Mayu doesn't need to be a hybrid to understand that. Nor does Alpha. She gestures, and he starts the bout off with a flying punch.

Heracross counter-attacks! Alpha loses 50 HP. Ha ha! Weren't expecting your own move to be used against you, eh?

Oooof. That's pretty rough, yeah. Alpha would be annoyed by this bug stealing his schtick, but he's a little too busy feeling dazed right now. Okay then, let's try hitting a little lighter, make sure that doesn't happen again...

There's no dodging this attack, but Alpha catches it on crossed arms, blunting its force to almost nothing. Then he answers by mimicking the Heracross's technique right back at it.

Heracross can't seem to take what it dishes out. Despite this, it takes Alpha down with it using another counter-attack like before.
Alpha loses 86 HP (heracross 2x weak to flying). Heracross faints immediately after having taken 64 damage.
Mayu earns 19 Poke XP.

Mayu recalls Alpha (from the look of it, he's going to be out for quite a while) and... hm. No Pokeball for Heracross, and while it's not so big that she couldn't lift it at all, she doesn't think she could carry it very far. She sends out Lambda, and after soothing the Tropius - who is skittish in the presence of a large, herbivorous bug - and securing Heracross on her back, heads back toward Cerulean's Poke Center.
When she arrives, she hands over Alpha's ball as usual, and informs the nurse that while Heracross is wild she would like it healed nonetheless, if possible.

Nurse Joy calmly produces a Temp Ball and 'captures' the Heracross for easy healing. As per usual, she is required to inform Mayu that once released from the ball, Heracross will be wild again and the ball itself rendered unusable. As Mayu is the one who brought this Heracross in, she is in charge of what to do with it. Whether that be convincing it to join her team or releasing it back into the Wild. Either way, both Pokemon are healed in less than ten minutes and returned to her.

Mayu thanks the nurse perfunctorily, and heads back out to Route 24 before releasing the Heracross. "That was a close fight. You would be welcome to accompany me on my journey, if you so choose."

Heracross seems amenable to the idea. It's certainly not getting any major challenges in the wild.
Heracross is Male, level 19, Bashful, with Guts.

Excellent. New Pokemon in tow, Mayu heads north, meandering towards Route 25.

Just before Route 25, Mayu is startled by a Bug Catcher who comes crashing out of the woods. After a few moments of awkward silence, in which nothing notable happens (why were they running then?), they challenge Mayu to a 2v2 fight. A weird, "armored" bug starts the show.

Mayu is nonplussed by this, but sure, she's up for a fight if they want. She sends out Sigma, who predictably starts the match with a burst of fire.

Sigma is about to unleash more fire, but -
"Back," Mayu orders, and the fox obediently turns about and dashes away.
(Sprinting away, ends up 9 squares further away from Shelmet. Provokes an AoO)

Shelmet takes a swipe at Sigma, then pouts as its energy stores are wasted on empty air. It would love to get closer, but it's oh so slow. By the time it got in range, that mean ol' fire fox would have torched it again.

Bug Catcher recalls Shelmet, declaring it defeated as it wasn't going to handle another hit anyway. In its place is a cute lil' crab-like thing carrying around a rock. It sets itself up about 6 meters away from Sigma and starts throwing rocks.
