Hmm. Important question. Stella puts her hand under her chin and thinks as hard as she could. Hmm-hmmm. She gives Science Lady a long look. Finally she takes her guess: "Death Ray!"
Then she looks expectantly to the others, eagerly waiting for them to both get into the elevator and take their guesses!

Stella herded the last of her friends into the elevator and slammed the down button. To adventure! And hopefully death rays.

"First off, we obviously aren't going to find anything halfway functional down there, because I obviously would have taken everything of worth that survived the fire," Melissa says, finishing spraying a potion on her burn wounds. "That aside, my counterpart was *clearly* specializing in biologicals. I expect we'll find remains of her attempt to create the perfect life-form."

As the lift drops down, lights start to click on as it drops. It moves very slow, and actually doesn't seem to have been used in quite some time. Melissa herself seems to wonder if this was really 'her' design. Getting further down, there's more of those what look like chemical burns. They are more clear as the lights are on, and in fact, head up toward the room they fought in. Interesting.
As the lift finally reaches the bottom, they are set in what looks like a large storage room. Very large pieces of equipment are scattered around. Mellissa has a thought. Of course this isn't the main elevator. It's a freight one to get equipment down. There's not a sneaky way around getting what look like large crates and vats and lab equipment of all sorts down here easily. Capsule tech only goes so far, and sensitive calibrated equipment probably can't be downsized easily like that. Also would probably cost a fortune to do it over and over and over again.
As they step out, what seemed to be emergency lights turn on fully, and a door at the end slides open.

Stella peers out, and sees what looks like a main lab room, which looks slightly thrashed though the lights and consoles do all come on when the door is opened. The consoles in question are numerous, and all seem connected, waiting for input. The words 'Hello Doctor' appear on screen, as if greeting Melissa. There's numerous other pieces of equipment around the room, mostly looking like the marks in the elevator. One clear thing is a large vat connected to equipment, broken and completely empty.

"And that would be where the specimen was contained before it broke out," Melissa says, pointing to the vat as she strides out of the elevator. "I'll have to upgrade my containment measures next time I try this. Still, whatever I made here clearly has immense destructive potential, so I'd call that a success." She claps her hands together. "Computer! Status report!"

Stella ponders the odds of someone keeping their death ray in a vat and that does sound unlikely. Darn it! With a small sigh she pokes the nearest console with her stick.

The console whirrs to life. Apparently that did it! At least Alt-Melissa had the same way of making computers that do things on loud proclaimations.
Data shows on the screen, and a generated voice crackles to life.
"General Status report requested. Processing. Processing. Processing power operating at 18% normal capacity. Processing.
Complete.
Upper lab Status: UNREADABLE/OFFLINE
Lower lab Status: ONLINE/LIMITED
Breakdown-
Power remaining: Long running standby on processes have saved some, but power is at 23%
Server status: Partially corrupted. May be recoverable, but not in full."
There's a few more extraneous stuff, but then it finally gets to something.
"Experiment Code Name: GM
GM escaped containment [DATA LOST] days ago, causing extensive damage to the lower lab and catastrophic damage to the upper lab. Subject was 25% complete."

"Only 25% and already capable of laying waste to my laboratory? Excellent! No wonder my alternate self abandoned this place in favor of trying to recapture it!" Melissa is almost vibrating with excitement. "The League challenge would have provided a perfect cover story, on top of helping her train a team capable of subduing the experiment. Brilliant. Not that I expected anything else from myself, of course."
"Computer! Give me a project overview and design specs for Experiment GM."

Hmm. That did not sound like a death ray. Darn it! Stella sighed as the bet looked lost.
But! There was still plenty of things to find it seems. Science Lady wanted to find out more at least. She had heard of this of course, she was smart and worldly gall, so she readied her pickaxe to help "Data Mine". No nuggets of server would be unpicked! She'd give "Computer" a chance to spill the beans first though ...

Gwen's eyes just went between the good doctor, and her computer. What in the world was going on in here, and Mel was just going to...roll with it? Gwen just shrugged, and carefully moved around the floor to look for anything out of place. She took care in making sure her wheels didn't catch anything nasty that was lying on the floor.

"I kinda feel like enormous destructive potential only counts as a success if you can control it." There goes Noire being all sensible about mad science. She peers at another screen (because she's not tall enough to read over Melissa's shoulder) and points at one of the readouts curiously.
"GM... hm. We know alt-you was experimenting with Max Energy, right? Maybe Experiment GM is something that can Gigantamax. Heck, maybe that Muk was... no, wait, that wouldn't make any sense, would it? Muk don't explode, usually, they just leave goop all over everything." She stretches her arms out, and her ears perk up thoughtfully. "I gotta admit, though, making a kaiju's even better than a giant robot, so full points for alt-Doc."

The console whirrs.
"Core Data for PROJECT GM corrupted. Unable to load.
Searching....
Multiple log entries by username [MASTER MACAVITY] tagged under PROJECT GM. View these entries?"
When Melissa gives the go ahead, the first of multiple log entries appears. A slightly younger Melissa stands in front of the screen, looking pretty much the same as this Melissa, but the hybrid ears are indeed there, proving that theory correct. She seems to not be standing in 'this' lab, so it must be the now destroyed upper lab.
_______________________________________________________________
Melissa stand in front of the screen, clipboard in hand.
"Alright, Doctor Macavity. Log one. I'm recording this for prosperity because I... have taken a charity case. The peons at some of the greatest hospitals in Kanto can't actually solve this one, so they finally turn to me."
She turns the camera, and a younger Noire is laying on an examination table, a few pieces of equipment hooked up to her. She doesn't seem to be conscious. A few assistants are running about, one leading what must be Noire's mom off to the side, assuring that Doctor Macavity has this. Melissa steps back into frame.
"This child, now henceforth known as 'Noire' because she's so unassuming I couldn't think of a better code name other than 'Subject' but I will not refer to them as such as it lacks emotion connotation and I need everyone to know that I am capable of that, even if certain 'experts' in the field think I'm 'dangerous'."
She grabs the camera, now pretty much on a rant.
"Ok if Doctor Strongfeld ever sees this, yes I did in fact operate on myself with tech. And no it's not 'insane' it is, in fact, useful that I can shoot lightning at will. Not to mention what the kids call 'pretty rad'."
An aide in the back seems to stop to want to say something but is ushered off by another, saying something akin to 'Do you really want to get docked pay again for correcting her?'. Melissa by this point seems to have calmed down.
"Anyway. 'Noire'. She was brought to Fuschia General, by the time of recording, fourty two days ago. Noire was addressed with what seemed to be multiple illnesses since birth. Treatable, enough she was just a weak human child. Now I could just... replace parts... No. When she's older. Then I'll ask. Her mother seemed opposed to the idea. Regardless, she seemed to fall further ill, resulting in an induced coma to save her life two days later. Experts were brought in, and narrowed it down to something in her blood. But nothing they could identify. Her life hangs in the balance."
She clears her throat, and then looks particularly smug.
"And now it's my turn to solve it. I'll cross every line to figure this out, I'll leave no stone unturned. And then they'll name the disease after me. Clearly I will have earned it. I will keep logs along the process. Macavity out."
_______________________________________________________________
The next log seems to pick up a couple days later.
"I'm close. I can feel it."
Melissa paces back and forth. It's much darker before, Noire still lying in a coma on the table, and now aides to be found.
"I've done every scan, every test. But that's what those 'doctors' did. I have to look for for the unlookable. I've narrowed it down. Something in this child's blood is not delivering oxygen like it should be. It's the cause of her weakness, and seems to gotten worse, which needed the induced coma to keep her alive."
She leans against the table, patting Noire on the head for a moment, before looking at the camera, realizing it's still on.
"It helps me think, nothing else-"
She stops and stands.
"We need to isolate a blood cell. I have the equipment to do this, and keep it alive while watching. COMPUTER KEEP THAT LOG RUNNING!"
"Yes doctor."
Melissa takes a syringe and takes a small bit of blood, and heads off. The log speeds up at this point, seeing Melissa scoot around, with many different pieces of equipment. Finally it stops, and she turns to the camera.
"I figured it out. Computer, start finding me everything on the lost Galar region that we know of. I recognize this. Macavity out."
_______________________________________________________________
The next log seems to be some time later, Melissa looks smug as all hell, and Noire seems to be awake. Aides are removing the equipment, and they walk off.
Melissa turns to the camera.
"It's done. Noire is now alive. I have no idea how... but this unremarkable child's blood cells were growing and shrinking at random, causing her blood to be practically unusable."
Noire turns.
"Hey! I'm right here."
Melissa looks back.
"And...?"
The younger Noire sighs.
"Thank you for saving my life Doctor Macavity."
"That's what I thought. Anyway, before I was rudely interrupted... Her blood cells were gigantimaxing. It's said that the lost country of Galar had special areas where pokemon became giant. And somehow, it was infecting her like a virus."
Noire perks up.
"Wait... I know what that is!"
Melissa turns, intrigued.
"Really? Not many people do. They even think that country never existed."
"Yeah nobody is sure, but Gigantimaxing is supposed to make pokemon giant, but it was locked to their country. It's cool that it ended up in me."
"It was killing you."
"Still, to think that it was all real. Oh well, if you saved some of it you could probably make a giant monster or something. Bye doc!"
Noire hops off the table with energy she never had, and runs off screen.
"I... yes. If I had saved some. Clearly."
She ponders for a moment, before turning.
"Stay in school! You'll never be as smart as me... but still!"
There is a long moment of pondering, and she takes a pink glowing vial out of her pocket, and stares at it.
"Is everyone gone, computer?"
"The only living being is you, doctor."
"Bring up my finances. I think it's time for an expansion. Downward. Macavity out."
_______________________________________________________________
What looks like years later, Melissa is now exactly like her current self. And it now looks like she's down here. She looks into the camera lens, a smirk on her face.
"I'VE DONE IT! THEY CALLED ME MAD BUT IVE DONE IT!"
She laughs, and then backs up.
"Forgive the dramatics, but I've always wanted to say that before I made something akin to this!"
She turns the camera, and then it hits everyone who was down in Mt Moon like a brick. That's the Muk they fought. For sure, it's gotta be it. With the strange pink glow and everything. It takes up most of the containment vat it's in.
"I have made a giant monster! And it was totally my idea!"
She cackles.
"Years ago, I extracted the essence of Gigantimaxing, what was long thought a folks tale, from a child born with a defect in her blood. It's taken so long, but I managed to be able to apply it en-masse to more than just a single cell. My first test subject is this Muk. Due to it's simple cell structure, it was a clear first target. So far this is going to be called 'Project GM'. Giant Muk, yes I know it's simple, but something about the simple letters gives a conveying of power. Of someone like me, who controls the world around them."
She stares at her creation for a long time.
"In the upcoming weeks, it will need proper care for growth. We may be able to even get it to grow at-will like the Galareans of old! But for now... I must step away from the lab for a short time. I've decided to enroll in the Kanto league. I felt... an urge to join. I presume I've had a dream where I'm both pokemon champion and the smartest person in the nation. I'm going with that. My mind does surprise me every day. *ahem* I will need to remember to set a timer for myself. The creature will need to be sedated with a fresh does every week until it's become more stable."
She puts a hand on the glass.
"I'm sure whatever race deep in the future viewing this and my many other logs on this subject will look upon my genius and realize they really missed out on having me around. *sigh* Macavity out... for now."
_______________________________________________________________
"End of logs."

The log is interspersed with commentary from the present-day Melissa, interjections such as "Strongfeld! Must that buffoon plague me in every universe?" and "Macavitosis? No, that doesn't sound right at all... Macavity Syndrome? I'll have to look up what they ended up calling it." and "GM... it does have a ring to it, I suppose."
"Well, that was illuminating. Though I'm disappointed we've already found the rogue specimen. I wonder... it was feeding off that giant Tyranitar fossil when we found it. Does it have unusual dietary requirements? Or perhaps it senses that it's incomplete, and is seeking exotic energy fields in hopes of continuing its growth. Promising. I'll have to see about tracking it down. A pity the server here is corrupted."

"Unassuming?" Noire sounds slightly offended, but, well... compared to Melissa, she is, in either dimension. Apart from apparently having Gigantamax in her blood. She's not entirely sure how that could have happened, but it clearly has to be right, or pretty close to right. Because whatever alt-Melissa saved from alt-Noire's blood, it clearly did result in giant monsters.
"... Y'know, it seems unfair that I had Gigantamax energy in my blood and I didn't get to turn into a giant monster. Anemia is a really lame thing to happen from something as awesome as that." Though speaking of giant monsters, her ears spark a little when alt-Melissa insists she came up with the idea all on her own. "Man, it's a good thing for alt-you I never wrote that down or I could've sued you for plagiarism. Or whatever happens to scientists for plagiarism, because she totally stole that idea from me."
Noire rubs her chin when Melissa expresses her disappointment that there isn't an entirely different giant monster on top of the Muk. "Maybe the Tyranitar had Gigantamax energy itself, somehow? If GM needs the energy to be stable, seems like it'd go looking for a source, and there's probably not a whole lot of those in Kanto. Even in this timeline. And that was a huge skeleton. Anyway, we never actually caught that Muk, did we? It made a run for it when we put up enough of a fight." She's absolutely just thinking out loud at this point, stream-of-consciousness-ing her way through her logic.
She digs in her bag for the fossil souvenir of that fight. "And the fossil even shrank when it went past the last time. Maybe it drained all the energy out... which means it'd be looking for more. So if we wanted to track it down we could go looking for more sources of Gigantamax energy." She grins brightly when she finally comes to this conclusion. Something they could actually do! If they had some way to detect the stuff, anyway.

Oh it was working. Stella reluctantly puts away her pick and instead finds a nice spot to sit. She listens to the computer's tale attentively, though she doesn't know what to do with the medical terms. Still, it seemed like a nice story. Was glad to see that the Noire pulled through at the end!
Like Noire though she was a bit curious about this whole Gigantamax thing. Could her friend become giant-sized? She'd seen people do it before - on tv of course - and they usually just put their thumb in their mouth and blew. She mimicked the gesture and asked Noire to try it, just in case?

Gwen is drawn over to the computer to hear the logs, and is quite...disturbed with what is on there. She keeps side glancing at Mel as they go down memory lane of her insanity. "Geez....That was uhhh....something?" She rubbed her face. "Alright...So what do we do now? How in the hell do we start looking for something like this GM stuff? Wait....Anything is possible now...Uhh...If it was being studied, then...Is there something here that can track down a source?"

Hmm. Stella ponders the question. Hmm-hmm. Well ... The GM Muk had found that tyranitar fossil somehow right? Perhaps they could use it as bait! Oh but maybe it was too drained. Now if they had some sort of fresh, delicious bait... Her eyes slowly fixed on Noire.

"Yeah, that's what I was thinking, Gwen. Doc, you isolated the stuff when you were studying the Staryu, too, right? Any way we could use that to make a Max Energy detector? Either to find GM or to find some bait for it, either way'd probably work."
She glances back at Stella... looking a little worried. "I don't think I like the way you're looking at me there."
