“Eh? What’s that?” the old man cupped his ear, turning his ear towards Church. Almost before the kid finished, he waved the offer off. “No, no, no nothing to burn here. It’s bad for the Combees, scares them off, yes?”

As the group approaches, Marshall tries to suss out if the man appears to be pranking them, or if he is genuinely hard of hearing, by watching his facial expressions. Ms710jQS4-24
Regardless of the result, in a loud voice and a charming smile, he exclaims, "We were just passing through to Pewter City, when we saw your home, and thought we'd see if you needed any help. Living on your own out here amongst the Weedles has to be rough!"4-24

i1380.photobucket.com/albums/ah182/chrystalrogue/Logan%20Vali%20post%20avatar_zpsqip6kjvf.jpg The old man nodded along, expression growing a bit puzzled at the end. "Eh? What's that about Paul McCartney, yes? You're trying to see the Beatles? I thought they broke up!" "Don't mind him," a handsome young man said as he stepped out of the cottage. "Grandfather likes to have a bit of fun at travelers' expense."The old man chuckled at that, wizened face cracking into a broad grin that showed still-healthy teeth rather at odds with his otherwise aged appearance. "But if you kids are offering," he said, "I think I can come up with some chores for you to do, yes. Got some Rattatas in the basement, I do, eating my supplies and nibbling on my things." Scarlett may have muttered "You've got to be kidding me" under her breath, but it's hard to tell.

i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag43/Nido_Nido_Nido/Amber%20profile_zpsi5h6z4n6.png Amber sheepishly returned her potion to her pack and snickered at Marshall's pantomime. She shuffled her feet a bit when the pleasant old man tried talking with the group. Talking loudly was not one of Amber's strong suits, and her already...less-than-decent people skills wasn't going to do her any good. And her lack of people skills flared with the addition of the handsome grandson. First they started traveling with the model-esque trainer, and now this. Amber once again began to sweat, and decided to enter into the conversation with a small, "hi."

"Teaching rats what's what? I'm all for that! If only I brought Ishida, they would see a true warrior rat! I think Puluga is hankering for another fight though!" Marshall is vibrating with anticipation. "Take us to the problem!"

"We'll take care of the Rattatas, sure." Church said, a bit upset at the fact that the old man had played a trick on them. They should probably get as much detail from the situation as they could first. In case.
"Anything else we could know about the Rattatta problem beforehand?"

Terry catches up to the party, having fallen behind while playing with Iola. His grin is wider than ever, the Honeycomb Badge pinned to his bandanna and Ledian flying around him.
"Rattatas huh? Iola and I will be happy to help. Whats the problem anyway?"

i1380.photobucket.com/albums/ah182/chrystalrogue/Logan%20Vali%20post%20avatar_zpsqip6kjvf.jpg The young man smiled perfunctorily at Amber, a hint of unease behind the expression. “Hello,” he said politely, then smiled. “I’m Logan, Logan Vali. Who’re you?” He coughed, realizing that probably came off a little ruder than he’d intended. “I mean, what’s your name?”“What’s the problem?” the old man echoed Terry’s question as though it were the most obvious thing in the world, “They’re eating my supplies! Chewing on my walls! They done turned my cellar into a real warren with their digging and gnawing!” He chuckled. “They won’t be a problem for talented trainers with fancy Badges like you, yes.”

i1380.photobucket.com/albums/ah182/chrystalrogue/Scarlett%20Oak%20post%20avatar_zpspnywqiog.jpg “You can have fun crawling around the basement with the Rattatas,” Scarlett said with a suppressed shudder as she hitched her backpack back up on her shoulders and hooked her thumbs under the straps. “I’ll, um, I’ll push on ahead. No time to waste and all that. Next time I see you, I’ll have my next badge - try not to fall too far behind me, Marty!” With that, she walked off with a wave of the fingers, her Charmeleon falling in step behind her.

She hadn't just...
Yes, she had. She had called him Marty.
Nobody but his old schoolmates had ever called him that. Back then, there had been a popular movie starring a hip young man and an older scientist. It was something about time travel. All the kids in school used to quote the movie around him ad nauseam. Day after day, it became unbearable. He couldn't even watch the film, even today. The movie, the actors and especially the nickname "Marty" which the older character always managed to include in his lines, were completely ruined to him.
Come High School, he saw an opportunity and took it, casually introducing himself with "They call me Church". Nobody called him that. Well, nobody until then. The new name stuck like glue.
Still, old scars remained. He did not like that nickname. Not one bit.
Visibly, his brow lowered, his mouth slightly open in shock. His eyes narrowed. He started to show a faint hint of a grin. Not the good kind of grin.
"Good luck! Let's hope you do better than next time, Twig. Try to catch yoursefl some grass types, will you?" He said, wearing as much of a smile as he could.

i1380.photobucket.com/albums/ah182/chrystalrogue/Scarlett%20Oak%20post%20avatar_zpspnywqiog.jpg Scarlett pursed her lips and looked at him quizzically a moment, then brushed off the nickname. Maybe he thought ‘Twig’ was a nickname of hers or something silly like that after he overhead it from that blockhead Marshall. No matter; she’d set him straight when they met back up in Pewter City after she got out of this creepy forest - and won the Boulder Badge. Maybe she would look into getting a Grass-type Pokemon, at that.
