Wally releases Bronzor as close to the Nincada as he can without Shifting. He scans the Nincada. He Shifts as close to the Sandshrew as he needs to in order to throw a Poké Ball. He Shifts no closer than that. He makes a capture attempt on the Sandhsrew.
OOC: Took more classes.

[OOC: Because Sandshrew isn't among the Pokémon initiative, can I assume that means the capture was a success?]

[OOC: Yeah; sorry I missed that. I've been sick, so abstaining from coffee, so mentally sluggish. Anyway, it's Bronzor's turn.]

Wally: Another successful encounter. I have three Poké Balls left if you're still up for more.

Crystal: Thanks for the invitation, but I need to heal my Pokemon, and then I'm going to turn in for the night.
Sam: Same for me. That croc gave my team quite a thrashing!
[OOC: I'll add the new Pokemon to Wally's sheet soon.]

Wally: Let's head back, then.
Wally picks up the four broken Poké Balls on his way back.
[OOC: How does trading work in PTA? I read in the book that you can actually lose Pokédex entries from trading. Like, if you trade away a Pokémon, you have to uncheck its box in the 'dex. Is this true?]

[OOP: Apparently so. I hadn't realized that for sure, but the rule makes sense, with the rationale they gave.
I think I might try to contact that other guy again, to see if his schedule has opened up more to let him join in for the gym battle.]

[OOC: Well, first, players should never have their own separate Pokédexes. For the life of me I do not understand why all systems handle it that way. It's a recipe for an unbalanced party and dissatisfaction among the players. Dex XP should be shared. They should not have built an actual rule into their game that screws you over for trading Pokémon with the NPCs of the world just because there was a chance that some players would try to abuse it. This just in - players will always try to abuse everything. Accept it and build your system. The GMs are the ones who will stop those shenanigans, you know? Does it make any actual sense - outside of the context of preventing munchkin stuff - that a digital encyclopedia in which entries are unlocked would have them re-lock again? They messed up when they wrote that aspect of PTA.]

[OOC: Yeah; I see your point. Possibly, the people who wrote those rules were thinking in terms of friendly competition, as well as how to make the Capture Specialist uniquely good in certain scenarios. However, another possibility is that since capturing Pokemon is a challenge, they wanted to reward people for passing that challenge, later remembering that there were easier ways to get Pokemon, and sticking in rules to prevent breaking the system with that, instead. I do feel that there should be a special reward for capturing Pokemon yourself, but yeah, what they did was not ideal. It "works" in terms of gameplay, but it's so absurd in terms of narrative that something else ought to replace it. I'm open to your suggestions of what, and I think I want to ask around on the main PTA boards, too.
Something else, while we're on the discussion of catching Pokemon: It's not a very balanced challenge at the moment. Unlike other elements of this system, it's determined by D100 roles. There are modifiers, but at least in early games, they aren't nearly big enough to offset the random nature that so many possible rolls produce. I can tell you from my experiences running these encounters, that so far as I recall, no attempting capture has ever been "close"; in that the only difference between capturing it and not capturing it has been a modifier or lack thereof. Either a roll has been far higher than the minimum it needed to be to fail, or it has been far lower than the maximum it needed to be to succeed. This needs to be rebalanced.]

[OOC: PTU's Playtest updates changed it from a d100 to a d20 and I thinks it's a way better approach, though most people still purposefully choose not to utilize it and state in their recruitment ads that their game will still use the old d100 way of handling it. I don't know why so many people do that. Maybe they're just unwilling to change from something they already know to something new that they'd have to learn, or maybe they genuinely feel that the update is not better than the original. Or maybe a combination of both. I like the new way. Using a d20 does create scenarios where it is, as you said, 'close'. The modifier is sometimes the only things that made the capture attempt successful.]
Wally heads back into town to use the PokéCenter and get everyone healed up.
