“Hello, Hoenn! It is with great pride that I announce that great steps have been made in scientific progress. Previously, Mega Stones have only been available to the rich and notable, due to their immense rarity. Hopefully that can now change, unlocking a whole new realm of progress for both battling and everyday life. Together with researchers at Devon, we have created synthetic Mega Stones. However, we simply don’t have the personnel or time to conduct a thorough test. And that is where you come in. We’re looking for three dozen people, around sixteen to nineteen, who are willing to bring a single Pokémon to take on a journey to challenge the Hoenn Pokémon League. All we require is a great enthusiasm, and a willingness to work with others! So, come and join me in taking a great leap in science!” – Professor Birch
Welcome to the wonderful world of Poké- yeah, you’ve probably heard that spiel more than enough times by now. It’s a herald of adventure, and this time is no different. Once more, I’ve found myself wanting to run another game, and this time I’m going back to my roots, with a Gym Crawl in Hoenn. Granted, as anyone who knows my Gym Crawls can tell by now, that’s not the only thing going on. There are other things brewing in the background, that will come up during play. Gyms certainly aren’t the only draw here. As you can tell, too, Mega Evolution will factor into this. Given your characters' participation in this project, you’ll even be guaranteed access to it. If this sounds at all interesting, well, then just keep reading.
I’m going to be looking for three players for this game. I’ll be expecting a post at least once every other day, in order to keep a decent pace going. I’m fairly lenient if informed ahead of time that something’s about to come up, or if an emergency arises… but this is one thing that my patience has begun to have worn thin on through the years.
What We’re Using
Now, I should get out of the way at the beginning that this game is in part a little test. It will be using the “1.05.5” update for the PokéDex, Indices and Reference, and Errata compilation that can all be found HERE. Please make sure to pick those up, because that’s what we’ll be using.
In addition, the Trainer Level Revision found there will also be used (so please make sure to read that). I want to see how well that works out. So please use the Fancy Sheet version Naganadel.
While all Errata is in play, barring the d20 capture rules (variant DB will also not be used), Game of Throhs, Do Porygon Dream of Mareep, and Blessed and the Damned will not be used.
In addition, the maximum party size for PCs at any one time is three.
Classes that will not be used: Supernatural classes (except Ninja), Chronicler, Artificer, Occultism.
Features that will not be used: PokeManiac, Psionic Sight.
Edges that won't be used: Basic Psionics
Altered Edges: Pokepsychologist chooses only two of the four skills to replace.
Altered Pokedge: Mixed Power requires the Pokémon's final Attack and Special Attack to be within 5 points of each other (before CS).
What with that out of the way...
Character Creation
Characters will begin at Level 1, with a level 15 Pokémon. It must be a multi-stage Underdog. Beyond that, the only prohibitions are: No legendaries, pseudo-legendaries, Honedge or Wynaut. Nincada is permitted, but I will flat out state ahead of time that you will not be getting Shedinja at any point.
This Pokémon is allowed to begin with one Egg Move known (so long as it meets Tutor restrictions, otherwise it goes on the Inheritance list), and one Tutor move on the Inheritance list. Variable damage moves count as the highest possible DB for these purposes (and any other Tutor restrictions).
Characters should be around 16 to 19 years of age.
You start with 5 Basic Balls, 3 Potions, 2 Enriched Water, and ₽1500. This money may be spent prior to the game, but not on TMs. You will obtain at the start a PokeDex, a Key Stone (of your choice what sort of Mega Item it is), and a Mega Stone of the type appropriate to your Starter.
Mega Evolution
The version of Mega Evolution that is being used in this game is an entirely new set of base stats, rather than the version where the bonus stats are simply added to the current Pokémon.
Mega Evolution may only be used once per day by each Trainer.
Canon Megas may not necessarily be used for other Trainers (I’ve not decided yet, but odds are good on custom ones). PCs, given their Synthetic Mega Stones, will have entirely custom Megas, even if there is a canon Mega Evolution already. I’ll be working with the accepted players as the time nears unlocking it to stat each of their Megas.
Do note that there will be a story point where it is unlocked, after all starters have reached their final evolutions. So, don’t, say, go picking Beedrill just because you think you’ll immediately have access to Mega Evolution. You won’t.
Questionnaire
As per usual, please answer these questions and include in your post. They’re to help you think, as well as to help me make sure that you’ve read all of this post. (Also, when submitting characters, please do it in a new post, rather than editing an older one. I’m more liable to miss it in that case.)
1) Who is the most important person in your character’s life?
2) Where’s your character’s favorite place to spend time?
3) What kind of weather does your character like best?
4) Why does your character want to apply for this opportunity?
5) If your character had the chance to do any one thing, knowing that they could not fail at it, what would it be?
Other Things
So, in the spirit of experiments, I’m going to be running a Discord chat this time, instead of Skype. You can find it HERE. I’ll make sure to try and keep the “faq” chat updated with questions people ask (and answers to them), so if you’ve got any, peek there first. Participation in this is mandatory, since I want to try and get to know people.
Also, just so I know that people know what they’re getting into, in your application post, along with your character and questionnaire, please put “I acknowledge that, should I get into this game, there is the expectation for me to post at least once every two days.”
The deadline for applications will be Thursday, Aug 30, at 8pm Pacific Time. If something comes up, it might end up extended, but I won’t shorten it.
I think that’s everything. Or, rather, that’s everything that I can think of. I’m sure there are things that I’m missing.
Edit: Okay, I realize one thing I forgot to mention, and that's a little bit of timeline-context. So, I put this in the Discord, but will also reproduce here:
It occurred to me that giving a little bit of setting context might be helpful to people when they're working on their characters. (Especially in part as to what's known in-universe and not. Also, which Hoenn timeline.) It's roughly twenty-five years after the "Delta Incident", (So, ORAS-timeline), though with the fact that it follows the Emerald model of both Groudon and Kyogre awakening. The general details of their awakening, Magma and Aqua's involvement, and the brief but severe weather changes throughout are fairly well documented. The Delta Episode events, however, aren't so well known. The Delta Meteor was apparently dealt with, though no official statement ever clarified exactly what happened beyond "the region is now safe".
