Yeah, it couldn't be. Scarlett, if blunt, to put it nicely, had caught a lot of Church's thoughts lately. The start of this new adventure and the friends he had been making along the ride had been new things to him. He used to be very scared of what other people would think of him if they found out about his family. About the horrible things he had done. He had never met the man, but all his life he had felt the ripples it caused to this day.
Now that he was travelling with people who didn't know who he was and didn't judge him, those years of narrow focus seemed like a weight lifted off his shoulders, and new feelings were beginning to occupy the space this freedom enabled.
And so, Scarlett Oak filled him with curiosity. He had never ever had a girl occupy such a large portion of his thoughts, and it had dawned on him what those thougths were inclined to.
And it wouldn't happen. No way. She was way out of his league. The universe simply seemed to not allow it.
And clearly, he should stop wondering whether this girl had really followed him. He had broken her record and she was very passionate about winning. It was logical (in a sense) that she'd develop an interest, just to set the record straight in the future.
Only that. A friendly rivalry. And if that was his role, Martin Churchill would happily comply.
"Sort of. More like the opposite kind of force. You know, the Kyogre to his Groudon, so to speak." He said to her, with a sheepish smile.

i1380.photobucket.com/albums/ah182/chrystalrogue/Scarlett%20Oak%20post%20avatar_zpspnywqiog.jpg “You know those two almost ended the world, right? That’s not a comforting comparison.” Scarlett peered at Church with narrowed eyes. It looked like she was about to ask him a question, but decided against it and asked him something very different. “You got any Rock-types, like a Geodude or something? I want to try out my Nidorino against something a little sturdier than a wild Pokemon before I try tackling the Pewter City Gym.”

"I know that, yes. I think the comparison's correct." He rectified
There was a small pause in Scarlett's speech, but she was probably imagining the catastrophic implications of Aurora's future clashes with Marshall.
She then asked a question to change the subject. Church was glad.
Nope, none at the moment. You know, I have a Spinarak that's not seeing much use and honestly I'm not sure it's a good fit for my current team composition. Terry wanted one, so maybe I could trade him for a spare Fossil Pokémon when he gets back." He deliberated for a moment, shifted in place and refocused. He tried not to think what invariably came to his minnd when he asked her "Either that, or I was planning to go to Mt Moon myself later and go hunting for a rock type. Maybe even a Clefairy. If you're free later you could... you know... come with us?"

"I got rock types in spades, but I guess you're gonna snub me, huh, Twig? Well, that's ok. I'm gonna earn the Boulder badge while you two chat. I can see at least one of you wants some privacy with the other anyhow!"
Marshall runs a hand across his face to get rid of any food hanging there, and walks out the door towards Pewter City and Peter.

i1380.photobucket.com/albums/ah182/chrystalrogue/Scarlett%20Oak%20post%20avatar_zpspnywqiog.jpg She looked back at Church, an eyebrow raised and lips pursed quizzically. Just why in the world would he want a Clefairy, of all things? That was too girly a Pokemon, even for her. It must be due to the thing’s reputation for rarity. That was the most plausible explanation. “My Pokemon are rather worn out,” she said, “and I’m wanting to catch a Sandshrew out on Route 3. How ‘bout we go into Mt Moon tomorrow afternoon?”What Scarlett wasn’t telling him was that she intended to try challenging the Gym Leader in between now and then, with her hopes of testing against a rival’s Rock-types dashed. She figured it couldn’t be too hard - Rock-type Pokemon were renowned for having a multitude of weaknesses, even if much of her team was weak to the type. Scarlett flashed Marshall a smile dripping in poisoned sweetness, and spoke with a tone to match. “I don’t doubt that you’ve been attracted to the type - like attracts like, after all - but I want someone who can command their Pokemon competently, not just batter away at an opponent with overwhelming force . . . or cheating.”

Great, then! He could take advantage of this and sneak some training in.
"Great, then! Maybe I'll go today and hunt for some fossils to get that out of the way. I'll leave you two to sort yourselves out. See you later!" He said with a grin, and departed.
And who knew, maybe a Clefairy would even show up. Getting a Fairy-type this early on who could serve as a Special defense and blaster would bear fruits on the long run. Maybe he could even find a Moon Stone for it. It wouldn't help against Peter, but he already had a plan for him.
A kitten was in need of some intensive training, it would seem.

Stephan Slider walks out of the museum into Pewter City's main streets. Stoisko skitters along at Stephan's side. He takes out one of his created Luxury Balls, and idly spins it on his finger.
"Now, Stoisko. What should we do while we wait for Terry?"
He looks around the streets, trying to get a sense of direction.
"Hmmm. I suppose it would need a bit of a trek to get to Mt. Moon... That's a shame. I'm itching to get something caught. You've grown quite a bit since we left but... Alone, you'll not be enough against a full team of trained fossils like that man probably has. And a freshy born fossil isn't going to get us a victory soon enough for my liking. What. To. Do."

After securing his win, Marshall exits the gym and heads down the path back to the Mt. Moon Pokemon Center with him arms behind his head in an utterly triumphant strut. As he is passing by the museum, daydreaming about adoring masses chanting his name, he collides bodily with a teen lost deep in thought, knocking both of them to the ground.
"Ah, damn! Sorry dude! My apologies!"
Marshall hops to his feet and offers a hand to the guy.

"Hmmph."
Stephan gets up, and dusts himself off.
"No apologies needed. You merely weren't looking where you were going."
He looks the newcomer up and down, before speaking again.
"That either means something really good or really bad happened to you and it's occupying your thoughts. So... which is it?"
He crosses his arms, expectantly.

"Really good, actually! I just defeated the gym leader of Pewter City about fifteen minutes ago! First one of my group to do so, and before Twig to bo- ah, you know, I didn't introduce myself. Name is Marshall."
The tall, stocky teen sticks a hand out to shake as he gives a toothy grin at his new acquaintance.
"How about you? Taken on Peter yet?"

"Ah, no. I only got into town an hour or so ago... Did you say Marshal?"
Stephan accepts the handshake.
"Stephan Slider. I believe I just met your friend Terry. He said he was traveling with two others, one of them you I believe. I had asked him if I could accompany, as I was asked by Professor Oak to accomplish dex research myself."
He gasts a gaze around the area.
"Although, truth be told, I doubt I'll attribute much energy to that search. I'll leave that to you three. I've got bigger plans that occupy my time."

"Oh sweet! Yeah, our other companion just straight up ditched us, so we definitely have a spot open. And don't worry about the dex' stuff! Catching pokemon becomes addicting once you start! I didn't even picture myself having ONE pokemon a year ago, and now I have nearly a dozen!"
Marshall stops to glance a moment at Stephan's belt, with the one lone pokeball.
"Speaking of which, do you want a pokemon to get you started? This whole "You can only use six pokemon at a time" thing is brutal! I have several good pokemon just sitting on the bench waiting for their chance to be used. I'd rather a traveling companion put them to use than have them sit idle in a computer. If Terry vouched for you, that is good enough for me."
The King takes this moment to walk over to Stoisko and start sniffing him, invading the bug's personal space. Marshall chatting away, is oblivious.

Stoisko takes one look at King's teeth before retreating into his rock shell and staying there for the duration of this conversation.
(Stoisko uses Withdraw!)
Stephan doesn't seem to notice the altercation and continues.
"Yes I suppose it 'could' be addicting to some people. Although I would not deny having a small battalion of pokemon at one's disposal 'is' tempting."
He ponders a bit.
"Well that's the 'second' offer of a pokemon today. I graciously accept, although I will say that your group is quite generous. Either that or your group has entirely too much money to spend on pokeballs."
Stephan laughs.
"Not that I would complain, as I happen to make them, alongside many other things helpful to trainers just as yourself. So if you all happen to need someone to continually make pokeballs for you I'd be utterly overjoyed to oblidge."

Along the way, Spot smelled something and stopped on the way. Intrigued, Church tried to discern what had caused the Ivysaur to focus and quickly found the responsible.
Marshall was on a side road, talking to someone. It was a young man, but older than them by his looks. He carried himself with a rather sophisticated air and was chatting casually with Marshall, creating a strong contrast of character.
He waved and called out as Spot and him approached the two.
"Hey Marshall! Who's your friend? I'm Martin, but they call me Church. Nice to meet you!"
He extended his hand in greeting.

The King sniffs aggressively around Stoisko's shell, prodding it with his nose as the two converse.
"That is great news. Yeah, I have found myself running through pokeballs quite a bit!"
Marshall turns to face Church as he approaches.
"Hey Church, meet Stephan. Terry invited him to our group, and we were just getting to know each other."

"Ah, Terry did mention a 'Martin' in your group. Excellent. Then that's all of you."
Stephan shakes Church's hand.
"Greetings 'Church'. I am Stephan Slider, craft-master extraordinaire. I spoke with Terry earlier, and was just informing Marshall here that, unless you have a reason to deny me, I will be replacing your empty slot in your group. I was just given a pokedex and the task to research, although as I said I'll leave that up to you. I just finished telling Marshall that my real task is to craft... well all sorts of things. Including pokeballs, which it sounds like Marshall is into that idea."
Stephan turns to Marshall again and gives a sly grin.
"I'll assure you that they are top-quality and 'much' cheaper than any standard pokemart. I hope that you two will consider me always open for crafting business, and come to me first. I'll even give you all discounted rates, much below what I'd charge any random passerby."
Stoisko stays withdrawn, shaking the incense Stephan made for it, hoping the fumes will drive King away.
