"Yeah, that's what I'm worried about. That it might not fully be shielded, given that it has to be portable," he grumbles. "Things are never as easy as in lab conditions."
The Magnemite fixes its lone eye on the Pokedex, floating up and down and around to follow the movement of the device.
"If you're willing to get rid of it for me, be my guest," the scientist continues. "I'm... not really that great of a Trainer. This guy here," he scritches the Raichu's head, and it chrrs, "was a gift from my girlfriend. She's the Trainer in the family. He just keeps me company when I'm out and about." He looks a little abashed. "I... did try to catch it before. Just to get it out of my way. Didn't work. The few balls I had broke."
If Bea didn't know better, she would swear that there's almost a little bit of magnetic laughter coming from the Magnemite.

"I've taken a shine to your friend, I'll give it a chance to join me." Snapping her Pokedex closed, she slipped it into one of her coat pockets and out of sight, showing off the Pokeball. "You clearly know what these are, but maybe not what they are for, mmm? It is a place to rest when you get tired, to hide when you need safety. A means to travel with me, we can make it a battle if you insist, but I'm not really one to strong-arm others, so what do you say to becoming my research assistant? I don't have any electronics other then my 'Dex, and those are just about as idiot-proof as it gets."

The magnetic ball spins its arms around, and floats circling around Bea, its single ocular staring unblinkingly at her. It nudges at the Pokéball a little, as though pondering, before backing away, and flitting around... and it seems like it might be trying to just test her patience before it eventually zips to the front of the ball, and taps it, getting sucked in to a resounding click. You caught a Magnemite! Level: 10 Nature: Quirky Gender: None Ability: Sturdy Moves: Tackle, Supersonic, Thunder Shock, Thunder Wave The man breathes a sigh of relief. "Ah, thanks for that," he says. "Was getting rather annoying, and I wasn't sure how I was going to ditch it. Persistent little nuisance. Hopefully it doesn't prove to be too much hassle for you."

"I'm sure we'll get along just fine." She assured him with a hand against her midsection and a half bow. She considered the Pokeball for a moment, then the water Pokemon splashing about. The PokeDex had detailed Magnemite as an Electric and Steel typed Pokemon, which meant it served her purposes well enough against Flying and Rock types, to assist her bugs. It's temperament was of interest to her too, but she would get to know it better later in the evening when she had settled. Another capture wasn't necessary right now, she had already accomplished what she'd come to do. Still, the bouncy ball Pokemon did draw her attention. Life wasn't about necessities, those were the lowest level of Maslow's Heirarchy. She had her basic needs readily met by the League, she could have a minute for fun. Ah, it was fairies. Those are supposedly fun, but very impractical. Curiosity sated, she backtracked to Oldale town as the sun began the lazy creep towards the horizon. Plenty of warm summer day left to enjoy, but she had plenty to record in her notes for morning, and a lab assistant to get acquainted with. Not to mention the matter with the really, very strange egg. Having eaten not an hour earlier, she settles on a snack before bed, note-taking, and, privacy provided, more observation of her strange find.

The egg doesn't seem yet content to reveal its secrets to Bea, but it does seem to be fine being around with her Pokémon. Thankfully, there's a room that's empty at least for now that she's able to commandeer and spread out a little in. Most people are still outside, enjoying the sun.
Her Magnemite seems similarly intrigued by the golden thing, staring at itself from all angles in the reflective surface, and moving occasionally as if to nudge it before any chastising occurs.
Unfortunately, the privacy doesn't last forever, and later in the night, the door to the room opens. In the time it takes for her to briefly glance up at the noise, the egg has once more vanished as a handful of tired Trainers enter to collapse on the beds. No more scientific inquiries for the night.
The morning comes soon enough, though, and with it promises of potential. Or something. Mornings aren't very good at keeping promises. It's a nice day for Training though, including with the new arrival... though the Steel-type seems to be more curious about the bugs than the other way around, at least after Tempu finishes peering at himself in the orb's polished surface.
She could stick around Oldale for another little while, maybe check to see if any new Pokémon are around route 102, or maybe route 101 now that the new Trainer rush has probably passed, or head out to 103 towards Petalburg. Leaving right away will probably get there by sundown after a good long day of walking, or doing something else first will mean camping'll have to be done.

It didn't seem to mind her Pokemon, but other humans caused it to just blip out of existence. The more thought she put to the egg, the more it stumped her. It was real, she had touched, smelled, and seen it. Tasting it was right out, she didn't know where it had been and licking strange objects was strictly prohibited. Maybe she'd change her mind if she got desperate. She scribbled notes for the remaining hours until bed. One journal kept her observations about the egg and her new partner, the other the activities of the day, her thoughts and emotions on the flight, the first few routes, and Oldale.
Training was light exercise, and a few rounds of 'I-Spy'. Honing her Pokemon's reaction speeds, and attentiveness by urging them to find the object or place around the area that she is looking for. Solenoid is a bit difficult to work with at first, apparently easily distracted, but entertains the exercises to understand what it going on. She makes it a learning exercise, as she often does. After the round of training, she has a light breakfast and considers the clouds. It's another nice summer day. Petalburg waited, and she was amidst the gaggle of trainers making their way away from Littleroot to join the league.
Grass would be tricky, with powder attacks and recovery at its disposal, but her Pokemon did well enough against the type, two of the three being strong against attacks, and two possessing potentially super-effective moves. There had been no sign of anything leading to or away from the egg the day before. If she could locate the same spot again, perhaps venturing deeper off the trail would be a wise recourse. By that same token, perhaps the parent followed the same rules the egg did? It only appeared when it wanted to appear and not before. It was a sound hypothesis. Eggs didn't usually exhibit special abilities or traits to begin with, but it stood to reason that those abilities might persist into 'proper' life.
After all, eggs didn't just 'happen', it had to have come from somewhere.
No, once more, south to route 101. There had to be something she missed, and she'd take the extra time to look around, even if that meant camping (which was awful).

The trek back down route 101 feels a lot longer than the walk up, but that's probably because she's retracing her steps. Unfortunately, the egg was found fairly close to the Littleroot area, so it's almost all the way back to the other town she goes.
Thankfully, it's not really that far, though. And soon enough, she finds herself back at what she thinks is the area. Peering in... yep, there's the stump that the egg was on, and there's still no sign of any tracks on the ground. There is a Pokémon around, though. Standing on the stump, staring at her, is a small red-and-white bird. It lets out a peep as it sees her, before continuing to hop around, pecking for bugs and seeds probably. It seems highly unlikely that this bird left the egg, though, primarily due to the fact that the egg is far, far larger than the bird in question.
Going deeper beyond the path, Bea does notice some light tracks, but none really get close to where the stump area is. They seem to be more along the lines of herbivores munching around for plants, or carnivores stalking and chasing said herbivores. There's also no signs of gold shards or anything around that might match the egg, or indicate another or who it might belong to.

The trip back had ultimately ended up a waste of time thusly. There was a concern she might not actually be the correct brand of learned for this sort of thing. Maybe she needed someone versed in pseudoscience, such as cryptozoology or other paranormal fields. With the item in question being known and visible to only her it might even be a very vivid hallucination, or a mental object implanted there by a Psychic-Type Pokemon.
Wild field theories aside, now, camping was to be her punishment tonight for choosing to investigate further. Admittedly she knew not everything could be pleasant times indoors with a roof over her head, but there was so much that could go wrong outside. Might as well make the best of the trip south.
Bug-type Pokemon were rarely carnivores despite being territorial, Beatrice decided to make the best of a bad situation, and went searching out the local herbivores amidst the brush. She released Solenoid to observe, since it liked that, taking a moment to explain to it what they were doing here. It was kind of like talking to a camera, and she liked it. Practicing for live interviews!

Most of the Pokémon around seem to be fairly skittish, just rustling away through the brush, leaving only glimpses of striped fur or flashes of wings. Eventually, though, she comes upon a bit of a clearing, with flowers growing in. Flitting around are some spherical fuzzy bugs, drifting from flower to flower, as well as a green deer that abruptly looks up at the noise and freezes up staring at Bea.

Nectar feeding insects carried symbiotic relationships with the flowers they fed on, the fluff helping them carry pollen from bloom to bloom. Not normally one for 'cute', she found their shining eyes and delicate wings endearing. They seemed surprisingly carefree. Retrieving her Dex from her pocket, she made eye contact with the small cervine and similarly froze.
If the Dex's rather loud chime and proclamation startled it off, it might disturb the Pokemon that had caught her attention. Deciding that was a risk she was willing to take, she scanned the adorable floating blobs of greenish yellow fluff with their delicate limbs and waited for the machine to respond.

The chime does indeed startle the deer off, the creature bolting quickly, but it doesn't seem to bother the insects that much. They just flutter around to a different flower, getting away from the Deerling's path.
"Cutiefly," reads Bea's 'Dex "the Bee Fly Pokémon. It feeds on the nectar and pollen of flowers. Because it's able to sense auras, it can identify which flowers are about to bloom. Myriads of Cutiefly flutter above the heads of people who have auras resembling those of flowers, which tends to happen when people are excited and full of energy."
The insects don't seem to be all that bothered by her presence, perhaps sensing that she isn't going to hurt them. Or maybe they just don't care.

"Auras?" Beatrice mused for a moment. Superstitious emanations of the soul or something to that effect. Did flowers have souls? It was true that there were things that human eyes could perceive, that a Pokemon's might, but the nature of the soul itself seemed ludicrous. Clearing her throat softly, she followed one of the fluffy bee-flys from flower to flower. "So if you are drawn to the flowers by some external force, do they taste better freshly bloomed? Or does it just help you find the patch in the first place, an ample food source for a period of time going forward?"
A sneeze, and she rubbed her nose, allergies were terrible. "Chuu! The Dex says you are part fairy type, but you don't seem nearly so... chaotic? Maybe that is what I can attribute your unusual senses too. At any rate, I've decided you'll be coming with me. As a Pokemon who lives on flowers, you would probably be well suited to the Petalburg Gym."

Unfortunately, the bug Bea's following isn't actually able to answer any of her questions, on account of not speaking her language. She's half-feeling that it might be ignoring her, as it focusses on the flowers that it's sipping out of, before eventually turning to face her, hovering up to look directly into her face with shining eyes.
It makes a bit of a beeping-buzzing trill noise, as though questioning her certainty. She remembers the 'Dex saying that they're attracted to people who're excited and full of energy, so maybe it's just finding her a little dull right now.

"Well now that I have your attention and can get a good look at you!" Bea exclaimed, looking over the Cutiefly closely. "Let's see... No apparent social structure, food based motivations, head, thorax and abdomen seem to be a single fuzzy structure. No evident segmentation in the legs or proboscis." As she took in the parts of the whole she was warming up to the insect more and more. "Strange, shining eyes, still appear compound in a fashion."
Tapping her cheek a couple of times with a gloved finger, she leaned back and considered the bug a moment more. "Bombyliidae! Bylii for short I think!" She exclaimed proudly. "Cause you are on the roundish side! We can settle it with a battle if you want, but I think you are a valuable asset!"

The bug seems to giggle a bit as she gets more and more animated. It seems to consider, before spraying a light amount of glitter in her face with another giggle, and hovers a little bit out of reach - but also isn't fleeing away. This is probably the Fairy side coming out, if she'd have to guess. And that probably means that it wants a little more excitement before it agrees to come with her.

"Alright, we'll do it Grandma's way, I'll catch you with my bare hands first." The girl knew she was awful, but it wanted to play so this might be the way to go about it. "I'm gonna get you~" Beatrice tromped slowly towards it at first, hands up, before making a lunge for the Pokemon and summarily chasing it around the field of flowers until she was thoroughly winded.

The bug bobs and weaves, as the other Cutieflies scatter to less trample-risking fields, until eventually she's able to clasp it in her hands. She's not quite sure if she caught it and tired it out, or if it let itself be caught, but, regardless, the soft ball of fuzz is in her hands now, and buzzing happily. It's an... unorthodox way of doing capture, but, it seems to have worked. Probably.

"Iiii gotcha...!" She cried out breathlessly, brushing stray strands of her now wildly out of place hair out of her face (and moutb). "Now are you going to join me or do I..." wheeze "Have to rough you up a little?" She asks playfully, producing a Pokeball. "I wonder why you are called a fly bee if you don't have a stinger?" Beatrice mused to herself, holding the Pokemon up level with the offered ball.

The Cutiefly flutters in front of her, helping to brush some of the loose strands aside - though, it's not the best at it due to its small size, and its wings and fluff tickles - before making its way towards the ball, where it lightly taps the sphere with one of its legs, before getting sucked inside. You caught a Cutiefly! Level: 10 Nature: Cuddly Gender: Female Moves: Absorb, Fairy Wind, Stun Spore, Struggle Bug; Powder @ 30 Abilities: Shield Dust

"Well Bylii," Beatrice scratched where the fluff had tickled her, it was actually kind of nice. She didn't mind contact with her Pokemon, it just wasn't anything to write home about most of the time. The bits of glitter on her skin would wash off (hopefully), and her trip south while not advancing her scientific pursuits, had made some more distance between her and the pack of trainers forced marching on Petalburg.
The girl wondered how the gym leaders dealt with the constant barrage of people coming to beat up their friends and partners. They must have vast repositories of Pokemon at their disposal to draw from, to prevent health and injury complications a standard six Pokemon team would suffer under similar circumstances. A late lunch in town, then it was off into Route 103 for an afternoon of fresh air, retiring just after dusk, sometime around nine thirty or ten, presumably. Enough time to make up her bedroll.
