Rose took the hit and rolled with it, firing off a flurry of leaves that homed right into the water infused Bug. Donovan hardly had to speak to Rose to get it to happen but he looked at Sage with a devilish grin " I just needed to do the one. Rose isn't so good with his poison, so I had to think of a different way to get rid of the Fairy" Rose uses Magical Leaf on the water one and it can't miss and does Grass Special Damage so it should be down

"It's not about the results," Sage chides, "it's about the principal. You only cheat yourself. And, as you move up in the world, you'll find that people are more and more prepared for that sort of thing."Three of the bugs fall, a small ball of coloured energy shooting from them towards the giant bug. The rainbow sheen on the bug seems to be missing the bright pink, purple, and rich blue parts of the oil slick that it had moments prior. Bulldoze hits. Magical leaf hits. Rose takes 36 damage and 2 injuries from Fury Cutter.

" Honestly I'm getting really tired of gym leaders constantly telling me to bend to THEIR way of doing things. This is three in a row that talk down on the way I fight. I'm not cheating myself, I'm playing to win. In the real world, anything goes, and fights should reflect that" Donovan says before pointing " Rose, I know you don't have much more in you, but try and take down another!" Rose stepped back again and released a barrage of thorny vines at the Ground bug. Thankfully even with his injuries they seemed to be heading in the right direction. Rose Disengages and uses Mega Drain on the Ground Shedinja with a 12 vs AC 2 for 45 Grass Special damage

"Once more with Rock Slide Dusty! You can do it!" Mica encouraged, glancing curiously at Donovan as he let her have it. Ingenuity was a good thing, and he was kinda right. "You did ask if we were prepared for everything, and he was prepared!"

"These aren't always just lessons for battling," Sage says, not changing her demeanor in response to his outburst. "They're also lessons for life. In the real world, there are many times where going behind what's intended, even if it's technically allowed, will get you in trouble." She pauses for a moment, before giving a smile. "I'm not saying that I, personally, don't appreciate the effort, though. It may not be the lesson I'm trying to teach, but, it's still one to keep in mind, and will likely be valuable elsewhere. But, I do have to put personal feelings aside at times. Just... be glad that this is one of the earlier gyms that you're facing. Because if someone later on tried pulling that, well," she winks, "I'd have some tricks of my own to pull."The rocks from Dusty unfortunately miss the shells again, but another one collapses from Rose's leaves. The large one, though, gets some revenge, tearing into the weakened plant with calculated precision, causing the Roselia to faint. Shedinja faints from Mega Drain. Dusty misses. Rose takes 83 damage, 4 injuries, and Faints from Fury Cutter.

Donovan nearly cries out as Rose gets almost split in two. Sage wasn't holding back even a little. He decides to just....ignore her. He was done with gym leaders, done with what they had to say, and done with how unhelpful they were. If they lost, then they lost and they could just....move on and forget about it. They really had more pressing things to do then sit here and get beat up by someone who should probably be helping them you know....save people. Silently, he recalls Rose and throws out Dandelion. Continuing to stay quiet, he points to his head and then mentally commands Dandelion to attack the Grass type with Gust. Dandelion comes out and has Init 11
He uses Gust on the Grass type with an 8 vs AC 2

Dusty continues to stomp about, tongue lolling and having a good old time. So many bugs! Tasty bugs, everywhere! THIS WAS ANTLION PARADISE! His attacks kept going wide, such was his hunger and his joy. Mica couldn't help but start laughing hysterically until tears came to her eyes. He was such a good boy.

Dandelion is able to take down another bug, the bright green colour fading from the sheen around the large ghost. Unfortunately for Dusty, Antlion Paradise wasn't without its dangers, as the largest bug he'd ever seen comes out from behind where he'd been... and slashes with a chitinous appendage. As things go dark, he reflects that this bug doesn't really look that appetizing... Dandelion hits with Gust. Dusty takes 85 damage, 3 injuries, and Faints from Fury Cutter.

Dusty was pulled back in a red beam of light and Mica started to walk away from the battlefield, still giggling to herself. "Come on Donovan, let's go get Dusty a nice snack, it's pretty clear he's way too hungry for this, and this challenge is dumb." She wiped her eyes, fully jovial in her statement. "Type effectiveness is super basic, if I wanted my Pokemon to get bullied while I recited type tables I'd be going through my albums while we fight wilds."

"I see," Sage says, simply, "You wish to withdraw your challenge? Very well. I do understand. This Gym is often considered to be the last hurdle before the Elite Four, and it's not often that those early on their journey can overcome it. It requires resilience, a varied team, and many skills for each Pokémon. Do not feel bad for not overcoming it. Sometimes the basics form the hardest challenges." She softens a little. "Before you leave here, though, if you'd wish some food and a hot drink before you descend, I can provide that. We must just finish up here, first."
She looks to Donovan. "Are you going to continue on by yourself? Or are you, too, going to withdraw. There is no shame in the latter."

Donovan bites his lip in thought. He had no way to take on an electric type, setting everything else aside. He had no way to win this fight. But he couldn't just give up. He couldn't let Rose have taken such a beating just for him to quit.
"I don't think I can win. But I also won't give up. Rose gave everything he had for me in this fight. I can't not give it everything I have. I just have to take it step by step...."
He clutches Dandelions ball in his hand as tight as he can. He wants to recall him but can't bring himself to do it. "Giving up when things get tough isn't right. It's not the way to do things. Even if its impossible I have to try"

"Well, that's admirable in its own right," Sage says. "Very well. We shall continue."The battle doesn't last much longer. Donovan's able to take out several more of the bugs, but, in the end, he's just not able to do enough. "You have tenacity, I see," the Leader says, nodding, as the remaining Shedinja return to storage. "I'm sure that will serve you well. I do hope to see you back here one day, to overcome this challenge. There are many who have given up here. Hopefully you don't take this as the end of the road." As she climbs the stairs back towards the entrance. "I will make the same offer to you as I did your companion. Care for a hot drink and some snacks before descending?"Take 5 TXP each, and level all of your 'mon up to level 25 for the experience.

"May as well... I was gonna ask Donovan if he wanted to go looking for abdominal snowmen but he got his team all beat up so that probably wouldn't work out today. Too much stuff to do in the next couple of days to be worrying about any of this. Maybe we'll be back though, when Dusty is well fed."

Donovan felt more at ease having given it his all than if he had quit partway through. He may have lost, but he would come back one day and win. He knew that for sure.
"Maybe I'll save this for last too then. I can swing back by and show you how much stronger I've gotten." He seemed more at peace than he had during the fight. This loss taught him more than a win would have, just like his first gym battle had. "Mark my words though. I will be back, and I will win. And hopefully by that time I have less on my mind and I can give you a bit more of a challenge." He fell silent for a moment and then held out his hand "But thank you. It's good to be reminded that I still have a lot to learn and there are other ways of doing things. Just don't be surprised when I pull something during our rematch."
He nodded "But yeah, I'd like something to drink before heading back down"

Sage provides the trainers with their choice of tea, cocoa or coffee, and biscuits, letting them fill up before heading back down the mountain. Thankfully, it's still early enough in the day that it's not in the cooling-off portion, but with the side of the mountain that the town is on, it won't be too long before it starts getting darker.
Indeed, by the time they arrive at the Pokémon center, it's starting to cool off, and the sun's starting to touch the top of the mountain ridge. The Center is able to get most of their Pokémon healed, though Rose will still need significantly more time, up into the evening.
In the meantime, the two are able to retrieve the stone sent by the Lab for Mica. It looks like a Dusk Stone, but there's an inner light within that's not normally seen within. It's intriguing... well, at least Dusty certainly thinks so. The Trapinch wanders up to the thing, puts an eye up to it... and then promptly closes her mouth over it. Before anyone can act, crunching sounds can be heard, before the antlion cocks her head. She doesn't seem to have enjoyed the snack very much, given she immediately looks up at Mica with her 'I want more food' eyes.

"Duuusty, that wasn't yours!" Mica chided the antlion softly. "Now you're probably going to get a tummy ache... I said I was going to feed you, but I didn't mean the special rock from the lab." The girl slouched, a defeated smile on her face as her Pokemon just turned sideways to watch her with head cocked. "Let's get you fed."
A rather large meal for Mica and her very bug-like companion later, and the teen settles in with her sketchbook for the evening, Dusty's big head contentedly in her lap atop the small beds the center provided.

The Trapinch mrrrrs happily, quite full at last. No more of that tasteless tingly not-candy rock junk. After a few minutes, though, the contented noise stops, and Mica notices that the Trapinch feels... lighter. There's a bright light coming from the antlion, which floats up a bit from the ground. Oddly, there are a few tiny solid-looking chunks swirling around in the energy, that quickly dissolve. The energy flickers, like normal for evolution, before finally resolving into... a creature that looks nothing like Trapinch. It has a fuzzy pink body with four spindly little legs coming off, and pastel-blue shimmering diamond wings. Bright aqua sparkling eyes peer down at Mica as the creature tries out its new wings... and promptly bumps its head into the ceiling. A little taken aback, it seems to take several minutes to figure out how to actually go down, before landing in front of Mica, and attempting to figure out some way to curl back up in her lap without all the many wings getting in the way.

"Dusty...! You're growing up! I'm so proud of you! This must have been why you were so hungry!" Mica hugs around the creature's neck, cheerful, happy nearly to the point of tears. She had been with her antlion for a very long time now. Setting her sketchpad aside for the night, she laid out on her back and let Dusty sprawl atop her, gently working her fingers through that fur. "Sorry I grumped at you, you don't even normally eat rocks. I'll try to make sure you are better fed, too." Burying her face against the Pokemon's fluffy body, Mica embraced what was left of the day in high spirits.

The night passes, with the wind of the mountains whipping through the air, echoing into the Pokémon Center. Thankfully, by the morning, it seems to have quieted down and become quite calm. The morning training is quite cold, but after some activity and more sun, it's bearable out.
Trekking out towards where Lana had indicated, it's about a half hour until they finally stumble upon what can only be the "excavation site". It's not really an excavation, though there is clearly a pile of rock and boulders that has been removed from the cliff face. A small portable station has been set up near the mountainside, presumably so that whoever's out here doesn't freeze to death. There are some signs (mostly blown over) saying for there to be no access, but there's someone in the window of the station looking out that waves, and comes out to meet them.
"You must be Mica and Donovan," the blond bundled-up woman says, as she gets within speaking range. Her face is clearly one of inquisitiveness, as her eyes constantly dart about, trying to take in everything. "I'm Doctor Jayna Morrison, but you can just call me Jayna. We're all friends here, and I don't stand much on formality." She laughs. "Anyways, Lana said that you'd be interested to see what lies within? I think you'll be impressed. I've really not seen it all myself, given that we finally fully cleared the entrance only a few days ago. Though," she looks at the two, "I do have to ask, what's your interest in this sort of stuff? Sociological? Geographical? Ecological?"

"Sociological" Donovan says with a smile as he nods at Jayna "I know I look young, but I'm studying the civilization that built these structures and then disappeared. Any chance I can get to learn more about them is something I can't turn down."
He angled his head to look towards the pile of rubble "So how far in have you managed to get? And uh...Where exactly is in?"
