Right then! First thing's first; the Professor of Ancient Language. Stan browsed through his documents for a brief moment for the location of Mr. Heel's tent, taking a brisk pace. He likely had precious few moments before Merchant's attempt at breaking the ice.

Stan gets to the tent he's seeking within a minute. The side of this green tent is inlaid with a large canvas "12", but otherwise identical on the outside. To his relief, there is light on the inside.
When he steps inside, he sees the light comes from several lamps at the back end of the tent, seemingly stacked over a wide desk only two feet off the floor, behind and to the sides; no traces of darkness can be found in here. A researcher in a brown-canvas jacket and tied-up black hair, presumably Dr. Penny, is seated there studying various documents in all sorts of languages spread across her desk. There's tons of other small bookshelves lining the perimeter of this tent, and two cushions on the floor on the other side of her desk for visitors.
As Stan pushes the flap aside, she looks up from the various documents she was studying, pushing her thin-frame glasses up with one hand as she does so. "Hello... can I help you?"

Wow, these are a lot of books. It's so cozy in here! And bright; it almost felt as if they weren't in a deep underground cavern.
...
Oh yes, business! Stan takes out a small page of notes regarding the book and passes it to the Professor before making an introduction. "Stan Pinkerton, of the expedition crew. There's been a small incident that we need your knowledge to solve. In particular, your knowledge of language. There's a paranormal... thing... going on in the castle that has one of the others trapped; the secret to getting out might involve identifying where he is. Like Carmen Sandliego!"
Stan hoped the question of why Merchant was stuck in a book, or how this was considered normal and not crazy, didn't pop up.
"Err... that is to say, I need help identifying a culture by the language in the names. Can you help me with this? It's very important."

Dr. Penny's face shifts to a confused look as Stan explains the situation. It grows even more confused as she looks over the notes.
"I can help you... but there are some things in here that are immediately concerning..." She takes out a highlighter, and drags it over the word 'Viridia Village', along with several other lines.
"One that didn't know any better would think this is a story about ancient Kanto, because of Viridian City, but it is not... Viridian was founded as a settlement north of the Town of Pallet, at the foot of the Silver Mountains, not in the middle of a green field... if your friend was, um, trapped there, the language and dialect would not exactly match his, keeping him from communicating easily, but that does not appear to be the case... there is no record of an Earth Festival in any written accounts of Kanto's history, oratory or otherwise... and most importantly, there was never a time in Viridian's birth that Pokemon were not close to humans..."
She passes Stan back the notes. "Therefore, I must conclude that this has no attachment to the history of Viridian City... considering the lack of historical support, I would think it to be a children's story..."

A children's story? Oh dear, that's not good. Children's stories practically live outside the realm of facts and logic; there wasn't any kind of research guaranteed to stick!
"I see. Well then, thank you for your aid. Sorry for disturbing your study; I'll be on my way."
Stan leaves the tent, a bit bummed out at the lack of results. One tent out and he'd already exhausted all of his resources. These two tents were all his resources right? The office monkey double checked his list of residents again to confirm. History was out, which means his other stop might as well be ignored. No point when dating customs could be anything and everything with no way of knowing which is right.
But wait! Fourth row fourth column; Willis McQueen, Specializing in ANCIENT MUSIC! He might have nothing to offer Merchant, but maybe if he pulled a few historically well-received songs he might be able to help the songwriter directly! It was worth a shot at least. Without skipping a beat, Stan rushed to the music tent in search of a song. Hopefully the professor had a book or two he wouldn't mind parting with...

Stan finds and enters tent 19, and predictably, he can hear classical music coming from inside before he even opens the flap. Inside, two lamps in the back corners illuminate a large chalkboard, at which Dr. McQueen is erratically writing down notes and rhythms, adorned with strange symbols and jargon Stan would have to hire a translator to decode for him. Other than that, this tent is... relatively clean. Three uncomfortable-looking black plastic chairs are lined up in front of the board, vacant, and a pouch of papers hangs from the side of the board as well, lined with black symbols similar to the ones in chalk. An old-timey radio on the floor is the source of the classical music, and it is surprisingly loud; unbearably so inside.
Dr. McQueen doesn't hear Stan until he's already in the middle of the tent, and jumps in surprise at him. "Oh, you startle me! I vas not expecting to be visited on ze virst day so early in, ja?" He turns his radio down a bit, quiet enough for a conversation to take place. "So vat do you need? Have you discovered any ancient pieces for me to decipher, hmmmm?"

"Actually, the opposite."
Stan goes through the process of explaining the situation by hand this time, rather than providing his notes. Might as well get the whole camp informed as soon as possible; who knows if they need to actually TAKE anyone into this book world in the future. Informing the researchers what was inside the caverns was also his job... kindof...
"...long story short, Merchant is trapped in a storybook with a songwriter. We need a love song for him to use as a possible bargaining chip to help the story reach a conclusion, which might help him escape. I can't offer you might right now, HOWEVER, I do not come empty handed. The person Merchant currently associates with in the story is a songwriter of unknown origin you see. It may be possible to exchange a song you provide for an unheard song he can provide in exchange."
"Like a music trade! With Merchant as a middle man, I'm sure he can work out a good deal for anything you're willing to provide."

Dr. McQueen nods along, as if the story made perfect sense to him.
"I see! Vell! Let me peruse my files..." Without skipping a beat, Dr. McQueen runs behind his chalkboard, to what is apparently a filing cabinet. He opens the drawer... it is long. Absurdly long. He takes a minute to flick through the pieces in perfect order, finally giving a shout as he finds the 'perfect' song.
"Here you are!" He hands a yellowed copy of a song to Stan. "Sveriges Medeltida Gallader! An old Kalosian volk song! Zis a piano arrangevent wvth vocal accompaniment listed at ze bottom. Iv who you are trading vith is a true connoisseur, they vil be ENCHANTED BEYOND ALL RECOGNIZION!"

Wonderful! Fantastic! A powerful work of period! This was sure to- oh dear this is a rather large piece how was he going to write this into the book?
"Thank you sir! You'll be the first to know how this turns out! I'll see what I can do about getting this to Merchant in the meantime."
Likely easier said than done; Stan knew there was no way he would be able to accurately recreate these music notes, and certainly not with a single page for communication! Think, what options are there? There's going in and directly handing the page off to Merchant, though that would be sure to both cut off support and get TWO stuck in the storybook world. Stapling it to the communication page? Might work, though it would surely make the book look messy. Not to mention if one side removed their copy...
Hmm, Merchant seemed to have all of his belongings when he went into the storybook world. Perhaps adding them to his person here would add it to his person there? It was worth a shot at least. The office monkey made a dash back to the pyramid, scribbling a small note for Merchant along his trek back to where the sleeping painter lied.
"Merchant, it's Stan again. I acquired something to help your escape; sheet music for a well-recieved folk song! Hiraku might have the skill to play this piece, which in turn might help to bring his story to a close and get you out."
"Willis McQueen from the camp gave us this, and would like another song in exchange. Hiraku is a songwriter; can you arrange a trade? I'm sure Professor McQueen would appreciate any additional pieces beyond the first that you can acquire."
