It's a hunter, and so that's what its memories have been. Continually vying for something that glowed, only to be beaten back at the last moment, often by others in the area. The glowers seem to have some solidarity. It's in pain, searching for a meal, and hoping that this one is an easier target.
It feels too proud and wary to accept an offer to help hunt. All it will do is make it seem weaker, and easier prey for those farther and farther below...

"Then I will go back to the light, where it is safe.". Parish began a slow ascent. "Good luck with your hunt. Thank you for the warning about the deep.". He began his ascent again. The seafloor, as fascinating as it might see what sorts of things crawled about in the sand at such depths, no doubt houses things beyond his ability to communicate with, much less combat. With better gear, or a Pokemon better suited, it was a plan. Before that it was needlessly dangerous.
He swam upwards, tracking the Pokemon's senses, and preparing to move counter to a strike should it make one.

He begins to swim upwards, back towards the light. There's quiet for a few moments, as the serpent seems to try and decide what to do. There's only a few seconds of mental warning before the strike happens, lunging towards his leg.
The strike never arrives. There's a flash and a tingle - as well as a mental cry of pain - as one of the small blue jellyfish with yellow deelyboppers from just above him seems to have sent out a shock. There's a bit of a rhythmic, though irregular, pulsing from its light.
It seems to have been too much for the serpent, who slinks away to hope for finding easier prey.

Friends in dark places, that was both unexpected, and welcome. He floated curiously nearer the glowfish. Concentrating on it now, he didn't draw incredibly close, remembering how his size startled the smaller Pokemon above.
Gratitude, curiosity, and confusion were what he projected. "Why did you help / May I come near?". He asked, giving it a polite wave.

It seems confused. It's a glowing friend ahead of it... but the glow is different than that of friend. It's bigger, and isn't communicating. Is friend okay? Is it not a friend? It feels like maybe friend, but maybe not.

"I'm a friend, just different.". He moved closer to it, feeling the tingles along his skin. The saltwater was more conductive then freshwater. "Thank you for saving me. It would be very nice to have more friends like you. Being eaten is bad.". The boy approached the fish, till they were inside of each other's light radius.
"Human.". He tapped his chest lightly. "From where it is bright."

The fish seems to make an attempt at copying the motion, first with a stubby arm, then with one of its deelies. It's flashing a pattern with its light, it seems, and feels concerned that it's not getting a response. It feels good that there's a friend, but is worried that Parish's light isn't working.

"I'm okay, I promise.". He seems amused by the concern, reaching up to lightly cup one of the deelies in his palm. "I can't make electricity like you, just light. It is safer closer to the surface. "It was nice meeting you. Very nice. I am safe now.". What strange, beautiful eyes. They must be meant to filter out the Pokemon's own light. With the proximity to its face, sight would likely be hard otherwise.

Underwater conversation is hard, but it seems like it gets the gist, as it begins to gently ascend towards the surface, amidst several others of its species. There's a slow contentment - it seems to take life relatively slowly, in fact. There's still curiosity, but it's somewhat whetted now, replaced by compatriotism.

Parish is content to ascend with the school of strange fish. They weren't afraid of much, which wasn't surprising given the current they could generate. If they had predators in the ocean they must be exceedingly rare. "We could talk more, and I could show you things beyond the dark. Beyond the water. Keep you safe, as a friend."

There's the bubbling of curiosity again from the Pokémon, as it seems to consider his offer. It feels agreeable, and makes some squeaking noises along with the pulses of light as it reaches out for Parish with its stubby arms. It seems as though he might have found a friend, if he wants.
"How you holding up there?" the voice of Rebecca asks, interrupting the moment. At least on Parish's end. "Well, I mean, obviously you didn't get your leg bitten off or whatever, but emotionally."

He turns his attention to the Chinchou, gently rubbing along the Pokemon's belly with the flat of his hand, and though words are impossible he vocalizes a pleased sound. Giving the Chinchou a gentle squeeze against his side, he offers a thumbs up in his field of vision. He had made a friend, though it didn't fully understand what he was asking of it.
It had been scary, but he had gotten away unscathed thanks to a new partner, and learned that deep water was not a place for small fish or small humans. Not without friends.
He would explain Pokeballs as best he could, and ensure it was certain it wanted to go with him before taking things any further. A safe place to rest, where the Chinchou would always be close. Told it of dry places where things were heavier.

It takes some time to convey it all, since it seems like the Chinchou had never properly been above water, but it seems curious, even if startled when being fully out for the first time. But the agreement is made, and it's willing to come along to see the world. ...whatever that really is. It's things beyond basically a single cove-shelf-thing, at least! With a happy cheer, and some stubby arm waves, the jellyfish seems happy to be carried forth into... well, whatever's out there. Parish caught a Pokémon!
Chinchou is Level 20, Male, has Volt Absorb and you can choose Nature and Moves. It has Hold Hands and Shock Wave as learned moves, and Nuzzle and Soak as Inheritance Moves.

Once more on the surface of the water, Parish held his nose and pressurized his lungs until a not insignificant amount of water blew itself out his gills. With a wet cough and a sharp inhale he was breathing air again. "I'll never get over how efficient gills are. The faster you swim, the better they work. That was a bit spooky, but it's a good thing I bumped into that big water snake, and Hero here!"
Parish smooshed the Chinchou's round face playfully so Rebecca could get a good look, still bonded with the fish. "I learned a lot. Apparently Hero talks with his light and a really small electric current, and is a schooling fish. Also there are even bigger things then that eel if you go deeper. I want to see the bottom really bad, but it is probably not a good idea with this adaptation. Everything for a super long ways could see me, and that isn't a good thing, but I still wanna do a night swim."
He gets it all out in the span of one or two breaths, taking his bearings for the portal home, before starting in that direction. There would probably be other islands along the way, where he could check another seashelf and explore for land life.

"Well," Rebecca says, laughing, after a moment, "that's certainly interesting. Glad you had a good time, I guess. He looks squishy," she adds, offhandedly.
"Are you sure you're wanting to do a night dive?" she asks, "if the things that live in the dark swim up from that dark..."

"If it is as bright as it was last night, and that brightness permeates, I don't imagine they will come up too far, but I will be careful, I've got a schoolmate now.". Though the initial presentation was bright and jovial, there was a pause and a little sigh before he slipped back underwater and into silence. Were humans pack animals? He always felt better when someone was around. More safe.
At least Faith didn't look at any of it unfavorably. He rolled onto his back, with Hero on his belly, held gently, kicking along towards his destination. The little influxes of current tickled back and forth across his belly, and the fish turned to watch the waves and consider the giant friend in the sky which also didn't talk.

The something that strikes him as different about here, Parish realizes, while drifting along... is that there's not really any sea birds. No loud noisy screeching, or flocks filling the skies. It's much... quieter. The waves are less severe. Barring the depths, it seems to be a much softer planet in general.
Floating along, he eventually reaches another island, which seems to be much more lush and lively than the first. Where the one the group'd been dumped on was fairly barren, this one has less of the barren shallows around it, and a sturdy forest on it, with colourful trees. There's even dirt here, rather than just sand.
Hero just stares at it all. These things were so big! Going up further than he'd ever gone down.

He wondered what would cause that. There hadn't been a lunar body that he had noticed overhead. With no moon, the proximity to the sun would determine the tides and currents. As a Gamma Class it was habitable, and the sun far distant. Birds would need nesting land, and would be subject to predation while grounded. Even seabirds often used cliff faces for nesting, and so far there had been little in the way of stone. All of it fine sand.
Until now. Nestling Hero atop his pack, he let the fish ride as comfortably as a fish out of water might. The sand gave way to soil and large, vibrant trees. This island must have been broader in scope then those he had come from. Introducing Oops to Hero could come when he settled for the day, for now he would explore the forest in earnest.

There are pulsing tingles as Hero rides along. It seems, though, that things on land are much more few and far between than the ones in the water. There are vague rustles in underbrush - likely the things that munch on plants - but nothing really reveals itself to him. So there's evidently at least one predator around here.
Even though he can't see anything, though, he gets the unnerving feeling of being watched.

Parish communicates wariness to the fish, and slowly turns in place. Releasing Oops!, the boy makes a gesture for quiet, and shares similar with his friend. He'd never held multiple hands at once before. It was slightly disorienting. The Phlask floated up to eye level to the right of his trainer's head, and the three kept lookout for several moments.
