You stand before the tower on the cliff, inside of which lives the wise sage ready to send you forth on your journey. What awaits you is an epic adventure, travels across perilous mountains and lush forests, encounters with strange, fantastical creatures and just as strange and fantastical people. You will learn, grow, experience, and discover as you explore this land with your friends and partners.
For now though, you have been given an invitation, and you have a meeting to attend.
Welcome, gentle folk and other beings, to the Breomé Region, a wild and mountainous region, left mostly untamed between the patches of civilisation that mark the various cities and towns that dot the land. Breomé is a land of opposites, being home both to strange, supernatural occurrences and occult practices, and cutting edge technology development and deep scientific research.
Although in the past the Breomé region was home to its own Pokémon League and Gym Circuit, these have been disbanded 20 years ago, when the actions of the criminal organisation known as Team Dusk left the region bereft of most of its high skilled trainers, including most Gym Leaders, all members of the Elite Four, and the Champion.
As a result of this, and the general wariness of people returning to traveling around the region, the economy of the region took a crash, some cities more so than others, and it has only been in recent years that things have started picking up again, with Trainers once more heading out on their journeys around the region, if not to gather badges, than to explore and experience the fantastic wilds that Breomé has to offer.
This is where you come into play. You’ll be playing as a newly licensed Pokémon Trainer (or you will be getting your license at the start of the game, at any rate), heading out in a group of fellow, fresh-faced Trainers to explore the region, catch Pokémon, battle other Trainers, meet new people, and along the way, work to accomplish any other goals you have set yourself.
For a more detailed overview of the Breomé region, as well as an explanation of the role of Trainers in the post-League society, and a listing of cities, towns, and a small number of mountains and forests, see this document.
The Basics
Hello, all! I’m Har (also known as the Harbringer of Insanity, Harb, Insanity, and a couple of other monikers) and I’ll be your GM for this game. As you may have gathered from the introduction, this game will take place in the Breomé region, a homebrew region of my own devising, which I have been working on and off again for the past four or so years. In effect, the game I intend to run in this region comes down to a Gym Crawl with the rather unique twist that there are no Gyms to speak off.
What this means for you, potential players, is that the motivations, drives, and goals that set the story in motion will be coming primarily from your own characters, with me mostly providing a backdrop for your characters to interact with. I will be tying together backgrounds, building forth from what you give me, providing plots, threats, allies, and enemies that you may or may not wish to interact with, but this will not be a game where I tell my own story that your characters happen to play their parts in.
This game will be about your characters, their goals and drives, their history and their future. I ask that you provide a solid reason for your character to travel the region, goals that they wish to attain, objectives that they my strive for, leads that they may wish to follow up on, things they want to explore.
The Character
We will be making use of DataNinja’s PTU 1.05.5 compilation, found here, as well as the Trainer Level Squish revision (also found on that page), the sheet of which can be found here. Joining the A Midnight Journey is required. We will be using these to discuss characters, ask questions and any other OOC chatter that may occur.
Your character will start at level 1. Books allowed are Core, Playtests, Game of Throhs (for Elementalists, note homebrew), and the Jailbreaker Researcher branch from DPDOM.
You will start with a single underdog, multi-stage Pokémon starting at level 10. This Pokémon may start with a single Egg move, or Tutor move if the Pokémon doesn’t have an Egg move list (or, with my permission, if the Egg move list is particularly sparse), which will be put on the Inheritance list if it does not meet tutor restrictions. You may give your Pokémon a Skill Background, though I ask that you do not abuse this. No pseudo-legendaries.
Your character starts with $5000, but this cannot be used to buy Pokéballs, TMs, Potions or other medicines before the game starts. You will be receiving a Pokédex, 5 Basic Balls, 3 Potions, and 2 bandages at the start of the game. You need not spend all your money before the game starts.
You gain a free edge, for which you must still meet the usual qualifications, from the following list.
Homebrew rules
Your character must be between 15 and 19 years old, and must have been born in Breomé, although they need not necessarily have grown up there. The game will start off in Pyrite Town, with your character having been invited to meet with Professor Elder, the region’s Pokémon Professor.
As this will be a narrative, character-driven, roleplay-heavy game, you must provide a roleplay sample with your application.
