"Sounds good to me," Robin says as she steps closer to Jean-Marie. "Scenic as these mines are, the rocks aren't the best conversationalists, you know? Least, I'm guessing not til you've stayed here way longer than I'm planning to. Then again, guess we'll see when we meet these guys, huh?"

"These side tunnels are too tight for all of us to stack up. We'll go left..." Orianne gave a hand movement to Sapphire to turn down the left side tunnel, trying to keep the cat's hunting focus and element of surprise as they moved.

Benji looks around as the others seem to get ready to split up, quickly picking a side. "Well, I won't let Orianne go alone, I guess," he says moving behind the girl but still looking at the others.
"These tunnels don't seem to meet again," he speaks to both groups, "so what do you, guys, say we meet back here in... say... 2 hours? Oh, and let me..." he quickly takes his pokedex and, with quick fingers, sends the pictures of the map to everyone's devices. "There! Try to keep around the green zones, right?" he finally says, moving along to follow Orianne down the left tunnel.

Vess contemplates her pokeball for a long time, before nodding to herself, snapping out of it. She follows the other through the barren caves, frowning slightly. Barren mines in a failed venture for riches... felt a bit close to home.
As they come to the split in the path she shrugs following Jean-Marie towards the group of people. "Don't know what people expected to find in these mines... seems like there was never anything of value here."

Groups decided, the five of you split up into two smaller groups. Jean-Marie, Robin, and Vess head right, and Orianne and Benji head left.
Jean-Marie, Robin, Vess
You head deeper into the tunnel, the main path still mostly empty of Pokémon barring the occasional Geodude. You pass the occasional side path, narrow cracks in the cave walls, all of them dead ends according to the map Benji shared. It doesn't take long for Robin and Vess to pick up on the clanging noises Jean-Marie had heard earlier, as they become louder and clearer the deeper you get. As the sounds becomes louder, the three of you realise that it seems faster than you'd expect from a pickaxe or similar tool, a double burst of sounds followed by a slight delay. A couple of minutes of walking, the sounds steadily growing stronger, you come across the side tunnel from which the sounds seem to originate. The mouth and walls of the tunnel seem originally smooth and man made, but they have been picked at at several locations.
Orianne & Benji With Sapphire prowling a couple of steps ahead of you, the two of you head deeper into the left tunnel, hoping to find whoever is working there. Ori, you need to call off Sapphire a couple of times from attacking several bats that are simply minding their own business, but you still make steady progress, and it doesn't take too long before you find the side path where the grunting noises seem to originate from. From here, you can hear what seem to be two different voices making the noises, paired with constant thudding sounds. The tunnel is wide and obviously man made. Sapphire's ears perk up at the noises, and she is already heading into the tunnel.

As they near the source of the sounds, Robin turns to the others with an impish grin. "So, I'm thinking we sneak up and go boo!" she whispers, clearly excited about the childish prank, befors sighing, "but, as you probably figured, I ain't too dressed to go unseen. Anyone else interested?"

Benji tries to ignore Sapphire's attempts at the bats as they move, studying the map to make sure he is not lost. He's decided to make notes as they move so he knows where they are at all times. Yash is content around his neck, but as soon as the noise gets closer and the meowth becomes more alert, the yungoos drops down to the floor and shares the lead with the feline.
Making a quick note on the bend they are about to take, Benji turns to Orianne as they walk forward. "Do you think these people need help?" he asks, trying not to sound like an ass. "I'm not sure any of us is really suited for mining work..."

"I'm going to guess that it's not even people. The historian said that mining was basically all done long ago, didn't he?" Orianne keeps an eye on Sapphire, to ensure the doesn't stray too far or attack anything unnecessarily.

Jean-Marie contracts Robin's contagious grin, adopting a slightly crouched position.
"Oooh yes, I can go on ahead and check them out." She slinks off deeper into the tunnel.

Jean-Marie, while your two friends remain waiting outside the tunnel, you slink in, quietly making your way into the small tunnel. As you go deeper, you notice two things. One, the crouch you adopted starts become more necessary to move around, as the tunnel becomes lower than expected, and two, the floor of the tunnel is covered in fine gravel. After only a minute of stealthing, you round a corner and spot the end of the tunnel, as well as a pair of small Pokémon, who seem to be deeply focused as they both chop away at the cave wall with their claws. One of the Pokémon is a round, with a yellow-brown, almost scaled, skin, and the other is standing more upright, with pronounced claws and blue and dark grey fur. Neither of them seem to have noticed you yet.

Benji considers that for a second. "Humm, that's true. So... You think it's a pokémon, then? Should we get ready for another fight?" he asks, appreciating the fact his pokémon seemed prepared for that already.
He starts looking more carefully around as they approach the grunting sound, a pokeball in one hand and the pokedex in the other.

Benji, as you move into the side tunnel, following Yash and Sapphire, you quickly find the tunnel isn't too long, and ends in a small round cave with a surprisingly smooth floor. You spot two humanoid Pokémon sparring. One of them has a grey skin, awkwardly long limbs, and three yellow crests on its head. The other has a blue and white skin, is lean, and has an onion-shaped head.
Both Yash and Sapphire seem to have stopped, posture still battle ready, but wary, both of them recognising dangerous fighting types when they see them.
A couple of moments after you arrive, the two fighters notice you, halt their sparring and face you, seemingly taking you in, but not going on the offensive yet.

Jean-Marie whips out her Pokedex and scans the pair as covertly as possible, being sure to put the device on mute.

Neither of the 'Mon seem to notice you scanning them, and both continue their digging.
For the Sandshrew, your Pokédex reads:
Sandshrew, the Mouse Pokémon. It has a thick, durable skin, that it uses to withstand attacks. It prefers burrowing in dry ground, and is highly adapted to live in arid locations.
For the Drilbur, your Pokédex reads:
Drilbur, the Mole Pokémon. It can dig through soil at high speeds by holding its claws together and spinning like a drill. It likes to sharpen its hard, metallic claws on rocky surfaces.

Jean-Marie puts her 'dex away, silently resolving to catch the little brown one. She returns to the other trainers to report back her findings.
"There are two adorable little burrowing Pokemon up ahead, a Sandshrew and a..." She briefly checks her 'dex history to remind herself "Drilbur. You guys want to try and catch them? I am partial to the Sandshrew, if neither of you are interested."

Robin shakes his head. "Nah, I'm good without either. Little surprised, though - had you pegged for a Dark specialist and..." he pauses as he catches sight of the Sandshrew on the 'dex's screen. "...and I don't care - catch that cutie and make it happy."

"Huh... did we interrupt their practice?" Orianne retrieved her 'dex and attempted to scan both of the pokemon, as they appeared non-hostile. At least at the moment.

The two Pokémon lean back in a defensive stance for a moment when Ori scans them, but quickly calm down.
For the Machop, your Dex says:
Machop, the Superpower Pokémon. Its muscles never get sore, no matter how much it trains. It is skilled in every form of martial arts.
For the Meditite, your Dex says:
Meditite, the Meditate Pokémon. It trains deep in mountains and caves, eating very little. The hunger helps it reach a heightened state of focus.

Benji hears Orianne's pokédex's entries with interest before answering her question. "I think they are waiting for us to challenge them or something. They seem quite... honorable? Maybe they want to duel." he says, watching the fighting pokémon carefully. "Not sure if we want that though. I mean... They have an advantage, right?"
While Benji considers the possibility, waiting for Orianne to answer, Yash takes position ready for a fight, facing the machop but still holding back. Barely.

Sapphire yowled in response to the perceived backing down from a challenge. Orianne held up a hand, as if to quiet her.
"You want to fight because it's challenging. I can respect that Sapph... We wouldn't be doing this if we didn't want to overcome challenges and push ourselves. You can go." Orianne swung her hand from it's paused position toward the circular room.
