Sapphire's tail whips in excitement as she approaches the Meditite. The Machop and the Meditite both acknowledge your challenge, bow formally (somewhat awkwardly), and take a fighting stance. Combat begins. Yash and Sapphire both go at Initiative 15. The Machop has Initiative 14, the Meditite Initiative 9

Vess looks to Jean-Marie, considering. "I mostly am interesting in tough pokemon or steel types... are either of those steel? And... how do we wish to approach this situation? Fight? Friend?"

"Sapph, this is going to hurt. Just strike hard and fast and don't let up!"
Orianne tried to prepare her partner for facing off against a type disadvantage. They had never done this before.
Orianne uses Focused Training on Sapphire! (+1 accuracy and +2 skill checks)
Sapphire uses Storm Sword on Meditite.
Storm Sword! Attack: xH10TLlO1d20+2 vs. AC 2 Damage: DB 7 2d6+24 Electric, Physical damage.

The Meditite tries to avoid Sapphire's electrified claws, but ends up taking the hit anyway, several shock burns showing on its skin. Frustrated at the unexpected impact, the fighting type lashes out, sending a swift jab with its legs to Sapphire's front paws. Meditite uses Low Kick on Sapphire! AC2: cckSNuIo1d20, DB4: 1d8+18 Physical Fighting Type Damage. 1d20·1d8+18

It was fairly obvious that the kick had injured the cat's paws, but instead of looking uncertain, she looked mad.
"Finish the fight before you take another one of those!"
Orianne pushed to have Sapphire keep on the offensive. She knew the cat didn't have the defense or the type to play the stall game.
Orianne uses Focused Training on Sapphire! (+1 accuracy and +2 skill checks)
Sapphire uses Bite on Meditite.
Bite! Attack: mQD2QyzP1d20+2 vs. AC 2; Flinch on 15+ Damage: DB 6 2d6+22 Dark, Physical damage 1d20+2·2d6+22

Sapphire pounces at the Meditite, despite her bruised and hurting legs, and clamps her fangs around the fighter's shoulder, shaking him wildly before throwing it away. The Meditite roughly lands on its feet, trembling slightly, before toppling forward, landing on the ground with a thud. It barely has time to tap the ground twice before it falls unconscious.

Orianne knelt down and clapped her hands a single time. It was an effort to call off Sapphire. That the fight was over, and not to finish the kill.
"Good girl! You did exactly what you were suppose to."
Sapphire held her head up high as she came back, attempting to strut despite the limping from battered front paws. Orianne rewarded her with scratches behind the ears and down her back. While giving her pets, the girl watched how the machop responded to his training partner being knocked out.

Jean-Marie thinks for a second, considering the question.
"I am much better at fighting than I am at talking, if I am honest," she says, frowning a bit. She looks down at her 'dex again at the Drilbur entry still opened. "It says here that it is just Ground type but evolves into a Steel type, Excadrill?"

Benji didn't even have time to think before Sapphire and Orianne start their battle. Benji considers starting as well, but the quick feud between meowth and meditite is almost hypnotic, and in a few seconds it's over. Benji blinks startled, quickly remembering he was also supposed to fight. The boy bows as formal for the Samsara, left hand on his back and right hand over his heart, making a perfect angle with his waist. "Thanks for this opportunity," he says, smiling at their opponent. "Let's give them a good show as well, shall we?"As if on cue, Yash quickly moves forward, head low as the momentum throws his small body straight into the machop's chest. Actions: Benji uses Inspired Training on Yash as a Priority. Yash will use Tackle on Machop.
Tackle! Accuracy Check: l9q3Lp0D1d20+1 vs. AC 2 (spending 1 AP) Damage: 2d6+19 + 1d10 (Adaptability) Physical, Normal damage. 1d20+1·2d6+19·1d10

The machop grunts slightly as he takes the impact straight on, skidding back a couple of meters. Shaking his head, he grins, before dashing towards Yash and attempting to lift him off the ground in a bear hug. Machop tries to grapple Yash! AC4: jYysHBrZ1d20, Combat check: 3d6+2 contested by Yash's Combat or Athletics 1d20·3d6+2

Yash quickly squirms away from the machop's arms, hitting the floor with a roll to get some space before preparing to once again throw himself head first at the enemy. Benji grabs the small bead carved in Yash's likeness and considers using his protective charm before deciding not to. If this is supposed to be a duel, he should not intervene. Especially if he can use the pokemon... "Yash, don't Strike. Sand Attack instead, please!" Benji orders, already taking the capture device from his backpack, as Yash grunts before begrudgingly turning around to dig a small hole, showering the machop with dirt and debris. Actions: Yash uses Sand Attack. Sand Attack! Accuracy Check: MyFWCHC41d20 vs. AC 2. Effect: The target is blinded until the end of its next turn. 1d20

Benji watches as the machop evades the sand attack and actually succeeds in grabbing Yash. It works somewhat well, though, because the pokemon stands stills as it tries to hold the struggling yungoos, and it's awfully close to Yash's mouth. With a loud growl, Yash grinds his teeth and a spark erupts as he bites down, a goust of flame burning the area around his mouth. Benji drops the pokeball in surprise. Actions: Yash uses Fire Fang. Fire Fang! Accuracy Check: SCkeGiRS1d20 vs. AC 3. Damage: 2d6+21 Physical, Normal damage. Effect: Fire Fang burns or flinches on 18-19, and burns AND flinches on 20. 1d20·2d6+21

The Machop recoils from the flames, a large blister forming where Yash had bitten it, and lets go of Yash in surprise and pain. Still standing in combat ready for a moment, it sighs, lowers its arms, sits down, and taps the ground, forfeiting the fight.

Robin rolls her eyes a little as she steps forward. "Yeah, I get that, Jeannie, but there's one thing you're forgetting - if we fail at talking, we can still switch to fighting. If we fail at fighting, talking's probably not an option. I reckon if it's available, talking's a better thing to start off with, huh? Besides, who knows what kinda people and 'mon you might meet with it."
Without waiting for a response or a counter-argument, she strolls forward around the corner, stepping lightly but still not really sneaking, until she gets reasonably close to the two pokemon. "Hey there!" she says in a low, gentle voice - not quite whispering, but keeping her tone quiet and non-threatening. "Hope you don't mind the interruption, but I heard you working and I was wondering what you were looking for. Maybe I can help." She gives a small shrug to indicate her lack of expertise, but willingness to do what she can.

Jean-Marie walks behind Robin, happy to let him do the talking. She waves awkwardly at the startled Ground types.

The two Pokémon spin around as Robin approaches and starts talking, both of them raising their claws in defence. At her words, they seem to calm down slightly - the Drilbur more reluctantly than the Sandshrew - and listen to her speak. At her question, the Drilbur seems to scoff, somewhat annoyed, and strikes its metallic claws together, causing some sparks to fly off. It glances at the wall at the end of the tunnel, which has several fresh marks on it, before looking back at Robin, and rolling its eyes.
The Sandshrew startles for a moment at the sparks, before copying the Drilbur, focusing for a moment and striking its now metallic claws together, slightly less aggressively. It then, awkwardly, waves back at Jean-Marie.

Benji watches as the machop recoils and eventually forfeits the battle, sighing as he grabs the pokéball back from the floor and puts it away. "I'm sorry for that," he says, approaching the fighting pokémon as he grabs something from his bag. "I didn't really know Yash could do that. Here, have a drink." He says, offering the machop a bottle of water. He then sits on the floor and calls Yash to come to him. The yungoos is still alert but comes, sitting across Benji's legs. "You know, you probably shouldn't hold back next time. Yash challenged you, so he would have to accept defeat if it came to that," he says, partially to reprimand his own pokémon. "But thanks for going easy on us. I bet you can tell we don't have much experience."He turns to Orianne and Sapphite next. "You guys ok? What about the little one?" he asks them, gesturing towards the unconscious meditite across from them. Mechanics Benji is offering the machop one of his Enriched Waters

The Machop plops down next to Benji, happily accepting the bottled water. He shrugs a bit at Benji's words, grinning sheepishly. "Cho chop mach!"
He waves a bit dismissively at the Meditite, seemingly not too concerned for her recovery. And indeed, seemingly out of sheer spite, the Meditite is picking herself off of the floor, slowly rising to her feet, trembling slightly and clutching her shoulder. Scowling for a moment at Sapphire, the Meditite limps off to a corner and sits down, ignoring the rest, seemingly meditating.

Orianne moved toward the now-conscious Pokémon.
“You fought really hard. It’s good to have a tough challenge to keep Sapphire from getting too much ego. Here... think of it as a thank you for the sparring.”
She applied one of her potions to the meditite.
