as she looks at the clouds rolling in. "Good thing. Feels unnatural without it. Well, let's be off."

As Kat leads the three of you through the town, closer towards the settlement's center, you all can see that the sky, which had been a bright blue, is darkening, thick dark-gray clouds gathering and lumping together into massive thunderheads, which begin to lay shadows down over the settlement. You all also notice that foot traffic is lightening considerably, with many of the windows you're passing that had been open being drawn shut, or metal devices being put up to shield them. The people you do still see out appear to be grumbling resignedly and moving much more quickly about their business, with one or two drawing out odd plastic garments that they drape over themselves (rain ponchos). As you come in sight of a building with a cobbled together sign declaring it the "Big Drip, over top of a massive faux water facet, there's a rumbling KATHOOOM from above. Water begins sheeting down, drawing down upon the settlement like a curtain, sweeping towards your position as the few remaining people scramble to get inside. It's only thanks to Kat moving you along that you get into the Big Drip with no more than a brief soaking. The interior is cozily lit with electrical lights that dim and brighten in time to the intermittent gusts of wind outside slamming the rain harder against the metal and rock shell of the building. There's a large number of people here, and you spot the female gate guard from earlier sitting at a bar, ordering from a thin wiry man with heavily repaired spectacles. She's scanning the tavern entrance as you walk in, and she perks up slightly when she sees you all, before her brow knits and she turns her attention back to the little man, holding up three fingers. To one side of the room is a small collection of pool tables that appear to have been heavily repaired or in one case cobbled together from two (or more) tables that had been completely broken down. There's also a collection of chairs and couches. A sharply-dressed man with asian features is seated on one of the larger couches, speaking to a couple of men dressed in guard uniforms, a knowing leer on his face as two attractive women in rather revealing short dresses press up against either side of him. The guards look annoyed, but resigned, as one pulls out a small bag and offers it to the suited man. The other side of the room has a number of tables set up around an ancient jukebox that still works, blasting out a variety of music that none of the vault dwellers have heard before, though to Kat it's all the same old stuff. A matronly woman is moving about taking orders, while a grey-skinned female humanoid wearing a sports-bra top, training shorts, and a strange belt is serving up platters of food at the woman's direction. The creature has thick ridges of what appear to be bone growing from its head, and its face lengthens somewhat into a snout, though it's able to emote like a human quite easily. It looks very happy with the praise it receives from one of the diners, before heading back and easily hefting a steel tray with what looks like fifty kilos of dirty dishware on it as if it were lifting a feather. When Christine first notices the sky darkening, she feels a little relieved. It's more like a really big room now. Still too big for her liking, much, much too big, but at least she can pretend it wasn't infinitely big.
Her relief doesn't last long, though, as she jumps at the noise, and... oh, hell, there's water coming down. She looks wildly around for where the emergency is, because the last time she experienced anything like this was when the fire suppression system went off in the MedBay. That was scary. She takes a little solace in the fact that no one around seemed to be panicking, though she does make sure to stick closer to their local guide... uh, what was her name? Kash? Kate? Er, Kat, right. She thinks.
The inside of the building they went into is...disorienting, to say the least. So much stuff is happening, Christine can't keep it all straight. Life was so much simpler back in the Vault...

Cecil took in the building cloud cover with a sense of wonderment and a bright smile. This was what he'd come to the surface for! Change! Excitement! Thoooooom! Flinching at the thunder, he laughed and reveled in the difference in humidity, the way the sheets of cold rain pounded his body. The boy took an extra moment outside to observe till he was soaked and cold, but loved every minute of it.
Dripping as he entered the tavern, Cecil's grin was ear to ear. The din outside felt good, the euphoria of that very real moment slowly letting him down to earth again. So that's Lucian. Seems like he's got a bit of class at least. The greaser watched the little exchange before turning his attention elsewhere. Another one of them humanshapes, but this one acts like a person. Should get in a word or two with her, if she can still speak.
"Care to have that smoke now, Kat? I'll split one with you." And anyone here who cares enough to notice strangers will catch on to the association.

As the first drops hit her face, Amber reaches towards a utility belt at her waist that isn't there, turning in the direction of the fall as she instinctively seeks out a leak in the...pipes...above... She stares up at the open grey sky, mouth agape as the roar of the thunder and--she's pulled along, and follows in stunned silence. A shiver traces up her spine at the crack of lightning, and she looks around belatedly, realizing she was brought into some sort of...bar, maybe, or restaurant?
She looks around, takes in the strange appearances of the individual patrons...and slides covertly towards Christine, taking a step behind the matronly woman. Her gaze catches a moment on the redsmith, but without the fire and crafting, he doesn't hold her attention for long--just another face in the strange crowd. The large, grey woman sort of thing is the most distracting thing in the room. A bioweapon, undoubtably created for the sake of fighting and destruction and--was it /bussing the tables?/
The sheer idea of this was overwhelming. It was like using a gun to hit a button across the room, or...or using a warhead as a table! How...how absurd! She shakes her head. Better to let Christine or Cecil lead them--or that, uh...that Kat girl. Who was travelling with them now, although she wasn't too clear on the details or expectations as far as that went. She still wasn't sure if she should be irritated or not at Cecil for inviting her to travel with them without bothering to check with the rest of their group. She wouldn't have protested, but the man's arrogant assumption that he had the right to make such a potentially major decision for /everyone/ without so much as a thought was a niggling annoyance in the back of her head that even the normally timid girl was having problems ignoring. It was one thing for him to act in the moment, or in situations like these--picking a table in a bar, making split second decisions in battle. But...she shakes her head, trying to push the thoughts away. They weren't productive.

Kat's eyes dart around the room-- assessing their company-- before resting on Lily with a mix of sadness and anger. She doesn't keep her gaze there too long, though, just in case the Machoke decides to look her way; that potential confrontation would be a bit more complicated to explain to the newcomers. She adjusts her goggles and is about to navigate to a table when she hears Cecil's summon and turns.
What's he playin' at? she thinks idly, running her tongue between her teeth. But the temptation is too strong. "Aight, yeah." She's a bit nervous, and it's shown in the way her gaze never stops moving for more than a few seconds at a time, but she can challenge anyone who dared question her... right?

As Kat and Cecil discuss grabbing a smoke and Amber and Christine mill about near the entrance, the matronly woman bustles up. "Hey now, yo ulot need to clear the door." She blinks when she sees Kat. "Ah, miss Kat playing tour guide eh? Good on ya hun. You all want something to eat or drink, you take a seat right over there," she gestures to one of the tables, "And I'll be by to take your orders in just a bit. Menu's are on the table. If you're just here for a drink, bar's over there, Stan will have you as wet inside as you are outside."
She eyes Amber and Christine for a moment, before glancing towards the pool hall area. The two guards have wandered off, one of the ladies that was with the man on the couch going with them towards a door marked "hotel", while the other girl is still hanging off the asian gentleman. Said gentleman is looking in your direction now, eyes assessing, even as he maintains his lounging position.
If you don't offer any resistance, the woman quickly ushers you all over to the restaurant area. From this angle you can see a number of scavenged pictures and paintings, a few that look like new even. There's also a notice board that was out of direct sight from the entrance, with what appear to be a number of papers tacked to it. As you look around, the grey-skinned female figure walks by, hefting another heavily loaded tray, and looks at you all curiously, before continuing on her way.

"Oh, uh, sorry about that," Christine says, quickly moving while remembering the last time they were in a doorway. At least this person seems nicer about it.
Sidling up to Cecil, Christine quietly asks "Why is she coming with us? And what gives you the right to decide that. If anything, it should be a group decision. You talk to me about compromising safety, but you're just dragging someone along who we know nothing about? Where we can't talk freely? How far were you planning to get her to tag along? All the way back home? Use the organ between your ears for once, DeLoria. Hard as that may be."

"No." Cecil lit his cigarette and took a slow draw from it, brightening the cherry to a fiery orange, water still dripping from his bangs and his coat. It was time to put this to bed in no uncertain terms.
"I talk to you about going off half-cocked and risking life and limb for strangers. You lot already blabbed about the vault in her presence so that ain't really a concern." Cecil paused to let that sink in, his voice just loud enough for Kat to hear beside him if she tuned in and concentrated. "Top that off, I checked with Cindy, you remember that woman you ran into outside of the store? Nothing bad to say. So there it is, informed decision-making."
Leaning back, Cecil folded a hand over his middle, offering Kat the half-butt that remained. "We gotta leave this town sometime, you want to do it blind? Fine. I'd rather have a survivor on my side."

Kat's eyebrows raise just a fraction. There was the confirmation she'd been wondering when she'd hear. Still, there was a bit of a difference between hearing your new comrades speak of a vault and actually understanding that until recently they'd lived in a fancy, comfortable hole in the ground for their entire lives.
She takes the smoke from Cecil's fingers greedily, pressing her tongue to the back of her upper teeth as she tries to work out what to say. After a short draw, she meanders to Christine, effectively forming a small triangle within their three bodies. "Tell ya what," she begins, blowing a puff of smoke in the medic's direction. "You stop harpin' on him and say somethin' positive for once and I'll pretend, for all the difference it'll make, like I ain't got a clue about 'back home' if anyone asks." She ponders this for a few seconds before adding, "He's right, y'know. Betcha anything that half of Purewater caught on to something bein' up. Words ain't the only spies in these parts. Here's my first word of advice: see that bloke at the back with chicks on either hip? He's eager to round you and Goldilocks up for his own collection. He'll be watchin' every word that spills from your lips whether he can hear 'em or not."
She hands the rest of the cig back to Cecil so she can lean in real close to Christine's ear, stroking the side of her face idly with a thumb as she does so. "Welcome to the wastes, sweetheart," she murmurs. "There's no talkin' freely anywhere up here."
Satisfied that she'd done her good deed for the time being, she winks at the two of them before taking their hands and leading them to the table that had been pointed out. "Come along, Goldilocks! The tastiest food in Purewater awaits."
