In the midst of battle, Amber's eyes widen as the pokemon attempts to heal itself. That's so...unique! She pays close attention, trying to figure out /how/. She glances over at Totodile, checking on him as she pulls a second ball out of her pocket. His irritated hissing worries her for a moment as the pokemon kicks the ground, sitting down and pouting. She turns back to the striped dog again. Sticking her tongue out, she narrows her eyes and throws another ball, only noting after she's tossed it, in the heat of battle, that the dog seems to have stepped back a little. Still, these balls are a wonder of technology, and no better way to see how they work than to just use one... Pity that doesn't seem likely, as yet another ball flies past the pokemon. Prior round swift - Record Morning Sun Amber throws another pokeball, but it misses.
Totodile is pouting and not making an action in this combat.

"Whoa, mellow out fish... no need to go ape on stinko over there." Cecil took to a knee beside it. "You did me a solid, I got you. Joe, tell your skag to piss off! We're good over here!" Burned hand still shaking, Cecil put away his knife while stooping, and withdrew his canteen. Fumbling with the container for a few seconds, he managed to get the cap off, splashing the still cool water over his blistering hand, letting it run off and onto the Barboach.
"There, it's a twofer. I can't spare much more then that, sorry bud." Another splash and he capped his canteen, hooking it onto his belt. "Didn't do that much for me, but I hope it helps, wherever you're headed. Pretty badass that you're even out of water in the open sun like this."

Thought you were going to sneak up on me did you?Bunnie watches and waits as she sees the orange dog try to get away from everyone else. As Amber throws a Pokeball and misses, she decides to try and catch it herself. If what Shulk said was right and this thing would listen to us afterwards, having all three of these dogs seems like a good way to get on protecting ourselves quickly. "Doug, use the Peck attack again." Doug charges in with his horn set forward, ready to drill into the orange dog. 3 - To Hit 17 - Damage
After Doug's attack Bunnie gets her Pokeball out and throws it as hard as she can. 8 - To Hit (13-6+1) 94 - Capture Roll

Joe's all too brief moment of triumph as he actually managed to hit the dog soured immediately as he realized he'd attracted its ire. What had he been thinking? "Aheh... [small]aheh...[/small]" His breath came out in ragged wheezing almost-laughs as his face drained of blood, his skin clammy. This was it - he was about to get mauled to death, not even an hour after leaving the Vault. But the dog apparently didn't like getting ganged up on any more than Joe did, and the janitor almost collapsed in relief when it tried to escape. Whirling to make sure nothing else was sneaking up on him, he - Smacked the skunk right in the face. "Grimer, get over here and protect me!" he practically screamed, stumbling backwards in terror. Perking up and apparently forgetting about the eel completely, the poisonous Pokemon roiled dutifully in Joe's direction, almost flowing over the orange-striped dog before it noticed something was blocking its path. With a gurgling hiss it released a fine purple mist at the offending obstacle. Joe deals 18 physical Dark damage to the Stunky. Grimer uses Acid Spray (AC 2) vs the Flanked Growlithe - 7 Special Poison damage - 27, and Growlithe gets -2 SDef CS. [ Map ]

The offering of water and the calming words, coupled with the Grimer moving way, all seem to calm the strange fish, which gives a pleased gurgle as the water soaks into its slightly slimy skin. It curls up a bit next to Cecil, watching the remaining combat with interest. (Barboach is out of the initiative) Joe's panicked flailing strikes the Stunky straight on the snout, making it give out a pained hiss. Its eyes gleam as it glares at Joe, readying its claws as it stalks after the fleeing janitor, before snarling in confusion as first Amber then Bones take jabs at it as it passes. Bones' strike actually seems to wound it, and it lets out a screech of fury, leaping at the Happiny and scratching at him furiously. But the little rotund mon''s skin easily resists the blunted claws. Stunky takes damage from two AoOs, and is injured. The Fletchling, satisfied that the threat has been driven away, begins to fussily preen Cathrine's hair. (Fetchling has left the initiative) The tiger-dog lets out a yap of disapproval at Bone's actions from earlier, opening his mouth wide, and sending a blistering spark of flame spiraling at the little egg. It is much more powerful than the Houndour's had been. 34 special Fire damage on Bones. Doug finally arrives, tearing at the cream and orange fur with teeth and horn, just before his mistresses pokeball slams into the beast. The capsule is scored by a wave of sludge as Grimer gets there, but remains intact as it wriggles and bounces fiercely over the grass... finally coming to rest with a soft "ping". Bones, denied his initial target, instead takes his frustrations out on the Stunky, slapping the mustelid silly. Bunnie: 14 Cecil: 14 Joe: 13 Fink: 12 Stunky: 12 Amber: 10 Christine: 10 Fletchling: 11 Totodile: 6 Doug: 5 Grimer: 5 Bones: 3

Regaining what little composure he had as other Pokemon intercepted the skunk, Joe took note of how effective the Pokeballs had been at removing threats so far and desperately flung one of his own - perhaps a little too hard. With the dog out of its way, the Grimer simply continued obliviously moving in a straight line until it ran into something else... literally. Joe Flings (AC 2) a Pokeball at the Stunky - 4 Physical Dark damage - 12 Capture check after damage - 56 If the Stunky isn't caught or down by the time Grimer reaches it, it'll use Pound (AC 2) - 4 Physical Normal damage - 13 [ Map ]

The pokeball wobbles and bobbles, before locking with a soft ping. Leaving only the Fletchling and the rather friendly fish out. The Fletchling is still studiously grooming Christine's hair. (END COMBAT) 30 Mon XP to be split, 1 TXP for your first battle

Having a seat next to the Barboach, Cecil made eye contact with it briefly, before looking at each of the others. Skrub's words echoed in his head that he could be great if he really tried. Here he was, outside, being set on fire by dogs, and making friends with fish. He was the only one among the humans that had even been reasonably hurt. The greaser called that a bit of a win.
The burn sucked, but Cecil wasn't going to whine to Christine about it. She'd already been pretty clear she didn't care for his stupid decisions. Getting set on fire was probably one of the worst ideas he'd had to date. Bunnie was alright, that was what mattered. "I'm still a sucker for that pretty face." He thought with a shake of his head and a smile.
Turning his wrist-mounted analyzer on the fish, he listened as it chimed and explained what it's purpose was. "Barboach, the Whiskers Pokemon. Water/Ground type. Developed initially as a filter fish to assist cleaning fish farms of excess waste, its hardy composition and unprecedented ability to crawl overland allowed it to escape into the wild and begin breeding. It is passive in nature, attacking only when threatened or agitated, coating its entire body with a slimy fluid so it can squirm and slip away if grabbed."
"Huh..." Cecil gave the barboach an experimental stroke with a finger, finding it's muscular body was almost rubbery beneath the coat of whatever it secreted. Rubbing it between his fingers, he found it smelled strongly of the fish itself. "Whoa bud...you're something else." He jerked his hand away from his nose as he processed the new smell. "Alright, you saved my good jacket from getting ruined, not to mention my face. I ain't letting you get eaten by fire spitting dogs, get in the ball."

Looking around, the fighting seemed to be over. That was good. "Is anyone hurt?" Christine asked. "If so, I've got some things in my pack that I should be able to throw together to help." She giggled, feeling the bird in her hair. " Hehe, that tickles." She thought about the others, in how they captured new companions in those capsules, and pulled one out. She wanted to take the bird along, it seemed like a nice companion, but it didn't seem right just whipping a sphere at it. She tried looking up at it, before remembering that it was on her head. "Hey, little guy," she said, "How would you feel about coming along with us?" She didn't know if it could even understand her or not, but it seemed reasonably intelligent, but she waited to see the reaction of it or her traveling companions. Charm: 9

Amber watches the spray of fire, lips parted in wonder. How on earth does it...? There's movement to her side and she jerks, slapping out in a panic. She touches course fur, and watches in wonder as Joe manages to stop the strange smelly pokemon and lock it away. All of this is so fascinating that she almost forgets she's in danger, reaching in her pocket to grab a third sphere.
She frowns as she notices the dog get snagged and locked into someone else's ball in the chaos. She frowns deeper as she looks around and notices that the strange creatures had vanished--either being held or spoken to by her teammates, or having been locked inside the strange balls. So much for testing the new technology, she sulks as she picks up her missed objects, somewhat resentful. She stands back as the others deal with the remains of battle, waiting until they're ready to move on. Her Totodile follows over, sulking a lot more visibly.
"You too, huh?" She says to the reptile that flops at her feet, making a grumbling noise. So much for being useful...

If he'd been thinking straight, Joe would've fled the moment his Pokeball made contact with the skunk, but instead he'd been locked in place by the tension as the ball rocked back and forth. Almost like it was taunting him. Yet instead of launching an angry monster in his face - or exploding, which he'd considered the next likely outcome - it gave a surprisingly satisfying ding. Joe stared in disbelief for a good ten seconds before looking around and realizing that, against all odds, they didn't appear to be in immediate danger anymore. He fumbled with Grimer's Pokeball for a second, finally recalling the purple blob before it could embarrass him further. Or accidentally kill him. He wasn't sure which fate was worse at the moment.
Joe nearly stumbled as he retrieved his first catch, the rush of panicked adrenaline rapidly fading. He could still feel his heart pounding like it wanted to leap from his chest because he wasn't running away fast enough. Never in his life had Joe been so frightened - and he had quite a bit of experience in that department to compare to. Stepping towards Christine when she made her offer, he shoved his two Pokeballs towards her as if he thought they might burst open at any moment.
"Well. We didn't die," he admitted lamely.

Bunnie holds both of her newly filled Pokeballs in her hands as she watches the rest of the group getting everything settled.
"So. That could have gone a lot worse."
She walks over to Doug and begins petting the top of his head. "You did amazing little buddy. I'm proud of you." She begins to eye her Poke Balls, contemplating her next action carefully. "Doug, watch my back. And by that I mean keep me safe." She adds the last part, remembering how literally the Grimer reacted to the same command. With a deep breath she lets out the two dogs she caught. They both emerge from the Poke Balls. The Growlithe lays on the ground, licking a wound where Doug had slammed into him. Bunnie reaches into her pack and removes a bandage to begin patching him up, after giving him a quick scan with the Vault Dex.
"I think I'll call you.. Gary. You seem like a Gary."
Gary begins to lick her hand as she finishes the bandage. Bunnie keeps an eye out in the meantime and watches as the Houndour begins going from tree to tree and peeing on them.
"You're definitely going to be Tinkles."
She calls Tinkles to her and applies a bandage to her as well. Both dogs seem to appreciate the care, and she smiles before sending them back to their Poke Balls. She pets Doug on the head again before sending him back to his.

"I'll be fine." Cecil responded to Christine irritably as he stood from his task. Returning Fink to his ball, and safely pocketing his new acquisitions 'Boneyard' and 'Slick', the greaser glared daggers at Joe but held his tongue. What was responsibility to someone that'd never cared about it? He didn't owe them anything, not even Bunnie, much as the thought of leaving her with this bunch made him uncomfortable. She'd manage. Maybe?
If Cecil did decide to bug out, he'd bring her with him. With his smarts and her charm they'd get by at least, which was more then he could say for Joe's panicked flailings coupled with Christine's can-do attitude. He remained unusually quiet, bristling as he continued down the road that this untamed wilderness had left ahead of them. ~How could Skrub not have seen any of this coming?~ The man thought to himself. ~Send a group into the unknown with nothing but preconceived notions of each other and a little food. Thanks pops.~

Cecil, the Barboach regards the ball, then you, then back to the ball. After a long moment of deliberation, it raises its tail... and smacks the button straight on. Huh, you didn't even have to explain the thing to him. Odd. The ball barely even shakes before the "ping" and "click" sounds, indicating a successful capture, which is echoed by a short "beep" from your Vault-Dex. With Christine, the Fletchling is eyeing her curiously, before bobbing its head in a nod. It seems to be content with her newly preened hair, and more than willing to accept a partnership with the young girl, giving a melodious chirrup. Upon being offered a pokeball, it will examine the device for a moment, looking over towards Cecil and the Barboach, before pecking the contact sensor, and being sucked inside. When Bunnie releases "Gary" and "Tinkles", the two mon are groveling and rolling in the grass, bellies and throats exposed to show that they recognize her as their new pack leader. They both let out small whuffs of contentment along with whines as their wounds are seen to. Growlithe, the Puppy Pokemon. Fire-Type. Developed as an early mammal-type elementally capable pokemon, Growlithe is capable of producing searing heat and flames. Combined with its sense of smell it was used primarily as a search-and-rescue animal in mountainous locations, until the onset of the war, where it was easily retrained as a combat animal. Synching to pokeball, subject using seven percent of its full capabilities. Known attacks are: Ember, Roar, Bite and Morning Sun." The attacks and their effects are listed off on the 'Dex's screen as they were for the other starters. As the group licks their wounds (or refuses to acknowledge them in Cecil's case) Amber's Vault-Dex pings again. It's re-acquired the radio signal, and the map program has now finished syncing with the few satellites that are still up and functioning. It's also acquired a second signal, and some sort of decryption program has come into play. The first signal is marked as "Vault-Tek Convoy Satt-Tracker" while the other is simply marked as "Purewater Signal". Tuning into the first gives you a repeating series of beeps and silences. Morse code perhaps? Tuning into the other... and music, brash and warm and of a type you'd never heard playing on the Vault's tapes begins to play from Amber's wrist. Bringing up the map function shows the sources of both signals. The convoy signal is close, maybe a mile away, likely following the remnants of the road you're on. The Purewater Signal is further out, maybe a day's travel, and it kind of looks like it's in the same direction that the Barboach was headed.

Amber glances down at her wrist, frowning as she fiddles with it. She hits the Tracker option first, hoping the machine has hooked onto something interesting. When it only results in a series of beeps, she blinks and shares a glance with the Totodile that still hasn't moved from where it flopped slightly on top of her feet, staring up at her. She stares down at it, weirdly at ease, as she tries to see if she can identify anything from the sounds. It's--not, /he's/--...kind of cute, she thinks to herself absentmindedly as she switches to the second signal, expecting much of the same. She almost yelps when they're instead treated to a loud stream of....music?
She gapes at her wrist, then looks up at the rest of the group. "Is that..." She holds out her wrist instinctively as she trails off, as if to offer it to someone, before remembering what it is and that it doesn't exactly come off. Instead, the blond girl closes her eyes, enjoying yet another moment of /novelty/ after a life in the enclosed, repeating vault. After a moment she glances at the rest of the group and says, in a small voice barely audible over the music, "...is it too early to hope this means survivors, somewhere?"

"I think I'll call you... Coiffe," Christine says to the bird. "It seems to fit." She takes a few moments to catch her breath, and just take in the surroundings again. When Amber's Vault-Dex begins beeping, she doesn't think much of it, having grown inured to beeping after working in the Medical Bay for so long. But the music... that was something new and different.
"What..what's happeing, Miss Cole?" Christine asks. Remembering what the Dex said about Fletchling and music, she releases Coiffe into the air again. "Listen Coiffe. Isn't it pretty?" After registering Amber's question, she replies "I'm sure of it. How else could it have run so long? There has to be someone around to maintain it, right? If it's anything like the Vault"

Amber tilts her head for a moment. "Even the vaults took a look of work to upkeep, and they were designed to last... I think you're right," She says. Still, something's tickling the back of her mind and she bites her lip, thinking. Something about those beeps was...familiar. She taps against her leg, imitating the beeps...
"...I think there's something else," She says, frowning. Amber looks up at the sky, continuing to tap, before her eyes widen. "Oh! Those beeps...I think I've remember...they were used as a distress signal. If I'm thinking of the right thing, I mean. Um, they were usually solar powered, so that signal could be who knows how old, but..."
The tiny girl trails off, chewing on a thumbnail for a few moments. "There might be something to salvage at least?"

Bunnie returns Tinkles and Gary to their Pokeballs, happy they accepted her as quickly as they did. The old man wasn't lying when he said these things changed their disposition almost immediately. She'd have to be sure not to waste any of the others, no telling what they might come across.
"It only makes sense. Ours wasn't the only Vault around I'm sure. There were likely a few hundred of them I'm sure. There has to be others out here, I'm sure of it."
She walks over to Cecil and reaches into her bag. After pulling out a bottle of water she offers it to him.
"Thanks for having my back just now. I put myself into a really stupid position. If the others hadn't distracted this Growlithe I might have been toast, probably literally. We cool?"

"Sure, don't worry about it Bun." Cecil responded distractedly, double taking before accepting her water with a respectful nod. Music. Not something they'd heard over and over in the vault either. It was new, and crisp, pleasant to the ears. Not at all like the swing that was common among the static laden recordings that remained in that underground cell.
His attention was on Amber for the first time since they'd left the vault, eyes fixated on her wrist. Moments passed and finally Cecil left his intense focus, having a swig of the water. "Slick protected me whether he intended it or not, so it's little harm no foul this time." Shielding his eyes against the sun, he looked up, then checked the time on his Vault-Boy.
"Ideally we could make it to the radio station before dark, but the convoy signal isn't far. It'll be a fairly short walk, and it ain't really out of the way."
